Dream on! We are too skint for those players. It has been going on for years! Liverpool fc sit back and watch while all the other big clubs snatch up the world class players. What kind of 'big' club does that? Just watch. I am a little vexed right now because of the present situation in the tranfer market. Chelsea pay 30 million for schev. And what is our response? 6 million for Bellamy. Plus we might miss out on dirk kuyt coz we cant stretchour bid by 2 million. (Signs of needfor new investor). I will support and get behind every player that wears a red shirt but dont get me all excited about winning the league next season.

Liverpool arent skint far from it, they just havent got throw away money like Chelski who pay inflated prices for players without a second thought about profitability.

Rafael Benitez was celebrating today after Chilean international Mark Gonzalez was given the green light to begin his Liverpool career.

The left winger was granted a work permit after a successful hearing on Wednesday morning, and Benitez believes Gonzalez is a player who will not only enhance his team but also excite the supporters.

"This is very good news for us and I am absolutely delighted to welcome Mark Gonzalez to Liverpool as he is a player the supporters will like to see," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Mark is an exciting left winger who can cross good balls and beat defenders and he is a very good signing for us. He has a very good mentality as when I was talking with him he told me, 'I want to play for Liverpool'."

Gonzalez spent last season on loan in La Liga with Real Sociedad after he was initially refused a work permit to join Liverpool from Spanish side Albacete.

Ok we didnt get Eto or Torrres, but we got Craig Bellamy and 3 South American players, Chiliean Mark Gonzalez, Brazilian Fabio Aurelio and Argentinian Gabriel Paletta.

Fabio Aurelio: Left-back has also completed his move to Anfield on a free transfer from Valencia

Premierships definately ours this season.......

What is it with rafa and his obsession with defenders? In January we landed kromkamp, agger, paletta and link with aurelio was around, when all the while we were screaming for a striker and RW (dont include robbie). Yet still there is some talk about some trabelsi guy.

Bellamy, good striker maybe, but cant match schev.

Gonzalez, good signing, but we aint got too much trouble on the leftsince (a healthy) Harry Kewell can tear it up.

Alves would be ok. Would rather see joaquin but links with joaqin were denied today. Shame. We still need one more striker andmaybe if it will be kuyt but cant be too sure. Still wondering.

Bellamy is a good striker, but also has baggage. If we were to sign pennant then we would look like a thug rehab. Pennant can cross the ball well apparently and would be a cheaper option. Not very exciting to watch but still useful. Havent seen aurelio to give a verdict. Havent seen palettaor enough of agger either.Gonzalez looked real promisng when playing for real sociedad. All i want is one more striker and one right winger so we will be set to challenge with a fully depth squad.

Overhaul chelsea is a possibility. But dont get over excited.

I got faith in Benitez, hes trying to build, with a depth of squad, on the cheap. Except Chelsea ,football clubs have realised that the books no longer balance themselves with players salaries etc vs revenues. They've got to. Look at Fulham who last season lost a premiership record of £23million, just cant happen. Its all about shrewd buying now with mangerial skills to develop players. Beneitez, Alex Fergerson and Arsene Wenger are the best in the World at it, more so Wenger i would say. Look how many unknowns he's bought and developed into top class players.
Quote:
All said i agree we do need to break the bank for 1 possibly 2 world class strikers. Its not easy though. Everyone wants a top striker and that means prices get inflated, then the likes of Chelsea/R.Madrid/Barcelona/Milan and Man Uwin the bidding..., end of. Ruud Van Nisleroy is apparently unsettled, would be perfect, but Man U selling to Liverpool is a rare occurance.
Quote:
Not sure about Harry Kewell, hes just not the player he was at Leeds anymore and doesnt look capable of reserecting that sort of form again. I think hes got a confidence problem, can see it in his face. He got marginally better last season, but id sell him whilst hes got a saleable value.
Quote:
Im sure these 3 new boys will be good though, they're South American, 1 Brazilian and 1 Argentinian....say no more.

BEFORE this season gets underway, footballers of 21 different nationalities have represented Liverpool Football Club.

But Fabio Aurelio Rodrigues will be the first from Brazil.

And happily for Liverpool fans, he is keen to live up to the stereotype.

A set-piece expert, a gifted ball-player and possessor of an attacking mentality, the Reds' newsigning from Valencia was unveiled to the media at Melwood yesterday.

And he declared: "Yes, I think you could describe me as a typical Brazilian footballer.

