I was shocked and both disgusted whilsy watching the olympic games opening ceremony to hear that Merlene Ottey now represents Slovenia after all the years competing for Jamaica. She was one of Jamaica's well known athletes it's a complete slap in the face to all Jamaicans.

Terrible she used to make me proud, I think she even carried the flag at on olympics. It's like Carl Lewis running for the Faroe Islands.

Black countries need to start taking their heroes very seriously treating them like they deserve to be treated instead of them (black leaders) abusing their powers via enriching themselves. Marlene Ottey's departure to Slovenia isnot only a big loss to Jamaica, but to black race as well.

Sorry Obal: but I totally disagree, Merlene Otteys switch is NOT a loss to either the black race, nor is it a loss for Jamaica.... The fact is she had her turn in the limelight it was time to give others a chance.. She should have accepted that gracefully and helped others to carry the Jamaican flag.. The fact she choose to run for some European country I feels reflects on her character and her loyalties..or lack of it..

TO KUNJUFU,
Marlene Ottey is not the first black person and certainly would not become the last one to ditch her country to compete for a white country for particular reasons. Its not about getting jealous of younger athletes and refusing to give up, its about getting treated the way they were supposed to be treated by their countries for taking their native countries to greater heights in their various fields. Look at a white country such as Britain for instance with countless unsuccessful sportmen and women who get treated good in spite of their lack of achievements at World Football Cup and other sporting competitions/events. Go to black countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria etc with amazing sportmen and women who get treated like dirts in spite of their achievements. These people hardly have homes they could call their own compared to failed sportmen and women in Britain, isn't that frustrating? Its no wonder these people changed nationality for better treatment. Poverty is not pretty sight.

i agree with K, she had her turn now let others have theirs. look at linford christie. he now trains athletes and some of those under his wing are in the olympics. its nicer to see a black person passing on their skills and talents to others. plus i am sure when the Jamaican team protested or shunned her the rest of the country probably felt the way the team did.
anyway go Jamaica jamflagi hope asafa blktrainerspowelljamflagmash up de whole a dem
ukflaggood luck for denise lewis and mark lewis-francis(mr look good)

__________________________________________________ __ Is this the case or was she simple no longer good enough to make the JA team - I suspect the latter? she is getting on after all, and there's forced to be nuff younger women eager to fill her shoes... I loved watching her when she was at her peak and in full form, I'd be gutted to see her still representing JA and notup to scratch - good riddance... Go JAMAICA!!!
