I wrote a thesis papaer on this subject about a year and a half ago.
You ask the question whether anyone 'believes' in 'this stuff'. There is nothing to believe once you have grounded yourself in factual knowledge. The zombies you want to know about are NOT people who have died and been resurrected with magic-
Although, I will argue that if you don't want to 'believe' THAT is possible then you shouldn't believe the Biblical account of ressurection either-After all, dead dogs have have been revived shortly after death

Nonetheless, are 'zombies' of the Vodun class persons who were very much alive and otherwise deliberately placed in stasis with drugs; these drugs are used in very finely measured amounts to reduce the body's metabolic rate to state indistinguishable from death, since while poisoned by the substances, life-signs are extremely difficult to detect even medically. The person is pronounced dead, formally buried, and then a second drug is used to neutralized the first agent. A third drug is used to maintain conscious stasis [hypnotic state]so that the individual is only barely able to respond to rudimentary suggestion[s], hence-a zombie. Often persons who are subjected to this are targeted after committing some anti-social act, or are otherwise criminals; the penalty of zombificationconsideredthe more humanealternative to outright death.
