No Scholarly Footnotes

Also, since publication of the book in 1974, many critics have rightfully asked Afrocentrists why there is no corroboration in the form of footnotes and specific documentary references to help prove what “THE DESTRUCTION” says are the misdeeds of Muslims in African history. The answer they give is that it was the partial loss of his vision and/or blindness that prevented chancellor Williams from doing the scholarly job of guiding readers to his primary and secondary sources of information and historical facts. He himself set up that excuse on page 17 when he wrote that, “The writing plan for the two volumes would have required at least another five years, even if the serious impairment of my vision had not occurred...THE DESTRUCTION OF BLACK CIVILIZATION, therefore, could not wait another five years just to be more detailed, impressive, or massive in scope...”

But this excuse is not sufficient. In 1961, fourteen years earlier, he wrote a book entitled THE REBIRTH OF AFRICAN CIVILIZATION and it was there that he first excused himself from his footnoting responsibility by writing on page 2 that:

“There is also a deliberate curb on footnotes throughout the work. This is really because of our own annoyance at having to stop on every page in some works to read the references. “

So this proves that dodging and skipping over his duty to footnote was not new to Chancellor Williams and now the eyesight excuse that he used in 1974 must be called into question. How long does it take to tell the reader what book title and page number a certain idea, quote, and/or concept came from? It surely doesn’t take five years, as Williams said, to do what John G. Jackson did, for example, in his excellent books, especially his The INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN CIVILIZATION, where he cited the source book’s name, page number and author in the body of the paragraphs as he wrote. Therefore, it is very important that Williams be seen and exposed as having had a serious flaw in his historical credibility and character.

Chancellor Williams’s Training in Propaganda Writing

What researchers and investigative critics of THE DESTRUCTION OF BLACK CIVILIZATION are anxious to analyze and scrutinize are what Chancellor Williams called his “documentary sources”. On page 20, item #3, under the section called “Origins and Steps in the Study” he said, “These [documentary sources] are available in both Europe and America. Reports of Colonial Administrators in Africa, parliamentary debates, reports and letters from missionaries to their respective societies’ home offices.” He told us where and when he began his training in psychological warfare and propaganda writing:

“I arrived in England in the fall of 1953 to begin formal studies at Oxford University, primarily through the Institute of Colonial Studies and Rhodes House (which might be more properly called Africa House).” [p.24]

In 1953, most of the third world and people of color were under bloody and humiliating colonial rule; their lands were being occupied mainly by the British. Rhodes House was most probably named after Cecil Rhodes, the notorious empire-builder, who envisioned Africa colonized from the “Cape to Cairo”. The brilliant author and historian, Basil Davidson offers us insight into Cecil Rhodes’ thinking:


Cecil Rhodes uttered a comment which may stand as typical.

“You will,” he told the Legislative Assembly of the Cape Province, “remove [the Africans] from that life of sloth and laziness: you will teach them the dignity of labor and make them contribute to the prosperity of the State: and make them give some return for our wise and good government.”

Chancellor Williams studied at Rhodes House, which he admiringly said might be called” properly” Africa House?

But Walter Rodney said of Cecil Rhodes and his Rhodes scholarships that,

“Cecil Rhodes could afford to leave a legacy of lavish scholarships to white students for study at Oxford University, having made a fortune from exploiting Africa and Africans...When Cecil Rhodes sent in his agents to rob and steal in Zimbabwe, they and other Europeans marveled at the surviving ruins of the Zimbabwe culture, and automatically assumed that it had been built by white people.”

So, by 1961, when African freedom-fighters were grappling with the problems of eventually restoring their liberated continent to some semblance of order, dignity, and African cultural pride, it was quite easy for Chancellor Williams, a former teacher of English, serving his British masters, to demean Africa’s courageous attempts to Africanize its national languages by writing in his book:

“But English is here, is a world language, and is much needed. Use of English should not be discouraged because of one’s strong hatred of colonialism, as so many of our confused anti-colonialist friends urge...The most groundless fear is that English will destroy the country’s culture. Quite the contrary, English can help to save and enrich that culture”

The White (oops!) Arabs

By playing the race card in THE DESTRUCTION OF BLACK CIVILIZATION, Williams believed that his anti Muslim attacks and Arab-bashing would be more readily accepted. He obviously felt that the best way to thoroughly malign these victimized people were to make them into “white” Arab slave masters just like, as he put it, their counterparts, the “white” European slave masters.