"I like to think I possess a lot of technical skill on the ball, but you also have to bear in mind that I spent six years in Spain and that's obviously helped me adjust my game to a more European style of play.

"I think you need both these qualities in the English league, where you must have the capacity to get in and fight when necessary."

Those six seasons at The Mestalla have given Aurelio a cosmopolitan outlook to his football, and as a result he feels comfortable about making the switch from Spain to the Premiership.

"I don't think it's going to be a shock to the system because I've had the opportunity to see alot of Premier League games on the television," he added.

"Whenever a new player comes from abroad to the Premiership he has to adjust his ownstyle of play and then hopefully stamp his own authority on the game.

"That's what I will try to do."

Aurelio is already setting his sights high. A member of Rafael Benitez's successful La Liga winning line-up at Valencia, he instantly targeted a repeat performance in England as his priority.

"Obviously I have to look at things from a club perspective rather than personally, and we have alot to live up to having wonthe Champions League last year," he went on.

"But I think the main objective is that we would like to win the Premiership. It'sa long and difficult season we have to get to grips with, but that would be my main objective at Liverpool."

A left-back or left winger, Aurelio has been held back at international level by the long-term reign of Roberto Carlos in that role.

But with the Brazilian legend coming to the end of his international career, Aurelio hopes to finally forge a career for his country.

"I think you could best describe me as maybe a left wing-back, getting forward. But I can play many positions. One is left wing and the other is left-back," he said.

"First and foremost I want to get in to the Liverpool side and establish myself as a first team regular there.

"But obviously then, following on from that, I would like to get into the Brazilian national team and hopefully make that position my own."

Boss Benitez agrees. "If he has no problems with injuries, I think he will be a very good player for us down the left hand side," he warned.

The note of caution comes from Aurelio's experience at Valencia, where he suffered a broken legat the start of the 2001/02 season.

Further minor injuries - as well as lack of faith from the managers who followed Benitez on Valencia's bench - hampered his chances to establish himself in subsequent seasons with a number of appearances coming on the left of midfield rather than the left-back position he prefers.

Despite all this, he remained a sought after talent and Real Madrid, Villareal and Manchester United were all reported to be interested before he opted to join Liverpool.

He will offer not only ahigh quality alternative to John Arne Riise at An-field, but he will also offer Benitez a greatsupply line from the left flank to complement Peter Crouch's aerial threat.

With either Harry Kewell or Mark Gonzalez playing ahead of him, it is easy to envisage the wingers cutting inside and Aurelio moving forwardto exploit the space created.

"Fabio's a player with a lot of quality," added Benitez.

"Technically he is fantastic. He is also really good on set pieces. He is another player who can give us different things."

YES! Finally some decent cover at left back with some brazillian skills (apparently)!

Riise has been good for us but i do really get tired of his hoofing tactics. He hoofs the ball when under the slightest bit of pressure, and since rafa has put him at left back, we dont see as many of his rockets fire into the back of the net. He has some skill but only dsplays it from time to time, and worst of all he has traore and warnock for cover. Boy im glad thats over! Bring on the new right winger!

Looks like Pennant is on his way to Liverpool!! Deal is almost done for £6.5m

Now all we need is a proven clinical striker and the league is in the bagsmoking-devil

There are rumours Anelka might return(weird i know) but imagine if that happens - we would have

Anelka, Pennant, Bellamy and Fowler - f'ckin war zone

Where is the source for jermaine pennant? Wouldn't mind him at liverpool. If alves was as good as rafa made him out to be then i would prefer him but seville are pushing it. But then again they are a successful club at squeezing buyers in transfers with their over inflated prices. Ramos 19 million for example. Stay away from seville.

Cant think of anyone else for an alternative other than pennant.Another striker is a must. Cant think of any suggestions tho.

Simao or Alves will cost us double the amount we spent on Jermaine Pennant

Jermaine Pennant is proven in the premiership - the same cannot be said for Alves or Simao

Good signing i think!!

This is a modern day squad with a very European feel to it. You can almost feel the confidence coming from Anfield right now.
Quote:
Whats evident is we've got a better depth of squad now. Theres more quality who can replace more positions allowing for injuries.
Quote:
The team has lots of different options as well. Gerrad was last season playing on the right, you would'nt want to leave out Sissoko. Pennant/Gonalez gives you width and pace. Upfront Bellamay, Crouch, Fowler, Garcia all know where the net is. Crouch can do the lone thing. Bellamy has to become prolific for us to win the Premiership imo.

Looking good got faith in Benitez.
