would like to hearabout the experiences of black men who are attending University and those who are applying to university through UCAS.

Have you attended any presentations and do you feel you were taken seriously?

have you experienced racism at any point of in the process of academic study from tutors/ lecturers?

I am interested in hearing how black males arecoping throughout the process of their studies and how they are dealing with problems that arise.

The reason why I am so interested as I recently experienced some very negative treatment as a mature studentdue to being labeled and want to hear from otherblack men and their experiences in academic study.

When you atten certain institutions you have to expect racism, as I was even told by one of my secondary school teachers before I went off to university, that's just how it is and will be as we are a minority in this country.

I never had that problem at Nottingham University. I wouldthinkmostuniversitiesin the Midlands certainly in the East Midlands wouldn't have too much of a problem with racism..

I never really interacted with the tutors so I wouldn't really know what they thought of me, I just did my work and left it with them, they seemed ok to me though.

I understand you greyman but I am intrested to find out to what degree black males are experiencing racism atacademic level. Its not somthing I accept and although I took apropriate action in my particular case and got a result I am concerned that there may be students going through it and feel just because institutional racism exists that we black men have to accept it.

oh by the way thanks for the link to the videos clp)I was quite suprised how clear and smooth they played as even on broadband I still experience choppy video feeds on some music sites thanks for sharing brah niceone.gif

I was at Newcastle and I've never had any problems - certainly nothing institutional. I was/am a mature student (well 22!) and my tutors are excellent, and Newcastle isn't really reknown for being a 'black' city. There was one guy who really didn't see eye to eye with me and tried to screw me over constantly but I think that was just because we rubbed each other the wrong way, nothing I think to do with him being prejudiced.

Thing is Universitites are focused on attracting international students due to bigger fees, quotas, etc, they do their best to attract and retain a mix of students. If anything home/white students complain of foreign students getting all the breaks.

Amongst my mates and family, the ones who have struggled the most are like my cousinswho weretotally used to going to a predominantly black school, living in a 'black area', only having black friends (well mostly), etc. struggled to fit into the diverse student body at Uni, not because of racisism but because they felt as if they didn't belong, or weren't welcome. We can be so paranoid at times!

Don't think you'll really experience racisism but *ignorance* -remember you'll meet a lot of people who have led very sheltered lives and haven'treally known orfraternized with black people before. Which is why you need to see yourself as an ambassador for black people(wherever you go not just uni), because for a lot of people who meet you at uni & elsewherewill form lasting opinions (rightly or wrongly) about what black people are likebased on your behaviour.

Of course you will always get the occassional bigot that slips through the net and somehow obtains enough power to make your life a misery, but thats life I guess.

A Posse Ad Esse; thats all you need.

I went to Manchester Met never had any problems really although when you caught the bus on the way to uni or back people did'nt want sit next to you the same was for all my friends as Mancheter had a problem with gangs they would think you were one of them. Got some friends who went to the university of Manchester and she saidshe would have problems where no one would want to sit next to her in the lecture theatre and that when she entered the lecture the theatre people would laugh at her and people would laugh at her in the hall ways. She said she would go home crying and didn't want to go to lecures causing her to have bad grades she also began to loose her self esteem. She was a foreign student from the seychelles, as a male people would probablyhave been too scared to do it to me or the probably would have done. Their mission is to stop black people from achieving because the best place to stop a black person is in the universities.

Saying that I did my maseters in London at the university of Westminster in Harrow where I feel I got attacked by own black people. They saw me as different because i spoke with accent that was North of Watford.I grew up in a town that was full of white people so Ihad to be tough and walk liketen men. when black people saw this in London they saw it as threat and when i would walk past people they would look me up and down. Another thing is that in my town if you see another black person you say hello i's a mark of respect as there are few of that was the way i was cultured, when I was in London I used to say hello to everyone they thought I was crazy I heard I don't know you. This is because there are so many black people in london and instead of sticking together they often fight amongst each other so I quickly recognised something "culture" and adopting to it doing the wrong thing in a alien culure can cause confliuct you have to quickly adjust, thats my message for new students.

Niccolo,

It's funny that you brought the thing up about your cousins. You said that they had the hardest time trying to adjust to a majority White University. My brother and I was raised in a racially mixed environment. I just graduated for a majority white university and my brother ( he doesn't have his degree yet) went to Morehouse College. My experiences at my university was great. On a personal level, I didn't experience the out right racism that some other have faced on some White Universities, though My mind was always open to it. My brother believe it or not HATED his majority Black school. He didn't hate it because it was al black as some people may think. His proble with Morhouse? He said he hated the hypocrisy that took place in that school.

For example(s) before they began to revitalize sections of the West End ( where More is located)they used to have housing project in many of these places around Morehouse and the rest of the AU center. He claimed that some of these guys would constanly put these guys down because of it without knowing who they are. One Morehouse student, he said, was beaten up by one of the people from the projects because of his constant put down about their residence. Basically, he said that when it came to Spike Lee and that picture he made( Do the Right thing). he bascially described Morehouse in that manner-- the inner conflicts, not so much of color as it was with elitism.I thought that my brother was joking about it, but he wasn't. In 1987, the was a controversy about the school because of what one person had printed about all of the schools in the AUCenter and itstated" My Wife comes from Spelman, My girlfriend went to Clark-Atlanta and my Ho went toMorris Brown". As an African-American woman that offended me as well as many other Black people who attended those schools. If thatwas somebody who did that at a majority White Universityhe would have been cursed for such words.

If you go to the AU Center you hear the words of people expressing their pride of who they are and why they came there. I have no problem with that and I certainly will not blame every student for the actions of afew/ Intially I wanted to go to Spelman, but I didn't go there for the followong reasons 1) Too much money, it was far more than the White University I went to 2) I prefer co-ed schools 3) Some, not all, of them has some serious attitude problems that need adjusting. Many Black people send their kids to schools like Morehouse College, Spelman etc for their kids to get a top notch education and moreso to learn more about themselves. I'm not going to dis those schools in terms of learning more about themselves and their history because it's great, but if you're going to those schools and experince the same kind elitism./divisions there ,we may as well sendf out kids to the White ones. At least if you experience it there, it will come as no suprise to you and you will know why. Don't get us wrong if it wasn't for schools like that , we would be going to school today, but those division got to go. We as Black people should be prejudieced among ourselves when some of us is tryng to better ourselves in our own learning institutions.