Seemingly frustrated and angered at African Americans for converting to the religion of Al-Islam, Chancellor Williams reacted by calling them mixed up and confused (negative characterizations, sounds familiar) because they were also changing their European names to Qur’anic Arabic names.

[Chancellor Willaims] He got carried away and opportunistically injected race into his argument, but made a telling mistake that he had to change in later editions:

“For the Arabs themselves are a white people, the Semitic division of Caucasians... [Page 23, first edition, first printing, copyright 1974] “

In later editions of “THE DESTRUCTION” the above statement was deleted, and for good reasons, namely that on that point about “white Arabs”, the’ great African historian, W.E.B. Dubois said that:

“Anyone who has traveled in the Sudan knows that most of the “Arabs” he has met are dark-skinned, sometimes practically black, often have Negroid features, and hair that may be almost Negro in quality. It is then obvious that in Africa the term “Arab” is applied to any people professing Islam, however much race mixture has occurred, so that while the term has a cultural value it is of little ethnic significance and is often misleading... The Arabs were too nearly akin to Negroes to draw an absolute color line. “

The white Arab statement that Williams tried to put over on the reader, but later had to delete, is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of lies, distortions and half-truths that he made throughout his book.

John Henrik Clarke on Muslims in African History

Another of the most notorious and divisive so-called writer/historians who seemingly hate Muslims, we have John Henrik Clarke His role in the propaganda campaign against Al-Islam is that of a facilitator and cheerleader To our knowledge he hasn’t committed to writing nearly the number of outright lies about the role of Muslims in African history like Chancellor Williams or Yusef Ben Jochannan, but in countless taped speeches and interviews, Clarke can be heard slandering and denigrating the religion and its adherents.


John Henrik Clarke has written forwards for several books over the last twenty years and he has edited many others. He wrote the introduction to John G. Jackson’s 1971 masterpiece entitled INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN CIVILIZATIONS and he wrote conservatively that

“The influence of Islam and the Arabs in East Africa has been highly overstated. This influence was not always for the better. In fact, the Arabs, like all of the other invaders of Africa, did more harm than good...Their role in the East African slave trade brought wreck and ruin to the nation states in this part of Africa- They were not without achievements, but their achievements are outweighed by the harm they did.”

But Clarke’s chief strategy is to publish, promote, and establish forums for others who have no qualms with serious Muslim-bashing.
In his 1990 book, MALCOLM X: THE MAN AND HIS TIMES, Clarke included a transcribed 1966 speech by a Reverend Albert Cleage who said about Malcolm, Muslims and slavery that :

“Brother Malcolm knew history... Malcolm knew that the Arab Muslims had been the backbone of the slave trade. Those of you who have a sentimental attachment to the “Black Muslims”, in America, or the Muslims that happen to be black, might not like to remember the slave trade with black Africans in Africa was fostered, encouraged, and carried on by the Arab Muslims in Africa” (p 15-16)

Malcolm NEVER stated in ANY publication or speech that "Arab Muslims had been the backbone of African slavery"

Malcolm obviously at this point had been assassinated....

Why is it important for us to know that John Henrik Clarke was once a member of the BLYDEN SOCIETY? Brunson and Rashidi, in an interview with the great historian John G. Jackson begin to provide the answer:

In 1932 Jackson became the Associate Director of the Blyden Society. Named after the great Pan-Africanist Edward Wilmot Blyden, the Blyden Society played an outstanding role as an African-American support group for Ethiopia, after Italy’s brutal 1935 invasion of that country. The Blyden Society was then under the leadership of Dr. Willis Nathaniel Huggins, the organization’s founder, and an absolutely brilliant scholar and Pan-Africanist. Among the very early and, as Jackson is quick to point out, most talented students to come out of the Blyden Society is the now highly respected John Henrik Clarke [African Presence in Early Asia, p. 198, by Ivan Van Sertima and Runoko Rashidi

