Styles apologises to Benitez
OLIVER BROWN
Referee Rob Styles was forced into a humiliating public climb-down on Monday as he apologised to Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez for wrongly awarding Chelsea a penalty at Anfield on Sunday.
Styles judged that Steve Finnan had fouled Florent Malouda in the 62nd minute of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but while television replays showed there had been no illegal contact, Frank Lampard equalised from the resulting penalty.
Conceding the gravity of his error, Styles said: “In mistakenly awarding a penalty, I accept that I may have affected the result of the match and for that I apologise.”
Although he had shown no such contrition immediately after the game, the unsympathetic response of referees’ chief Keith Hackett led Styles to try to appease Benitez.
Hackett explained: “I have spoken to Rob, he has looked at the video, and obviously he is extremely disappointed. He has admitted he got it wrong. It is wrong, and therefore Rob will not be officiating this weekend.”
The Premier League also removed Ian Gosling, who incorrectly ruled out David Healy’s equaliser for Fulham against Middlesbrough on Saturday when the ball had clearly crossed the line.

Dude Styles has done nothing to you guys. You have 13 points you should take, factoring in a tie with Portsmouth and wins over the others. That alone should catapult you guys to the top. Chelsea is too injured at the back to be consistent.

SB, Chelsea have won the Premiership twice, we have never won it. Do you know how painful it is even just to say this? We cant be losing out on 2 points because of a dumb referee who afterwards saids hes sorry, like it somehow makes amends.

Yeah man we're looking BAD.......Finally the real title challenge is on this season, and we look like we've got plenty of goals from all angles, plus capable of not losing or drawing against silly teams.
You know this fantasy football has got me all screwed up. Because Torres is not in my team, today i found myself saying, "alright son one goal's enough".............lol

Disappointed with yesterdays performance.
We didnt even deserve a point.
No sense of urgency to keep our place at the top of the table.
I'd have expected us to go gung-ho and try to get maximum points - make Portsmouth hang on
Rafa has fcked up on this one - its plain common sense to play your strongest team for a tough away fixture - plain common sense.
Saying that, theres plenty of positives to be taken from this -
1) we never look like conceeding from open play.
2) we're still unbeaten
3) Chelsea dropped 2 more points
4) We play Birmingham next week while Chelsea play united. a draw between the two would be a perfect scenario for us. I expect us to beat Birmingam at home and be further ahead
5) We got a game in hand

Porto display :A well earnt point perhaps. We didnt play that well, away from home, and could have won the game. Other than their goal they never really looked like breaking us down.
Yup totally poor display against Pompey. IMO This season the League will be won or lost on our away form. They are precisely the tests we have to win more often. Its vital we solve this problem which has been there since the Roy Evans era..

That performance was a joke. it was like we couldnt string more that 3 passes together. show some coposure on the ball! Pompey was a joke as well.
But to be honest im not too fussed about our champions league run this season. Its the league that im interested in. And performances like away to pompey are the kind of performaces that wont help win us the league. We need to stop playing too many aimless long balls. We were looking sharp before the international break, let's hope we get our sharpness back quickly. and where are all these penalties against us coming from?
On a positive note we are still unbeaten.

My patience is running thin with bloody Benetiz and his fugging rotation bollacks. Spends £30 million on Torres, who looks prolific, then leaves him on the god damm bench. He needs to realise that there are few joke business teams in the premership now. Just fugging play the best team you eeeediat.

Hmmm the problem i suggest is not your rotation system, or that Torres did not play, it is simply that your squad is still not good enough period!! Torres cannot realistically play in every single match... Therefore it makes sense that against teams like Brum, you should play your alternates.. the problem is that they can't score for shit...
Yesterday Arsenal were without Eboue, Hleb, Rosicky, Van persie, Lehman and Gilberto, yet we WON 5-0... Van persie is our main man and WE won..if you 're serious title contenders then your squad has to perform... the fact is Liverpool clearly aint contenders...
