Hopkins KO 9

Questionable bodyshot that didnt land properly, Oscar punked out of this fight cos he knew he couldnt knock him out

Very good win for hopkins, although he needs to be stepping up to fight the likes of roy Jones and Tarver as he cant make a legacy out of beating up trinidad and oscar(as they ere naturally too small)

lETS BRING ON JONES V HOPKINS

You ever heard of the Golden Rule. He who has the gold makes the rules!

He who asks is a fool for five minutes. He who never asks remains a fool for ever.

OMG I guess I knew Oscar would lose but to get knocked out...OMG. I can't believe it.

Jones v. Hopkins? I thought Jones beat him already? Hopkins seems kinda....crazy. And he's always asking for 50/50..50/50 while Roy is like nah nia 60/40 and go take some english lessons.lol

Yes the KO was a suprise but then as Burning Spear said, Hopkins needed it to win (especially in Las Vegas). Sound performance from Hopkins who did outbox DeLa Hoya.

Not really a good fight as a spectacle but tactically interesting. I reversed my earlier feelins and went with Hopkins, body language and silly pre match excuses in the build up told you the outcome. Introspective quiet and unusually shy Oscar against loud confident charged up Bernard. Oscar wouldnt even meet his gaze. Oscar was soundly whooped by the favourite and he knew it. I think its the last we have seen of him.

As for Bernards future

I dont think a Tarver fight is likely as its not a big money draw and Im not sure if Roy is looking to fight at those low weights anymore (remember how jaded he was after losing weight to fight Tarver?). Losing muscle mass is far far harder than losing fat or indeed harder than gaining muscle. Hopkins would have to step up all the way to Light Heavy or Roy wouldnt consider it.

Interesting prospect thoughSomeone mentioned the money thing which isnt really that big a deal when you consider how much the public want it and how much interest it would generate.

Ashanti: a question, if by chance Hopkins fights Roy Jones should i count the lenght of the fight in seconds or Milliseconds before Jone's face hits the canvas....

Update...Hopkins Eyes Lucrative Future After KO

By TIM DAHLBERG, AP Boxing Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Bernard Hopkins' future seems certain for once, full of big fights and even bigger paydays. The future is less clear for Oscar De La Hoya, who must deal with his first knockout loss and the possibility that he may be nearing the end of a brilliant career.

A devastating hook to the body in the ninth round Saturday night didn't just help establish Hopkins as one of the all-time middleweight greats. It also raised the question of whether De La Hoya might want to finally hang up his gloves.

"I really can't answer that now," De La Hoya said. "You know us fighters have a love-hate relationship with boxing. I really can't say yes or no. I was so focused on this fight that I just can't answer that."

The answers are easier for the 39-year-old Hopkins, who became the first fighter to stop De La Hoya while running his remarkable streak of successful title defenses to 19. His wallet fat with the $10 million or so he collected for beating De La Hoya, Hopkins now has his eye on history as well.

Hopkins said he wants to make at least one more title defense to become the first fighter to defend his title 20 times, then perhaps take on light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones Jr. in another huge money bout.

"Money you can make and money you can lose," Hopkins said. "But history you can never erase. That's important to Bernard Hopkins to go down in history and be talked about like Ray Robinson is talked about now."

Hopkins, who was criticized for not capitalizing on his knockout of Felix Trinidad three years ago, doesn't plan to make the same mistake again after suddenly stopping De La Hoya in a tactical fight that really didn't live up to its advance billing.

Both Hopkins and De La Hoya fought cautiously the first half of the fight before Hopkins began taking control in the seventh and eighth rounds behind his jab. De La Hoya was losing but still competitive before a devastating left hook to his liver left him writhing on the canvas in pain.

"It paralyzes you. You can't do anything about it, and you lose your breath," De La Hoya said. "I've never experienced that in my career. You're stuck. It's like you want to get up but you can't."

De La Hoya went down on his elbows and knees, his face contorted in pain before rolling over on his back as referee Kenny Bayless waved the fight to a close at 1:38 of the ninth round.

While Hopkins jumped on the ring posts and then did a flip in celebration, De La Hoya got back on his knees and buried his face in his gloves, pounding the canvas repeatedly in frustration at an opportunity lost.

"I feel proud but obviously very disappointed," De La Hoya said. "But I don't regret it at all. I'm actually very grateful I had an opportunity to make history with Hopkins."

De La Hoya was a 2-1 underdog, and acknowledged that perhaps he had set his sights too high by moving up to middleweight to challenge a fighter who hadn't lost in so long that he didn't remember what it was like to lose.

It was the second loss in his last three fights for De La Hoya, and some think he lost the other one in June when he barely beat little known Felix Sturm in his first fight as a middleweight.

De La Hoya is boxing's biggest attraction, as evidenced by the crowd of 16,112 that filled the MGM Grand arena and the huge pay-per-view business that was expected to make the fight the richest non-heavyweight fight ever.

But whether he can continue to get people to pay while he loses fights and looks increasingly mediocre — assuming he continues to fight — remains to be seen.

"I know I can be better," De La Hoya said. "I know I can step it up a few more notches."
Hopkins, meanwhile, is still chasing a fight with Jones, the last fighter to beat him 11 years ago. There's also the possibility he could move up in weight to challenge Tarver, but for now Hopkins wants to make his 20th title defense before exploring his other options.

"I'll be 40 in January," Hopkins said. "I need big fights."

Hopkins was exuberant yet gracious after the fight, answering questions thoughtfully and inviting anyone who wanted to ask even more. He was enjoying the spotlight, enjoying his chance to shine on a stage like he had never been on before.

"I said I would be the first to knock out De La Hoya and that was very important to me," he said. "Two of the best fighters of the era, De La Hoya and Trinidad, I have knockouts over both of them. You couldn't ask for a better script."

Bernard was good and fought to a well desrved win...

BUT

I have heard all this about him being an all timer before and this does further his case, yet like I said before I havent taken to him as a great and especially not to put him up there with the Marvellous one (my favourite ever boxer) and Sugar Ray Leonard etc. I have only seen a few Sugar Ray Robinson fights but my a dad was sure he was the best... Bernard is the best of his time though and that may be enough.

If he does the unthinkable and beats Roy (a definate great) then he will certainly write his name in the books.

@ V.DB : Mate Sugar Ray Leonard & Marvellous Marvin were more dan sumting special & even Thomas Hitman Hearns (he of glass jaw & worlds longest reach)..A Hopkins/Hagler match (if only)..

Eastman 2 take on Hopkins & do what exactly blkwonder..Eastman is ok like but dats it..

We now done know JJ's other man got beatdown again so you can rule out dat contest..