Marcus Garvey, the great Pan-Africanist leader was so enamored with Blyden that he wrote the following in a pamphlet, July-August, 1914:

“You who do not know anything of your ancestry will do well to read the works of Blyden, one of our historians and chroniclers, who have done so much to retrieve the lost prestige of the race, and to undo the selfishness of alien historians and their history which has said so little and painted us so unfairly. Dr. Blyden is such an interesting character to study that I take pleasure in reproducing the... passages from his CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM AND THE NEGRO RACE...”

Given the above information about Blyden and the Blyden Society, what -is left is for the reader to now read his works. Blyden’s premiere piece of literature was his CHRISTIANITY, ISLAM AND THE NEGRO RACE, written in 1887. From this four-hundred page book, we have extracted several of what we felt were his- most important observations and statements about Al-Islam and Muslims in Africa.

The four chapters and pages in which these statements were lifted were Mohammedanism and the Negro Race, page 1; Mohammedanism in Western Africa, page 173; Islam and Race Distinctions, page 241; and Mohammedans of Nigritia, page 306.

John Henrik Clarke’s views about the religion of Al-Islam, Muslims, and Arabs in particular, contrast sharply with those of Edward Wilmot Blyden’s views. Blyden was on the African continent before the Europeans colonized the Motherland; John Henrik Clarke was not. Blyden was an eye-witness that formulated his opinions firsthand; John Henrik Clarke was to the contrary. We ask who was in the better position to give an objective and accurate assessment of the Islamic impact on Africa, Edward Wilmot Blyden in the 19th century or John Henrik Clarke in the 20th?

The CIA

John Henrik Clarke has probably been Chancellor Williams’s foremost supporter and has endorsed his book, THE DESTRUCTION OF BLACK CIVILIZATION, on several occasions. Chancellor Williams made some strange but telling statements during his “research” phase leading to the publication of his book in 1974. These statements point to possible involvement of the Central Intelligence Agency/British intelligence communities Statements such as :

“As indicated “, said Williams, “the American embassy in Khartoum did none of the preparatory work about which I give the US embassies throughout Africa so much praise, although it had six months notice before my arrival “[first edition] A later edition, changed somewhat, read in full :

[Chancellor Williams] “The United States Department of State had notified the American embassy m each country that I was coming, requesting our ambassadors to give any requested assistance Excepting the Sudan, where embassy officials appeared to be under some kind of fear, the embassies, everywhere, went all out to be helpful The embassies had the very important work of making the advance arrangements for trips into the interior through the appropriate ministries in each country As indicated above, the American embassy in Khartoum did none of the preparatory work about which I give the other U S African embassies so much praise, although it had six months notice before my arrival”

“The reason the CIA office(s). ..(were)... located in the embassies, as it is in most other countries in the world”, wrote John Marks in the book, DIRTY WORK: THE CIA IN WESTERN EUROPE, edited by Philip Agée,

“is that by presidential order the State Department is responsible for hiding and housing the CIA...State confers respectability on the Agency’s operatives, dressing them up with the same titles and calling cards that give legitimate diplomats entree into foreign government circles. Protected by diplomatic immunity, the operatives recruit local officials as CIA agents to supply secret intelligence and, especially in the Third World, to help in the Agency’s manipulation of a country’s internal affairs.” [p. 30]

Chancellor Williams manipulated and dipped into the internal affairs of the African country of Sudan. Involved in a civil war, the Sudanese were apparently suspicious of his trip and, as he admitted, seemed fearful of him. And to verify the Khartoum government’ a suspicions, Chancellor Williams promised to wage a propaganda war against the African nation if they did not comply with his “study” request. He threatened them by saying the following:

“I, therefore, prepared to leave at once, but announced that I did not beg to study anywhere, and that the world would learn that this was the Only African state where an African scholar was barred” [first edition].

