The Origins of Modern Church Practices

The following summary is neither complete nor detailed. Note that all of these practices are post-Biblical, post-apostolic, and mostly influenced by pagan culture.

1: The order of Worship

The Sunday Morning Order of Worship- Evolved from Gregory's Mass in the sixth century to the revisions made by Luther, Calvin, the Puritans, the Free Church tradition, the Methodists, the Frontier-Revivalists, and the Pentecostals.

Taking the Lord's Supper Quarterly- Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531).

The ''Communion Table''- Introduced by Ulrich Zwingli. The candles on top of the Communion Table and Incense Burning- Borrowed from the ceremonial court of Roman Emperors in the forth century.

The Altar-Call- Invented by 17th-century Methodist and popularized by Charles Finney (1792-1872).

Bowing Heads with Eyes Closed and Raising the Hand in Response to a Salvation Message- Billy Graham in the 20th century.

Solo or Choral Music Played During the Offering- 20th century Pentecostals.

2: The Sermon

The Modern Sermon- Borrowed from the Greek sophist, who were masters at oratory and rhetoric. John Chrysostom (347-407) and Augustine (354-430) popularized the Greco-Roman homily (sermon) and made it a central part of the Christian faith. * Theological Preaching and not Reading the Scriptures.

3: The Church Building

The church Building- Started by Constantine around A.D. 327. The first church buildings were patterned after the Roman basilicas which were modeled after Greek temples.

The Pastor's Chair- Derived from the cathedral, which was the bishop's chair or throne. This chair replaced the seat of the judge in the Roman basilica.

Stained Glass Windows- First introduced by Gregory of Tours (538-593) and brought to perfection by Suger (1081-1151), abbot of St. Denis.

The Steeple- Rooted in ancient Babylon and Egyptian architecture and philosophy, the steeple was a medieval invention that was popularized and modernized by Sir Christopher Wren in London around 1666.

4: The Pastor

Hierarchical Leadership- Brought into the church by Constantine in the fourth century. This was the leadership style of the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans.

The Title " Pastor ''- Catholic priest who became ministers were not universally called " Pastors " until the 18th century under the influence of Lutheran Pietists.

5. Sunday Morning Costumes

Christians Wearing Their " Sundays Best " for church- Began in the late 18th century with the Industrial Revolution and became widespread in the mid-19th century. The practice is rooted in the emerging middle class effort to become like their wealthy aristocrat contemporaries.

The Clergy Costume- Began in A.D. 330 when Christian clergy began wearing the garb of Roman officials. By the 12th century, the clergy began wearing everyday street cloths that distinguished them from the people.

The Clerical ( Backwards ) Collar- Invented by Rev. Dr. Donald Mcleod of Glasgow in 1865.

The Evangelical Pastor's Suit- A descendant of the black scholar's gown worn by Reformation ministers, the black lounge suit of the 20th century became the typical costume of the modern pastor.

6. Ministers of Music

The Choir- Provoked by Constantine's desire to mimic the professional music used in Roman imperial ceremonies. In the fourth century, the Christians borrowed the choir idea from the choirs used in Greek dramas and Greek temples.

The Boys Choir- Began in the fourth century, borrowed from the boys choirs used by the pagans.

The Worship Team- Calvary Chapel in 1965, patterned after the secular rock concert.

7. Clergy Salaries

Clergy Salaries- Instituted by Constantine in the fourth century.

8. Baptism and the Lord's Supper

Infant Baptism- Rooted in the superstitious beliefs that pervaded the Greco-Roman culture, it was brought into Christian faith in the late second century. By the fifth century, it replaced adult baptism.

Sprinkling Replacing Immersion- Began in the late Middle Ages in the Western churches.

The " Sinner's Prayer "- Invented by D.L. Moody (1837-1899) and made popular in the 1950s with Billy Graham's Peace With God tract and later with Campus Crusade for Christ's Four Spiritual Laws.

Use of the Term " Personal Savior "- Spawned in the mid-1800s by the Frontier-Revivalist influence and popularized by Charles Fuller (1887-1968).

The Lord's Supper Condensed From a Full '' Agape '' Meal to Only the Cup and the Bread- The late second century as a result of pagan ritual influences.
9. Christian Education

The Catholic Seminary- The first seminary began as a result of the Council of Trent (1545-1563). The curriculum was based on the teachings of Thomas Aquinas which was a blending of Aristotle's philosophy, NeoPlatonic philosophy, and Christian doctrine.

