Talking EPL may extend season and play some regular season matches abroad - 07-02-08, 05:15 PM

BBC SPORT | Football | Premier League | Top clubs consider overseas games

Knew this was in the works. The NFL has opened the floodgates.

I can see Arsenal/ManU in Los Angeles or Toronto

Reaction from supporters groups in the UK (so far) is definitely against - and must admit, don't think I'd be feeling a north London derby played in North Carolina (nothing against NC, just an illustration). Will make what is already a remote experience for the majority of British fans even more so.

In the end money talks, so a way will be found for it to happen - there is already a global demand for the Prem, so can see the commercial logic.

We felt the same away about you guys watching NYG and the Dolphins but you guys showed up LOL

I think the same would happen here. We have a larger fan base than you would know. I am in Memphis and you would not BELIEVE how many damned Tottenham fans are here. Everytime I put on one of my Arsenal shirts I will be damned if some Spurs fans comes up to me taunting me of their impending greatness LOL

Agree,

The premier league were looking at the regular season Miami v New York NFL game & saw the success in terms of people registering interest in tickets & how quickly the tickets sold for the game at Wembley in October '07. I reckon if this goes through they'll play the games in the Far East where the 'big 4' are popular. Not sure about the USA.

I told Watcher several years ago when US billioniares started buying EPL teams this would happen.

I think this will happen and evetually you'll see MLS/EPL matches .......in the UK.Also you'll see an EPL "All-Star" game.

I'd guess that the Far East will be as big a market for the Prem - Murdoch already has plenty of TV interests out there, and you know he in for a big slice of the action. May also mean that we'll get to see a lot more of South American teams over here, which would be no bad thing.

Lot of complicated stuff to work out before this happens on a large scale - for one, if the extra game makes a potential difference between a team being relegated or not, people will wanna know how the fixtures are going to be worked out. That should be very interesting.

The other factor is the likely emergence of a European Super League - seems to me there would be very little to stop it if the Prem goes global in the way suggested. Where they lead, others will follow - or those who can.

What all this means for the traditional concept of supporting a team; the development of English players at the highest level; the future for clubs outside the Prem; and the overall balance of power in the world game......who knows? More to the point, who cares - if it's all about the money......
