Leviticus 19:28 (Amplified) - "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord."

I know some will have a hard time receiving this teaching because tattooing has now become

Good question LD. To really get an understanding of what the bible says you must understand the context. who is being written to and what are the circumstances that involve the (in this case) practice.

tatooing had a very different symbolism in those and later times. and they are incitefull of some questionable practices or ideals even today. there certainly are innocent people who tatoo for the sake of being in vogue, but their are tats that go beyond this.

Lev. 19 spoke to certain practices that was attached to idolatry, which jehovah hated (having another god before Him).

is tatooing a sin, nope. but idolatry so the symbolism is what is the danger.

here is what one commentary said about Lev 19:28 -Notes for Verse 28
Verse 28. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead -- The practice of making deep gashes on the face and arms and legs, in time of bereavement, was universal among the heathen, and it was deemed a becoming mark of respect for the dead, as well as a sort of propitiatory offering to the deities who presided over death and the grave. The Jews learned this custom in Egypt, and though weaned from it, relapsed in a later and degenerate age into this old superstition (Isa 15:2 Jer 16:6 Jer 41:5).

nor print any marks upon you -- by tattooing, imprinting figures of flowers, leaves, stars, and other fanciful devices on various parts of their person. The impression was made sometimes by means of a hot iron, sometimes by ink or paint, as is done by the Arab females of the present day and the different castes of the Hindus. It it probable that a strong propensity to adopt such marks in honor of some idol gave occasion to the prohibition in this verse; and they were wisely forbidden, for they were signs of apostasy; and, when once made, they were insuperable obstacles to a return. (See allusions to the practice, Isa 44:5 Rev. 13:17 Rev. 14:1).
Notes for Verse 30

If we can't wear the above, then what can we tattoo on ourselves?

i did not say we could not bama girl. that was an issue at the time with the people in that region where israel was. moses spoke to it because the israelites were starting to follow kind. these laws were strictly for the jews and moses did not speak to those outside of his nation. God was impressing upon them that they were starting to practice idolatry by using symbols that praised these gods. it was an israeli thing.

idolatry is not only in statues and tatoos, but how you behold your car, your home, anything that you put above obidience to God.

a tat won't send you to hell or bring down the wrath of God upon you as it did in OT times.

how do you feel when you see the ayrans with all the tats on their necks and arms bodly professing hatred and white power? have you ever seen satanist tats, there are some pretty obnoxious ones out there graphic and the message is clear. witches and wiccans have certain tats to identify themselves to others.

the laws that God gave to israel were to guide them through and keep them to full fill the promise made to Abraham and to Adam and Eve in the garden.

when israel sought after God and obeyed they were invincible. but when they went whoring after other God's he allowed even the heathen nations to chasten them. there was a point in time where their was only one human in line to keep the session of the line of David alive to full fill the promise.

these laws were given to israel to help them follow after God and not be drawn aside. the old testament laws were for jews oops! israel.

if you are a christian be selective in what you choose to have tatooed on your body.

it is like the short hair spoken of in corinthians. the context was not to set a precedent for women to not cut their hair if they chose to. jsut like long dresses do not make a woman holy, short hair or baldness does not make them sinners.

the context to the corinthian scriptures was in speaking to the 1000s or women who worshipped in the temple of diiana i believe it was. these women shaved their heads for as long as they were servants to the temple. some of these women had started to come to church and paul was dealing with the symbolism of the moment that aligned them to dianah and the temple.

because God is a jealous God these women had to make a decision between He and diana.