The Protestant Seminary- Began in Andover, Massachusetts in 1808. It too was built on the teachings of Thomas Aquinas.

The Bible College- Influenced by the revivalism of D.L. Moody (1837-1899), the first two Bible colleges were The Missionary Training Institute ( Nyack College, New York ) in 1882 and Moody Bible Institute ( Chicago ) in 1886.

The Sunday School- Invented by Robert Raikes from Britain in 1780. Raikes did not found the Sunday School for the purpose of religious instruction. He founded it to teach poor children the basics of education.

The Youth Pastor- Invented in urban churches in the late 1930s and 40s as a result of seeking to meet the needs of a new sociological class called " teenagers"

[align=center]SUNDAY IS THE COUNTERFEIT DAY OF WORSHIP[/align]

[align=center]Sunday keeping was introduced directly from paganism during the second century or later[/align]

[align=center]Sabbath in the New Testament. According to Luke 4:16, it was Y'shua's "custom" to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath day. Moreover, at the time of Y'shua's death and burial, the women who had followed Him from Galilee "rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment" (Luke 23:56), indicating that there had been no instruction from Him to the contrary. They were still observing the seventh day of the week! We may, in addition, take note of the fact that the implication of this text is that when Luke wrote the account several decades after Y'shua's crucifixion he took for granted that no change in Sabbath observance had occurred. He reports this Sabbath observance "according to the commandment" in a totally matter-of-fact way, with no hint that there had been any new day of worship added in the interim.[/align]

[align=center]Y'shua's never conceded to have broken the Sabbath commandment. On the contrary He defended Himself and His disciples from the charge of Sabbath breaking by appealing to the Scriptures: "Have you read . . ." (Matt 12:3-5). The intent of Y'shua's provocative Sabbath teachings and activities was NOT to pave the way for Sunday keeping, but rather to show the true meaning and function of the Sabbath, namely, a day "to do good" (Matt 12:8), "to save life" (Mark 3:4), to loose people from physical and spiritual bonds (Luke 13:16), and to show "mercy" rather than religiosity (Matt 12:7). [/align]

[align=center]Measures Taken by the Church of Rome. The Church of Rome adopted concrete measures to wean Christians away from Sabbathkeeping and to encourage Sunday worship instead. The Origin of Sunday Worship[/align]

[align=center]The Holy Scriptures, from beginning to end, declare the seventh day of the week, the Sabbath, as the day on which Elohim is to be honored and worshipped by his people. Since it is so evident that Sunday was not given a place of prominence in the Scriptures or by Christ and his disciples, then the next questions naturally follow: Where did worship on Sunday come from? When did the church begin worshipping on Sunday? Who made the change? And why?[/align]

[align=center]For many people of the world, and long before Yahusha' arrived in the manger, Sunday was the day of worship. But not worship of Yahuwah, the creator of the universe. Sunday was the day on which all the other nations of the world worshipped their gods. The very name "Sunday" is derived from the day on which the sun was worshipped. Sun worship can be traced through just about every ancient civilization known to man. The Chaldeans, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Medo-Persians, the Grecians and the Romans were sun worshippers.[/align]

It was known as "Mithraism," and had to do with the worship of the sun as did other forms of heathenism; but its philosophy was more fascinating than the more crude form of paganism and made a pretence of holding up high standards of morality. [align=center]"The early Gentile Christians had at first adopted the Jewish seven-day week, with its numbered week days, but by the close of the third century A.D. this began to give way to the planetary week; and in the fourth and fifth centuries the pagan designations became generally accepted in the western half of Christendom. [align=center]Constantine and the Venerable Day of the Sun[/align]

[align=center]In the early fourth century, Emperor Constantine established Christianity as the official state religion of the Roman world. Christians of our day think that Constantine was something of a hero for Christianity. Stories are told how he had a vision in which he saw the sign of the cross of Jesus and was told by a voice from heaven to conquer the heathen peoples by the sign of the cross. He subsequently, according to the stories, converted to Christ and was compelled to use his status and influence to bring the rest of the world to Christ by enacting a law stating that the Christian religion was the only religion recognized by Rome. Well, the stories are greatly exaggerated and distorted. [/align]

