Luke 23:31
Humanity of Jesus

Question 155. Next, Luke 23:40. This is a proverbial expression referring to His sufferings compared with that of the nation in 70 A.D. Jesus was the "green tree," fair and fruitful; the Jews or the nation was the "dry tree," dead and unfruitful. If the Romans thus consent to deliver up and crucify the innocent who has never given them cause of offense, what will they do to the nation who will provoke them? The term "green tree" is one of many references to the humanity of Jesus:

1. Human names (Matthew 1:1,21; Matthew 2:2; Matthew 8:20; Matthew 9:19; John 1:29,41; John 4:25; John 20:16; Romans 1:3; 1 Cor. 15:45; Rev. 5:5; Rev. 22:16)

2. Human mother (Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:6-7; Isaiah 11:1; Matthew 1:18-23; Galatians 4:4)

3. Human babyhood (Luke 2:16), childhood (Luke 2:40,52), and manhood (1 Tim. 2:5)

4. Human flesh-and-blood body (John 1:14; Hebrews 2:14-18; 1 John 4:1-6)

5. Human in all things like men (Hebrews 2:9-18; Hebrews 4:14-16)

6. Human in life on earth (Luke 2:40,52; John 5:30-46; John 6:57; John 7:16; John 8:27-29; Phil. 2:5-11; Hebrews 2:9-18; Hebrews 4:14-16; Hebrews 5:7-9)

7. Human in limitations and passions: grew in body and spirit (Luke 2:40,52), wept (John 11:35), hungered (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 11:12), thirsted (John 4:7; John 19:28), slept (Matthew 8:24), grew weary (John 4:6), sorrowed (Isaiah 53:3-4), suffered physical pain (Luke 22:44; 1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 4:1); craved sympathy (Matthew 26:36-40; Luke 22:15-27), was tempted (Matthew 4; Hebrews 4:14-16), died physically (John 19:30; Acts 1:3; Acts 2:23; 1 Peter 2:24), and was resurrected physically to live in a glorified human body forever (Luke 24:49; John 20:27; 1 Cor. 5; Zech. 13:6)

Excellent bro, Nothing but the "Truth".

Jesus of Nazareth, without money and arms, conquered more millions than Alexander the Great, Caesar, Mohammed, and Napoleon; without science and learning, he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined; without the eloquence of school, he spoke such words of life as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet; without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, and songs of praise than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.

As the centuries pass, the evidence is accumulating that, measured by His effect on history, Jesus is the most influential life ever lived on this planet. Fundamentally, our Lord's message was Himself. He did not come merely to preach a Gospel; He himself is that Gospel. He did not come merely to give bread; He said, "I am the bread." He did not come merely to shed light; He said, "I am the light." He did not come merely to show the door; He said, "I am the door." He did not come merely to name a shepherd; He said, "I am the shepherd." He did not come merely to point the way; He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."

To holy people the very name of Jesus is a name to feed upon, a name to transport. His name can raise the dead and transfigure and beautify the living
Christianity is not a doctrine, not truth as truth, but the knowledge of a Person; it is knowing the Lord Jesus. You cannot be educated into being a Christian

Even those who have renounced Christianity and attack it, in their inmost being still follow the Christian ideal, for hitherto neither their subtlety nor the ardour of their hearts has been able to create a higher ideal of man and of virtue than the ideal given by Christ of old.

Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50, Aristotle for 40, and Jesus for only 3. Yet the influence of Christ's 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity.

Buddha never claimed to be God. Moses never claimed to be Jehovah. Mohammed never claimed to be Allah. Yet Jesus Christ claimed to be the true and living God. Buddha simply said, "I am a teacher in search of the truth." Jesus said, "I am the Truth." Confucius said, "I never claimed to be holy." Jesus said, "Who convicts me of sin?" Mohammed said, "Unless God throws his cloak of mercy over me, I have no hope." Jesus said, "Unless you believe in me, you will die in your sins."

In Jesus, God wills to be true God not only in the height but also in the depth – in the depth of human creatureliness, sinfulness and mortality.

If I might comprehend Jesus Christ, I could not believe on Him. He would be no greater than myself. Such is my consciousness of sin and inability that I must have a superhuman Saviour.

Our problem is this: we usually discover him within some denominational or Christian ghetto. We meet him in a province and, having caught some little view, we paint him in smaller strokes. The Lion of Judah is reduced to something kittenish because our understanding cannot, at first, write larger definitions
