hi sbk i know a lot of people that have joined the holy tabernacle and most of them have had bad experiences with them.

the leader of the group has been constantly changing the religion and this has made a lot of his followers confused. at the moment the leader is in prison i'm not sure exacatly for, but it was something to do with abuse of children.

Nuwabian leader sued for $1 billion over sex abuse charges
Athens Banner-Herald/July 2, 2002
By Stephen Gurr
A Florida man has filed a lawsuit against jailed religious sect leader Dwight York in Athens federal court, accusing the one-time Athens resident of molesting the plaintiff's daughter when she was 11 years old.
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court June 24, seeks punitive damages of $1 billion. The name of the plaintiff in the suit is being withheld by this newspaper because of his relation to the alleged victim, a minor.
The suit claims that the victim and her mother, a member of York's quasi-religious United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, moved into York's Putnam County compound in 1993. At the age of 11, the suit alleges, the girl was told by a member of York's ''inner circle'' that something ''wonderful'' was going to happen to her, and that it would have ''deep significance for her spiritual development.''
York then showed the girl a ****ographic movie and shortly afterward had sex with her, the suit alleges.
''He had (the girl) observe defendant York sexually abuse other children in a like manner, all for the purpose of gratifying his wicked, depraved, and corrupt sexual appetite,'' the suit claims.
''This pattern of activity began at the compound in Putnam County and continued in Athens-Clarke County after York began to reside in Athens-Clarke County in 1998,'' the suit claims.
The victim named in the complaint is also listed as a victim in a 116-count criminal indictment against York on charges of child molestation and other related crimes.
The indictment was returned by a Putnam County grand jury three months ago and York remains in federal custody on charges of transporting minors across state lines for the purpose of sex.
York's attorney, Ed Garland, was unavailable for comment Monday. Garland has previously said his client was ''completely, totally and absolutely innocent of these charges.''
Athens attorney John Barrow, representing the plaintiff, declined to comment on the suit.
Athens-Clarke Police looked into the possibility that York may have molested children in his sprawling Mansfield Court mansion, which he purchased in 1999 for $557,000. But as of this week, police said, interviews with potential victims have turned up no indications of criminal activities at the mansion.
Putnam County investigators and officials with the state Division of Family and Children Services interviewed a cult member's daughter who lives in Athens, but ''no criminal charges have been filed to date as a result of that interview,'' Athens-Clarke County Assistant Police Chief Mark Wallace said Monday.
The lawsuit says the molestations of the girl named in the complaint continued for six years, until she called her father in 1999 and told him she wanted to go home. In March 2002, she confided in family members about the abuses and the father contacted authorities, the suit claims.

Hi I am new to this forum and l just thought l would start my first post by asking what other forum members thought about new age religions which target the black community. What do people think about new age religions such as the holy tabernacle and other such groups? Has anyone joined these groups? What was your experience was it positive or negative? Why did you join and what have you learnt or benefited from becoming a member? I look forward to hearing what people think and have experienced.

"Most so-called "New Age" religions are nothing but refried or repackaged traditional religions mixed with a little mysticism.

Never have I found a New Age religion that will say that Jesus never existed or that he was merely a man like any other.
They always revere Jesus and hold him up as one of the world's greatest spiritual leaders."

Take another look At Wicca.

"One thing about most New Age religions is that they seem to be very excepting of all races and genders and atleast early on, seem to treat everyone equal.

Maybe this because as they're just starting out, they need as many followers as they can."

Maybe its cause they know that races are all equal and its the soul that matters.

"Another obvious reason New Age religions have attract so many blacks is because they focus more on "spirituality" than actual set commandments and disciplines.

Most black folks tend to belive themselves more spiritual than religious."

Most white folks too dont they? Actually there are more black catholics than whites.. the next pope is gonna be black..

"Most New Age movements don't REQUIRE you to behave morally upright nor do they actually discipline you if you don't.
Most don't have set COMMANDMENT and RULES for the members to follow. "

Where are you getting that from? Give me an example of a "new Age Religion" that does that.

"Although it's not true for most Africans...most black folks from the Americas are traditionally an undiciplined people who really don't wanna be told what to do.
We wanna do things our way (right or wrong) and don't wanna hear criticizm or condemnation for our mistakes."

I think thats a generalization #1, #2 I think that all religion makes you commit something or another.. the most CONDEMNING religion is not neccesarily the most right.. I mean if you think about it, why wouldn't Gods work be closer to what our natural inclination is anyhow?

"So you have some white clown in shades and a purple suit comes rolling through the hood telling all the women that it's ok to have babies out of wedlock or that women don't have a specified role in the family or society."

What are you reffering to?

"Another strange looking white man tells the bruthaz that they don't need to stand up and become politically active or militant but just fold their legs and meditate all day and let "the spirit" take care of everything. "

Actually its mostly YELLOW men and BROWN men (and women) saying that. Yoga originated in India and flourished throughout Asia far more than it has hit in the New Age movement. And having "the spirit" present might make one a bit more politically active in a balanced way. Look at Ghandi for an example. I don't think anyone advocates people becomming placated through meditation and blind to the needs of their communities.