[align=center]Fact: Constantine did enact a civil law in 321 which prohibited manual labor on Sunday and that Sunday be observed and honored. But he did not do this because he was a genuine Christian. On the contrary, he used the Christian label to promote and honor the sun god, whom he worshipped. [/align]

[align=center]He enjoined the observance, or rather forbade the public desecration of Sunday, not under the name of Sabbatum, but under its old astrological and heathen title, Dies Solis. familiar to all his subjects, so that the law was as applicable to the worshippers of Hercules, Apollo, and Mithras, as to the Christians. There is no reference whatsoever in his law either to the fourth commandment or to the resurrection of Christ (Richard Rives, http://www.toolong.com\remember.htm). [/align]

[align=center]Fact: Constantine was a pagan to every inch of his body. He was a non-discriminatory heathen.[/align]

[align=center]Constantine worshipped all the gods - especially Apollo the god of the sun. He held the title Pontifex Maximus which was the title of the high priest of paganism. These and other considerations make it clear that Constantine's form of Christianity was actually a modified version of mystery religion. - The Mystery of Iniquity that had been at work since the time of Babel (Ibid.)[/align]

[align=center]Constantine saw something that the emperors before him did not see - the opportunity to make peace through compromise. He never really converted to Christianity. But what he did accomplish was to convert Christianity to paganism. He was a pawn in Satan's hand to pervert the Christian faith with all of paganism's trappings.[/align]

[align=center]In 2 Thessalonians 2, Shaul spoke about the mystery of iniquity:[/align]

[align=center]For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work... then that lawless one will be revealed (2:7,8)[/align]

[align=center]There was already a work of Satan going on in the days of the apostles which has as its goal the establishment of Satan's government on earth with the lawless one as its leader. This conspiracy was "at work" in Shaul's day, but had its beginning much earlier. Part of the plan of that conspiracy was to replace God's laws and commandments with his own. Thus, Daniel prophesied:[/align]

[align=center]He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law (Daniel 7:25)[/align]

[align=center]Satan did successfully wear down the saints through persecution over several hundred years. So, by the early fourth century, the Christian church was ready and willing to compromise their faith and practices to gain peace and acceptance by the Roman government.[/align]

[align=center]Emperor Constantine sensed the condition of believers in Christ in his day and realized that he could corral the entire Christian church unto himself. He proposed a slight change for the Christians to bring them in line with all of the other faiths in the Roman world. He declared Sunday to be the official day of worship for Christians, thereby successfully altering "times and law" - that is - the times for worship of Yahuwah as written in His Torah. His offer of compromise saw the Christians gain both acceptance of their peers and an end of persecution. Christians also gained a few others things in the compromise. They gained a new day of worship - Sunday which replaced Sabbath. They gained a new celebration - Christmas, which replaced the Festival of Tabernacles. They gained a new festive celebration in Easter and gave up the old "Jewish" custom of Passover.[/align]

[align=center]Shaul referred to this work of Satan as the "mystery of lawlessness" because the changing of Yahuwah's laws is at the heart of it. The Sabbath has always been the day on which Yahuwah wants his people to worship Him. But Satan perverted this by changing the day to Sunday when the Christian Church was at its weakest point. By "wearing down the saints" he succeeded in changing God's laws. Thus it was a smooth transition the Christian church had to make. Believers gave up their "Jewish" customs and took up the pagan customs, which were simply renamed to make them palatable.[/align]

[align=center]And the term "mystery" used by Shaul alludes to the pagan mystery religion, which originated in Babylon and featured a mother and her child. By featuring "mysteries" in his religious system, Satan was able to both hide the lies he propagated from being exposed, and he made it intriguing for people to investigate the "hidden things." [/align]

[align=center]This same system, characterized by the shrouding of truth in secrecy and the manipulation of the truth in order to achieve it’s ends, set out, in the third century (sic), to combine paganism with Christianity. These goals were partially accomplished through the proclamation on March 7th 321 A.D. of Constantine the Great, stating, "All judges and city people and the craftsmen shall rest upon The Venerable Day of the Sun." (Ibid.) [/align]

[align=center]By changing the Sabbath to Sunday, Constantine effectively sealed the Christian church into a pursuit of "lawlessness" - that is, a way of worship contrary to Yahuwah's Torah (law), which the church is indulged in to this very day.[/align]

[align=center]Further proof that Constantine was no more of a Christian than the Pope is a Protestant can be seen in his actions following his "conversion." He had [/align]

