Samuel Eto says "Yes", all they need do is believe?

Pele said in 1977 an African team would win by the turn of the century. He then extended that deadline to 2010. Was he speaking from his heart and not his mind though?

One thing needed to win is experience. Only one of the 5 African teams this year has ever reached the finals before-Tunsia.

Home advantage too is important, but South Africa in 2010 will be the first time Africa has hosted the event and they havent even qualified this time round. Nigeria who are strongest African contenders to win, apparentlyhave internal issues and are on the verge of being banned from international football because of a serious falling out between the head of the country's FA and its sports minister.

Then theres talent. Although a number of individual success stories eg Eto, Drogba, Essien etc, is there enough depth in Squad required to win a top level tournament?

So what are the realistic chances.?

my cousins and brother in law.....are big soccer fans...

they say that european countries raid the best and upcoming soccer talent.......depriving African countries of their most promising players....

also internal and often tribal politics and playing decisions cripple African teams' chances of winning the entire thing....

I don't know enough about soccer.....

BUT a team woul dhave to become a consistent contender before they had legit chance of winning the whole thing..

Nigeria can't be banned from international competition without the Italians being banned first. The country is reeling from dozens of corruption and match fixing scandals and all sorts at the moment.

Eto'o is funny to say that since Camersoon ain't even there LOL but yeah I do think an African team can win. We just need to stop the best players choosing to play for France and them...

**cough** I am usually very optimistic when it comes to African affairs, but i'll take a rain check on this one. First off they need to grow up and stop acting like modern day slaves who will die for money rather than country. Most of these players(not all) are a bunch of unpatriotic losers who dedicate themselves 101% when playing for their European teams, but when it comes to their country team, they just run around parading themselves like little American Beauty Queens.....just watch Nigerian players...lol..classic!

Instead of playing as a team, they are notorious for playing as individuals who lack self esteem therefore they need to prove something by just kicking a ball around 10 other players and will not pass even though they know by passing thatball the other player might have the chance of scoring!

Like with everything else in life, self belief and self esteem is PARAMOUNT to success.....since we are failing on too many things because of how low we think of ourselves, why would we think we'll succeed in winning the World Cup?confused3

Money is the order of the day.....and untill Africans start thinking out of the box of i "only care for my own belly" then forget them winning the damn Cup. Unpatriotic sissies:P:P:P

I think this goes for all the countries though. IC seem to play as a squad as did Senegal did the WC before. England never seems to play as a squad as everyone seems to go for glory instead of playing team ball.

I am still laughing at your dead on diagnosis of Nigeria. Still I have to wonder since France is made up of so many people who should be playing for African countries do they count as the first unofficial African team to win a WC title? LOL

Just because some other teams do it it doesn't make it ok for us to take it to another LEVEL! Most African teams are just plain USELESS...a bunch of babies in grown ass men's bodies who run around like characters in a racist cartoon proving what a buch of entertainment we are. Trust me, i watch them here in Europe, they have passion, drive and play great team players......oh they love it when whiteys praise them on what lovely little slaves they are for dying just to pass the ball to Shearer or Lampard. But when it comes to country..lol...forget it. And the ones who play for EU teams are notorious for looking down on their home based team mates, hence creating an atmosphere of envy an petty jealousy, which means by the time they hit the pitch, all 11 of them are just playing as individual as Mr Bean is in his comics.

And its good that you mentioned England, now imagine a team 2o times worse in their individuality attitude....why would anyone with a peas brain would want to emulate that?confused3

I admitt that every decade or so we bring out a team thats good, like Senegal....then just like that, it all goes down hill once the international teams poch them....and once they become big, well again look at what became of Nigeria and Cameroon....give an African a little success, and they will find a way to just end their glory before they can even fulfill a fith of their worth! Its an ambarrasing joke:X

Hi I'm new on the forum and got really interested in this debate. Call me silly but i strongly believe that the worldcup will remain in Africa in 2010 when it goes there.

An African country is gonna win then. clp)

I know they've been selfish and individualist after but trust me the humiliation and embarassment felt by the so called "big" African teams like Cameroon, Nigeria, Senegaland Egypt in being knocked out of the world cup qualifications so unceremoniously will be a wake up call to them. The black man hates humiliation and this pride might just be a good thing for African football. I am hopeful anyway.
