Greetings Everyone,

Watching the apprentice and seeing how many times team players were getting caught up in debates with the project manager, reminded me of similar issues in the work place.

I mean why is it that there is the constant stressing of who is supposed to be doing what or how they should be acting rather than just getting on with the job at hand??

Does it ever serve any real purpose?

What's your take on this??

It serves pride and status and nothing else. Well not exactly nothing else, on the show they're actually competing. So they're all trying to show their supposed leadership skills, which as you can see, they take to mean how well they can shout down somebody else and get their own way. Their bullying skills in other words. That the actual tasks are usually about how well they can get the group working (not show off) is beyond them.

Also you have to remember that the others in the group are trying to compete with them, as the PL in each scenario is only a temporary figure and not a secure post as in reality. So they'll slyly try to undermine the efforts of the PL without being to obvious while trying to get across how much better at it they would be.

This isn't to far from real life. People won't simply do the task at hand as you say because they're not thinking of the task at hand, they're thinking of progression of their own careers and lives and that has to mean pushing for promotions (not waiting for them). That means showing how much better you would be in a leading role and so on. Of course most people are NOT good at such roles, going back to what I said about bullying/leadership and generally end up ruining a team and the task instead of impressing. Politics lol

It's true what you say about the bullying and interesting point about the difference between the workers and the career progressors. It's a very nasty approach to get ahead though. Like the person really doesn't have enough clout in their own right without having to bring someone else down. That red head woman in apprentice was the best at that I think and Clare was quite bad on that photoshoot task.

It wouldn't wash with me especially if this person was coming to tell me about what someone else wasn't doing. The first thing I'd be questioning is "why are you telling me this and more to the point what are YOU doing with the job I've given you to do? You seem to have a bit too much time on your hands *looks for the shredding pile* Let's scrutinize that shall we???"

Playing devils advocate now but given that you had a boss that would entertain it, would any of you try this method if it would help you progress?
