The world cup finals is a tournament held every 4 years. It is the biggest thing in football and world sport. It consists of a group stage followed by a knockout competition. The final game to decide the winer is the world cup final.

There are over 180 footballing countries and not all of them can play in the tournament. I think only 32 do. So...

The world cup qualifiers are the games that countries have to play to get to the finals. This consists of a league which the top team (with the most points) qualifies from. The qualifiers generally begin about 2 years before the world cup.

The current qualifiers are to decide who gets to go to the world cup finals in Germany 2006.

The countries of the world are governed by regional bodies such as UEFA for Europe and CONCACAF for the Carribean. They have a random dip and allocate countries into groups. This is the league you must qualify from.

Once the teams that have won their groups and some others through other means (best runners up etc) have all been chosen, the countries are drawn out of a hat for the world cup finals groups. This is who they will play in the tournament itself.

The confusing thing is that the regional bodies hold annual or biannual tournaments themselves like the Copa America or African nations and the European Championships (every 4 years) all going on inbetween the world cup year and around the world cup qualifiers as well. It's the world cup that counts though. That is where everybody wants to be.

The Carling cup is not an international cup. It is a club competition more properly known as the league cup for the ninety something English clubs in the four professional football leagues. Carling is the name of the sponsor, it has had many sponsors and has been known as the Milk cup, Littlewoods cup, Rumblelows cup, Coca Cola cup and a few others in it's years. It is a secondary cup and takes lower precedence than the much bigger FA cup.

This includes ALL registered football teams in England. It has a special allure because theoretically your local youth club team or Pub team could end up playing a big premiership side. It won't happen though LOL but you can dream....

The Super Cup is another club competition between the winner of the UEFA cup and the Champions league from the previous year. It's not really important.

I made this thread a while back. It explains the competitions of football in England and Europe and the world for the benefit of Americans or martians LOL or just people who don't quite get it...

Enjoy
