Ronaldo outburst leaves Ferguson with work to do

Sir Alex Ferguson will head to South Africa this week with Manchester United's rebuilding plans in chaos and his face still ringing from the slap Cristiano Ronaldo so publicly delivered in Stuttgart on Saturday night.

Just hours after Ferguson confidently predicted he would be able to ease the tensions created by Ronaldo's controversial exploits at the World Cup, the 21-year-old exited the tournament restating his desire to quit Old Trafford, scalding his manager and chief executive David Gill in the process.

'My agent will meet with the Manchester United chief executive (David Gill),' said Ronaldo. 'I've said in the past that my desire is to play in Spain.

'Will it be Real Madrid or Barcelona? They are two clubs I like and it will be one of them. For some time I haven't had any support from my chief executive or my coach (Sir Alex Ferguson). They should have come out in my defence but no-one did.

'I am calm, I know I have done a good job and I've grown a lot in this World Cup, from a physical point of view and a mental one. In the next few seasons I will be even better.'

While few United fans would condemn Ronaldo for his part in England's downfall, in outlining his desire to leave Old Trafford, the former Sporting Lisbon star has crossed the line of loyalty and acceptability.

Considering Rio Ferdinand was booed by his own supporters last summer just for failing to sign a contract extension, a negative reception for Ronaldo is now guaranteed at Old Trafford along with every other Premiership ground in the country.

For Ferguson, it represents a nightmare scenario.

Having thrown a protective arm around Ronaldo since he moved to England as a raw teenager in 2003, guiding him through the trauma induced by the death of his father last summer, plus the unfounded rape allegations which followed a couple of months later, Ferguson has seen his kindness rejected in the most forceful manner imaginable.

Not only that, after emerging periodically from Chelsea's slipstream over the past two seasons to declare his was a team in creation, Ferguson now knows one of its central components is almost certain to start the new campaign elsewhere.

For, with talks planned between Gill and Ronaldo's agent later this week, it is difficult to see how the winger can be persuaded to stay at Old Trafford despite Ferguson's previous optimism.

'Throughout my time as a manager you are confronted with hurdles,' Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday.

'There have been many that I have crossed in the past and there will be more I will cross in the future.'

However, on this occasion, peace between United and Ronaldo would appear to be a bridge too far.

The best hope is for Real Madrid and Barcelona to make a bid quickly, pocket the cash - possibly around £20million - and allow Ferguson as much time as possible to try to rescue what is turning into a disastrous summer.

For, not only has Ronaldo's departure to be sealed, so the last rites on Ruud van Nistelrooy's Red Devils career have still to be administered.

Talks Van Nistelrooy demanded a fortnight ago in the wake of Holland's World Cup elimination are believed to be imminent, possibly early this week as Ferguson is due to depart for South Africa on Wednesday, 24 hours before the remainder of his squad.

Given the massive falling out between Van Nistelrooy and his manager at the end of last season, it seems impossible to believe the Dutchman will stay either.

The loss of two key men is hardly the backdrop Ferguson would have chosen to start United's pre-season campaign, particularly as his efforts to bring in new recruits this summer have so far yielded no reward.

That is set to change, with West Brom goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak reportedly ready to join the Red Devils as Edwin van der Sar's understudy, while the much-touted transfer of Michael Carrick from Tottenham could also be sealed.

Those deals alone will not be enough to pacify a United support getting increasingly twitchy at the chances of their side competing with Chelsea, who have brought in Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko already this summer, with the prospect of a few more before the new campaign gets under way on August 19.

Ronaldo is a good player especially good in finals unfortunately we haven’t been able to test this out in a European final. If he wants to go we should get take the money quickly, clear Ruud out as well and use it build the squad up. No guarantee any of that money would go on players thou, don’t know what glazers have in mind. Now is the time for Kieran Richardson to step up and hold down a midfield role or else we could ship off to WestBrom. The papers are talking about Andrea Pirlo, Gattuso and Hargreaves I’m not convinced any of them are the right players for Man U.

Here’s a list of the players “linked with Man U

Stephen Appiah Fenerbahce Midfielder £7m I wish! but it won't happen because he wants to go to Arsenal

Owen Hargreaves Bayern Munich Midfielder Not stated BM just sold Ballack so they won't let Hargreaves leave. He would be good though, what we need.

Maxim Kalinichenko Spartak Moscow Winger £5m Not bad but not amazing

Simao Sabrosa Benfica Winger £14m Not very likely

Juan Roman Riquelme Villarreal Midfielder Not stated Impossible! Pie in the sky type nonsense

Franck Ribery Marseille Winger Not stated His club already said no and we dropped it

Freddy Adu DC United Midfielder £5mMan... I hope not!

Armando Petit Benfica Midfielder £4m A good idea, would definately work

Giles Barnes Derby County Midfielder £2m NO NO NO NO!!Please no

Michael Carrick Tottenham Midfielder Not stated Looks inevitable nowand for that I am depressed. He isn't good enough.