"That's what they wanted to hear all along because it gives them an excuse not to do anything material or be the men they should be."

I've never seen a new age movement suggesting that we lie down and take whats coming to us. The new age movements have been especially politically active in the issues of the Environment, something that affects everyone regardless of race.

"New Age dogma is very appealing to people who have given up on this world and have decided that nothing will work for them."

What 'dogma' are you reffering to? The sh*t on Opera? Thats not really true new age. Please give me an example.

"But what one must understand...especially black people....is that the traditional scriptures like the Bible and Koran and other Holy books are extremely valuable."

Sure.. and why aren't the other holy books valuable? Why aren't all holy book valuable? And also poetry, and Art, and other things which allow us to contemplate the beauty of God manifest in the world?

"They are more valuable that any religious dogma that these so-called New Age religions might offer."

You need to state what dogma you are reffering to here.

"Although many traditional scriptures have been tampered with, they still lay out a structural foundation for governing. They lay out definate rights and wrongs and teach ancient social wisdom."

Like kill homosexuals? Like kill non-Christians, non-Muslims, and non-Jews? Each book degrades WOMEN and places them at the bottom of the pile. At one point in time women were treasured highly as special. Our black history might recall Egypt, and their pagan traditions, women held status there that the Patriarchs of the 'book' never wanted to respect. Women could own property and have domain over a situation. This never happened with the domination of the people of the 'books' for many many centuries after.

"I haven't read any New Age books yet that could compare to the wisdom that I've found in Ecclasticlees or Psalms or Proverbs. I still apply the principles I've read in those books to my everyday life."

Glad you can apply them! Thats what matters.

No New Age religion teaches man how to grow food, clean food, kill animals, build structures, organize families, deal with mentral cycles, raise and breast-feed children, ect..ect.. like the Holy Koran, ancient Hebrew scriptures, and the Old Testament books of the Bible.

DEAL WITH menstral cycles? Like we are cows when we bleed? Our blood is natural and healthy and our womanhood should be respected. Did you know that Judaism has a section of their talmud dealing with 'women' and the other catagories are 'planting' and 'bathing' etc.? Islamic-dominated countries are AGES behind the West even with their treatment of women. Now in our modern society we do not need to know how to grow food in a biblical sense. We know how to do many of the things which it addresses. We do not need 617 commandments like the Jews regulating our every mood. What we do need is to know HOW to get in touch with the Divine in our lives. Im glad you mentioned how the book interacts with your life, cause for many Christians, and Jews, and Muslims also are going through the motions and not really being affected through the older patriarchial religions. This is why New Age has an appeal. Its why its the fastest growing religion in the world.

Thanks for the debate.

Justagrl

Islamic-dominated countries are AGES behind the West even with their treatment of women.

That statement is very interesting you know. Their treatment of women. Oh so the West treat their women better do they ???

All i see is that the men in those countries as in times of old take authority over their women and their children.

While the West are bringing up women out of control not knowing in some case their place in society. When I hear a woman say she is equal to a man, it makes me laugh on my insides. And one thing a woman will not do to me, is what black people can quickly and easily do to white people. Make them feel awkward. Some white people are scared to say the word black in front of some people, imagine that scared to call you by the colour which you are, but their own treachery as brought that on them.

When I hear men argue that a black man is equal to a white man, I sometimes ask myself who is trying to convince who ?

They write policies of equal opportunities, why, not because we are unequal because of colour, but they are unequal in their mentalities toward people of colour, so they have to draw up papers which they then fiddle still because their mentalities are unchanged. So equalness is a funny thing to me.

To me a woman should not strive to be equal to man, but strive to be everything that God as made her to be.

In the west we see that feminism have turned women into men, no wonder theres so much gay's in its society, because its women act like men, they fight like men for the food, they drive bus and lorry, they in the army and worst most of them can't bear children.

So you tell me, what exactly do the West have over other peoples of the world ?

Interesting JustaGrl,

That you should jump to the conclusion straight away that I have an hatred for women based upon what I have just written. What can you tell me please regarding the bibles stance on women ? Please tell and then I will show you where the West as brain washed you on the Western Journey ?.

And remember your talking to a man who acknowledges that he came from a woman. Like I said I don'tbow at every woman that cries feminist pig. I am not that, but I see men not knowing there place in this world and especially this society. Everything back to front and this is done for a reason.

Well Im not a christian so Im definitly not going to any church but some of the new church organizations that i saw were ok because I seen a few buy and renovate properties for low income housing and small businesses and scholarships for the members children. I even seen a church called the Rising star baptist church that opened up an IHOP anda large free day care center and I think stuff like this is cool. Even though I will not be there but I like the business and charity stuff.
