Default Packing up the 9-5. - 07-07-08, 09:02 PM

Anyone packed up their careers to do something completely different? I'm having trouble seeing my career as meaningful if it isn't for raising my children so think I'll finish out this year then call it a day to focus on charity - maybe revive the career at a less demanding level or become a full time dad if me and wifey have children of our own.

Anyone done something similar where the reality meant you had to run back to the work? Was speaking to a friend who went over to the Caribbean for a different way of life and had to run back to England to her old job fast.

I've given up the commuting, but am lucky enough to be able to continue my career freelance and work from home.

Hubby and I have seriously considered going back to the Caribbean (he says JA, I'd prefer Grenada), but I've pointed out that it's not the same as here - if any of us is sick we couldn't just run to the doctor. Plus I know for a fact that Caribbeans tend to employ Caribbeans - we're from foreign!

That said, I'm definately retiring to Grenada!

I work from home as an artist, I paint and draw for a living. Before that I was a sales manager at a large publishing house. It wasnt so much that I hated the work, but I didnt enjoy it and I worked hellish hours. To be honest I wish Id packed it in years before. Now Im able to be home with the kids as well as earning the money needed to live, and Im happier than Ive ever been. I have had a few hairy moments financially, especially to begin with, but on the whole I dont do too badly, and the quality of life I have gained is priceless.

@ Astmartins,

The next time I go I will be attempting to get dual nationality. My Mum has to apply for herself as she's Guyanese, and I think both parents need to be Grenadian citizens for us children to get it.

I spent years working mainly in the mail order sector for other companies. I'd been made redundant twice and I left my last job after having been unsuccessful in an interview for a job promotion and then seeing my ideas implemented by the person they gave the job to!

I resigned and then set up my own internet business working from home and selling cosmetics aimed at the black market. It's taken a while to get going and it's been hard work but now I know that my hard work isn't helping someone else do well and it has its own rewards.

It takes guts to walk away but for me, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Retire to Africa and you'll be treated like a king (as long as you have a degree/qualification and good working experience!!)

I have always wondered why most black people in Uk never think of going out even to USA!! they take the siddon-look-complain approach

And you don't have to be African to live and work there, there are always cities that are coming up with comparable standard with western society in terms of infrastructure

I know many people that moved to Nigeria they find it challenging at first but they found their feet and got used to it! PS there are daily flights to UK