Losing Ronaldo is the fault of the English media soley and it's completely deliberate. The hate for united is incredible. They wanted to unsettle and scare him off. It's such bollocks. I don't mind losing Van Nistelrooy since he's old now but losing Christiano Ronaldo is absolutely tragic for United. He is one of our best players by far.

Dm as a spurs fan would i be sorry to see carrick go HELL NO!!!!! I've been to a lot of home games this season and i have to sayI think he is overated. A good passer when he has time on the ball but put him under pressue and watch him fade.

So if Utd do actually buy Carrick you will be making this spurs fan and many others very happy. Your money will be better spent elsewhere. Let's hope Sir Alex doesnt come to his senses, lol.

Yeah the english press and Ronaldo - *******s especailly Shearer wanting Rooney to "stick one on him in training" felt like elbowing the tv. I don't hink Carrick is a good idea either. I was thinking Alou diarra who doesn't want to go back to Liverpool but probably wouldn't get sold to Man U. Perhaps Tim Borowski, maybe it's time to throw some youngesters in, whatever happened to Floribert Ngalula?

Alou diarra

Tim Borowski

Floribert Ngalula

@ Newstyle

I think you meant Mahamadou Diarra of Lyon

We made a bid for the Malian but it was rejected. He's far superior to Alou Diarra of France believe me. But Lyon won't be selling.

Anyway Liverpool and Man Utd have not sold a player to each other in 42 years! We REALLY don't each other

Your situation is getting increasingly desperate. Your trasnfer season has been even worse than liverpool's and its not like man u went all out last summer. What's up?

You guys need twocentral defenders (scholes is still good but getting old andsmith is not a natural midfielder), and a new striker (losing a top scorer would be a huge blow to any club). You guys need to break the bank, you are supposed to be minted after all.Carrick is a good player but my advice is dont pay more than 15 millionbecuase manu are already beingripped off at that price.

Plus he would not fit in, in the EPL which moves wayyyy to fast for him.

If United pulled this off they would instantly be solidified for the #2 spot. Behind Maka I would have to say he is the #2DM in the world....

Stephen Appiah Fenerbahce Midfielder £7m I wish! but it won't happen because he wants to go to Arsenal I don't think he fits in with you or us

Owen Hargreaves Bayern Munich Midfielder Not stated BM just sold Ballack so they won't let Hargreaves leave. He would be good though, what we need.

Again I agree

Maxim Kalinichenko Spartak Moscow Winger £5m Not bad but not amazing A wasteof money

Simao Sabrosa Benfica Winger £14m Not very likely but would be a good replacement for Ronaldo

Juan Roman Riquelme Villarreal Midfielder Not stated Impossible! Pie in the sky type nonsense I don't think you would want him, EPL moves to fast for him llke it did forVeron. Both have great vision but the nonstop unnecessary runningin the EPL would completely disrupt his game....

Franck Ribery Marseille Winger Not stated His club already said no and we dropped it yeah I don't see that happening

Freddy Adu DC United Midfielder £5mMan... I hope not! I wishMan U would to help out DC United LOL We want err need I mean it would be a nice profit for us....Can he play you ask???? How about this nice view of the waterfront.....

Armando Petit Benfica Midfielder £4m A good idea, would definately workcoin flip.....

Giles Barnes Derby County Midfielder £2m NO NO NO NO!!Please no

Michael Carrick Tottenham Midfielder Not stated Looks inevitable nowand for that I am depressed. He isn't good enough. Although he will continue to run onto goal if the other teams players godown to get you guys a needed goal LOL

Honestly man you guys NEED RVN for his finishing alone. He scored the most goals on your squad and did not even play much of the last half of the season. I don't care how much you like him or hate him the man is an out an out finisher nothing pretty a lot but he finishes. Rooney and Ronaldo have a lot of great ball flicks and entertaining value but scoring the goal needed to beat teams like West Brom Norwich or Bolton in games you have to grind it out, he always came through. Seems like SAF would see through his own ego. Saha is good but Saha is fragile......

I have been trying to figure out why he is so applauded? I thought that I was the only one that was not see what Fletcher was bringing to the table. He just looks like a hyped up journeyman. Park is the only person as of late that looks like he belongs at that club bought recently.
Quote:
I think SAF is secretly looking at someone and will just swoop in and get him before Chelsea just throw boat loads of cash at the player. I think Man United should actually look to steal Vieira or Emerson because Juventus will be punished soon and I am sure players are going to want out. Even if they can get Nedved for a year I think you could make a serious run with some Juventus players. maybe even trez to sit in RVNs spot up top.

Emerson is terrible! If you think the Premier league is too fast for Riquelme (I agree) then it's WAAAAAAAAAY to fast for Emerson. He was good a few years back at Roma but is way beyond the sell by date now.

We will probably have to wait to see what happens with the Juventus situation to see what we get. BTW Vieira will NEVER play for United, he just wouldn't do it. I think he would rather put his tail between his legs and scurry back to Arsenal than do that.

What I'd like to see, realistic or not
Jermaine Pennant
Simao
Marcos Senna
Reuben Baraja
Stephen Appiah
Owen Hargreaves
Miguel
Wright-Phillips
Maniche

Duscher
Valeron