Not only were the Sudanese suspicious, but the brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe were suspicious, too. The United States State Department was giving Williams too much assistance but, also, the hated and hateful Ian Smith regime of “Rhodesia”,

Williams wrote on page 29, “to the surprise of just about everyone, pulled out all stops as though it had resolved to outmatch all the black states in amenities and various kinds of assistance beyond all expectations or needs. There was the usual press conference, followed by front page head- line coverage of my mission.” Note the following:

“Our Zimbabwe friends were somewhat suspicious of the motives behind all this red carpet treatment for a black American, especially when it continued after my uncompromising replies to questions on a TV broadcast panel session” [p. 30].

You see now this is where you end up making yourself look foolish by selectively quote bits of the mans books that YOU think makes your case.... Actually on pg 17 of the preview which you alluded to..it states: THIS WORK IS A SUMMARY OF THE 16 YEARS OF RESEARCH, and field studies which were intended for a 2 volume history of the AFRICAN PEOPLE. Chancellor Williams goes on: 'the writing plan for volume TWO would have required at least a furthe five years, even if the serious impairment of my vision had not occured'...

Now come on now..lets not LIE on the man..tell the truth and stop twisting it....



On pg 21 of the SAME book he states: WE [note the word we and not I] began in the lands bordering the mediterranian on the north and extending southwards on bothsides of the Nile below the 10th Parrallel... [So from this short passage WE can deduce that he did not conduct his research BY HIMSELF, this being the case your cheap shop about his vision and the accuracy of his work is well out of order..]

The man also state on pg 23, 'Blacks in the united states seem to be more mixed up and confused over the search for racial identity than anywhere else. Hence many are dropping their WHITE Western slavemaster names and adopting, not AFRICAN, but Arab and Berber Slavemasters names! The confusion will continue, however as long as the fact that millions of mulattoes in Arab countries are considered 'white' is ignored along with the other fact that countless unmixed, sun baked desert dwelleg Arabs are not only brown but some are very dark in colour......indeed[he goes on to say] not only did mulattoes consider themselves 100 percent Arab, but jet black Africans, whose forebares were in arabia for generations, speak Arabic and call themselves 'Arabs' just like African Americans speak English and call themselves 'Americans'.

CIA Recruitment


In DIRTY WORK: THE CIA IN AFRICA, 1979, Agee relates how Howard University (most likely Chancellor Williams’s employer at the time of his “research” into Africa) was targeted for CIA recruitment, seeking agents to work in Africa. In the following, Agee introduces the story of a professor who was approached by the Agency, but later confessed and exposed the ordeal to the world:

Kemba Maish, 33, is a professor of psychology at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the preeminent black university in the United States. She teaches clinical and community psychology. She is a member of the Association of Black Psychologists, and has been very active in black organizations since the 60s. Her doctoral dissertation was on Black Power and Pan Africanism. Imagine her surprise, then, some months ago, when she returned a phone message she had received at Howard and heard the operator answer, “Personnel, CIA.” This was the beginning of uncovering a pervasive and sinister CIA recruitment program for Africa, aimed at black professionals at Howard and elsewhere [p. 86].

Kemba Maish exposed the CIA recruiter, who happened to be African American, in an interview on the Howard University radio station. She related how she had seriously reprimanded one of her Howard University colleagues for giving the CIA recruiter her name as a possible candidate. In the interview, Maish summed her personal philosophy by stating knowledgeably, clearly and courageously to the radio audience the following:

"At this point in time, in the “Third World” in general, and the African countries (Africa and the Caribbean) in particular, the masses of people are rising up against the old order characterized by centuries of colonialism and neo-colonialism. The CIA has had a long history of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries. By putting down just rebellions of the people, destabilizing governments, destroying organizations, planning and financing coups, and murdering leaders, the CIA has attempted to change the course of history in places like the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica, Cuba, Chile, Iran, the Congo, Ghana and Angola, just to name a few. In the African world they have found it much easier to infiltrate by using black agents rather than white. In fact, it was black CIA agents, born in America, who were instrumental in the overthrow of Kwame Nkruthah in Ghana in 1966 and in the invasion of Guinea in 1970" [p. 92].
