Jamie Carragher has publicly backed Rafael Benitez to end Liverpool's agonizing wait to win their first league title since 1990.

The centre-back believes only Chelsea can match the Reds' record over the past two-and-a-half-seasons – and that's with far superior spending power.

"Of course I think he can do it. He's a proven title winner because of what he did with Valencia where he beat Real Madrid and Barcelona twice," said Carra.

"That's quite similar to here with Manchester United and Chelsea, who are above us at the moment. Hopefully we can bring some players in during the summer and we can change that and take it to the next level.

"Rafa is the man to do that and you only have to look at the job he's done in two-and-a-half years - he's won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the European Super Cup and the Community Shield.

"If you look at what he's done since he's been here, Chelsea are the only club who can compare - and they've had more financial backing than us. Since he's been here, he's probably done better than any other manager in the league.

"Everyone is desperate to win the league. I'm like the fans and I'm desperate to win it. It's the last thing I need to tick off in my career. I won't be happy until we've done that."

The vice-captain admits he is disappointed not to be closer to the top two going into Christmas.

He said: "At the moment we have to be looking at third place and we can't really be thinking about the other two now. We have to make sure we get that third place and close the gap on the top two.

"But I wanted a little bit more out of the season than to just finish third and I'm a bit disappointed.

"I thought at the beginning of the season - like a lot of fans I spoke to in the street - that we might get a bit closer. I thought we might give the top two more of a run for their money.

"But you look at the consistency of Manchester United and Chelsea and they only lose two or three games. That's what champions do."

Ive changed my mind and not given up on this season yet. Miracles do happen and mathematically its more than possible.

Im relying on the"its a funny old game" thing.

3 more points are guarenteed tomorrow as Watford are wasting their time turning up.

Maaan! Why is it everytime we go a goal down, we crumble under pressure? I had a bad feeling about this game, because after blackburn's thrashing at the weekend, i knew they had a point to prove.

This is why we wont win the league this season. We play football at top quality but we lack that INTENSITY and EDGE! Look at the chelsea vs arsenal game. When chelsea went a goal down (with only 15 minutes left) they turned up the tempo and played with pace, intensity and skill. Then got a result out of it. That was top quality football at its highest. And we seem to lack that edge. We had it in our Champions League winning campaign but havent seemed to be able to divert that level of football to the league. The enigma that is LFC!

tobitrice - man I wouldn't be surprised if Blackburn trimmed down the dimensions of the width and height of their goal posts to secure that win - you can't get that close without scoring...I smell a rat and I'll be investigating

their politicians could never rent me, but the babylon daughter still got my pikney!

Nah man! That seems to happen every time we dont get a result. And rafa tries to keep the press and the fans ignorant by stating 'we created enough chances to win'.

The vultures are coming soon. So lets hope this aint going to be repeated for the barca tie.

Its only the fa cup anyway, arsenal wanted it more than us since we won it last year and its arsenal's best chance of winning any silverware this year.

Our back four(full backs especially), Gerrard and the goalie need to be lined up and shot for todays performance

PuSSys - all of them - 5 players round Rosicky (for the 2nd goal), and no one bothers to put in a tackle!!

Last season, we had the strongest defence in the league, broken all sorts of records - This season, we've turned into a bunch of sissy boys... WHY RAFA WHY??????

And WHY play Dudek in a BIG game like Arsenal when he hasnt played for FCKIN MONTHS???? He made Alumunia look like CASILLAS!!

This shit cant go on - Not at HOME!! Its bad enough AWAY from home!!

Rant over - Im off to sleep!!

PS: WTF Was Carragher trying to do - why not just put the ball out of play?????

PS2: Well done Arsenal
