In my church the question about going to the movies causes so much flack than anything. Most of the elders, whom I respect,
dont think that you are supposed to be in a movie theatre. They were raised, mostly in the south, to not be involved with the world, such as movies because of various reasons including partaking with worldly people. I understand the scripture of being in the world but not of the world, but if its a no no to be in movies, what about things that we do everyday as in eating out, going to a sports event, or any event. The very people in my church that are against movie theatres are okay with sporting events such as basketball and football games. They also are against having kids go to the high school proms. I understand the concept of being separated but...gee whiz???!! Where do you draw the line? I have to work with worldly people, I have to shop at a worldly super market, I have to drive a car made by worldly people. Your comments?

I hear you!!
I feel Christians can go to the cinemas.
Since the Passion of Christ has come out most of the elder brethren have revised their way of thinking.
But we have to be careful ofwhat we let enter into our minds. The mediaportrays so muchevil that we are becoming more comfortable with it. We are becoming de- sensitized for example
Saying God's Name in Vain.
We hear it all the time we forget that its a sin.
See no
Hear no
Speak no

khalil are you muslim?
if you were you would know the reason why some christians AND muslims say this.
basically anything that leads you away from remembering Allah is sinful. watching movies that are full of violence and sex is sinful. whilst watching films that promote the good qualities that Allah likes should be commended.

well what is silly is that people talk about what the elders say instead of what Jesus Christ said. that we are to live in the world but not of the world. therefore we are to discern what is Godly , what is moral , what is pure and what isnt.
either we live as the bible tells us or we are just playing christian (which means to be christ like).

thank you. the arabs in the middle east who are muslim hate the west because of the cultural things such as our cinema, literature television and music that is immoral, riddled with sex , violence and filthy language. so those are the reasons they dont like us and now Khalil is saying it is ok? they should make up their minds.
those are the reasons christians shouldnt go to "most" films but we are not banned from going to the cinema as a christian. some cults like jehova witnesses dont allow it though.

'be careful of the company you keep'
your 'company' is not just your friends. but magazines, books, newspapers, tv, MOVIES etc that you keep around you and COMMUNICATE with you.
think a bit deeper bro.
and in regard going to school, in the Quran it says we must gain knowledge. i use this knowledge i have learned in school to bring me closer to Allah. bro, you will be judged on your intention, remember that.
there is NO seperation with religion and the secular life of a true believer. and bro, thats standard.

If you going with your boyfriend, sucking face, andgroping each other -by Christian standards I'd agree with the elders.
If you are going to see a movie that contains too much sex, violence, profanity, ect-again by Christian standards I agree with the elders.
However, the problem is not going to the movies but if you are a true Christian it is what are you going to do while at the movie and the content of the movie.

Wrong. I have family members that are JW. They are allowed go to the movies. It is the content or subject matter of the movie in which they are cautious not to attend if it is deemed "unchristian like". Heck as an adult, there are some movies that I don't watch because of the content. I don't approve of young children seeing movies such as Friday ect..that's why they have cinema ratings.
At age 19, I went clubbing with my cousin and her friends who are JW.Her parents did not get upset as long as we went for the reason such as enjoying the music and dancing as she wasa youngster once. As my aunt explained, her problem lies if we start drinking, smoking, leaving the club with dudes and not returning home. But that is out of respect for one's self not religion.