[align=center]his wife and eldest son murdered and had a bronze statue of himself set atop a tall column as[/align]

[align=center]And he minted a coin in his own honor.[/align]

[align=center]On one side is the head of Constantine. On the other side is the sun god Sol Invictus with the inscription "Sol Invicto Comiti" - "Committed to the invincible sun." (Ibid.) [/align]

[align=center]Is it any wonder that Sunday is so named? It is the day for worshipping the sun and it was established for the church by an emperor who was committed to the worshipping of the sun.[/align]

To find out for the first time that the way of life and worship in most Christian churches is nothing but a counterfeit of the true way Elohim wants his people to follow can be a devastating experience. But Yahuwah is calling out his people from the practices and traditions of paganism which have crept into and have dominated the people called by his name. It is time to repent and to return to the ways of Yahuwah Elohim.[/align]

[align=center]The Christian Church has been duped into thinking that Elohim has setup Sunday as the day for worshipping Yahusha' the Savior. But Yahuwah never did this. The establishment of Sunday in place of the Sabbath as the day of worshipping the Creator is part of the work of Satan to establish his own government on earth. Constantine, who was thoroughly pagan, changed the Sabbath to Sunday by official decree. And Christians have been worshipping their God on Satan's day ever since.[/align]

[align=center]Yahuwah established the Sabbath, at creation, to be set apart as holy unto Himself. The Sabbath is the time when Elohim wants all of his people to cease their labor and to honor Him and fellowship with Him. The Scriptures are full of references to the Sabbath as the appropriate time for worship. But, in stark contrast, the Bible says absolutely nothing about Sunday as a sacred day. How much clearer does it have to be to convince a Christian people to leave behind their pagan customs and traditions and return to the biblical practice of obeying the commandments which honor the Creator.[/align]

The Igbo Benei-YSRAEL OF NIGERIA, sometimes addressed as "Igbo Jews" or as a part of the

"Yehudim Maghrebim" (North and West African Jews) are an Igbo (Ibo) ethnic group whom descended from the southern and westward migrations of both ancient Semitic and later Israeli peoples from the Middle East into Africa. In more modern times the ancestral homeland of the Igbo is in the Southeast and Western regions of Nigeria. The area where a majority of Igbo dwells straddles the River Niger, which divides the River and the Anambra States. Nigeria operates on a federal structure, of 36 states and the capital Abuja. The overall Igbo populations are normally found in the states of: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers State, Delta State, and Imo.

The oral traditions of the Igbo maintain that their presence has been in what is termed "Iboland" for

over 1500 years. The same oral histories also state that their ancestors were migrants from ancient Israel,

possibly beginning with the Semitic migrations from Northern Arabia into Eastern Africa around 500 BCE.

The Lemba are a black Southern African Bantu speaking group who claim to have Jewish ancestry. They observe customs that suggest a Jewish link such as not eating pork, male circumcision, and keeping one day a week holy. According to their oral history, they came to Africa from "Sena in the north by boat". The original group, which is said to have been almost entirely male, made its way to the coasts of Eastern Africa. If the Lemba do indeed have Jewish ancestry then one might expect to find a similarity between the Y CHROMOSOMES of Lemba men and those of Jewish men living in other parts of the world.

In a recent study the Y chromosomes of around 136 Lemba were compared to the Y chromosomes of Sephardic Jews, Yemeni, and non-Lemba Bantu speakers. The study's results were suggestive of a genetic history the Lemba that is not incompatible with the Lemba's oral tradition. Researchers found evidence of Semitic origin in the Lemba.

The study also found that the Lemba carry the Cohen modal HAPLOTYPE (CMH) at a frequency similar to that found in Jewish populations,was significantly higher than that of theAshkenazi. The CMH has been suggested as a signature for the ancient Hebrew population. In fact, the Lemba men who showed a very high frequency of the CMH were those who identified themselves as belonging to the Buba clan. The Buba is recognized as the senior of the twelve Lemba clans, being the oldest and for some ritual purposes the most important. In many ways the Buba may be likened to the Cohen. Non-Lemba Bantu speakers in the study did not carry the CMH.

The researchers concluded that theCMH present in Lemba men have an exclusively Jewish origin. The genetic evidence is therefore consistent with the Lemba oral tradition of a Jewish origin.
