Marketing degree

I just wondered if anyone has done a marketing degree, or knows anyone who has?

As a course do you think it is worthwhile to have or unnecessary? Or does it depend on the skills of the individual...?

I took a business studies and marketing degree and found both to very beneficial if you want to start your own business or be involved in marketing. In marketing they also like the classics such as English and History if you don't have marketing. You can also take a Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) proffessional course once you have completed your degree but I think they have a 2.1 minimum and its not 100% necessary to have this to get into the marketing industry. As things go, I believe that any degree is useful and respected by employers so long as you go to at least a half decent university and have a 2.1 minimum. In addition I know my boss has no time for the new waste of timedegrees such as DavidBeckham and Madonna studies (which decent universities wouldn't have courses in anyway).

it helps i believe, but more than a degree, they also need someone with common sense able to make good judgements... alas which certain ppl with degrees dont posess... *looking atone now sitting near me* mad-moonie

my friend did a sandwich degree(4yrs, one of which was spent working in industry) marketing and business studies she now works for a big company and is also doing a chartered masters thing extra professional qualifications..........she rates it. my media degree can get me into marketing just trying step in da door

I would suggest while you are going through school tryintern at business that requires your course of study. That way you have the minimu education requirements and also some hard tangile work experince.

This the thing I have marketing and business experience... was in management age of 21 and did that for about 5 years... and ran a small business along my main job at 22... I was meant to do the MBA in 2003... but it was not feasible at the time...

the only reason why I am thinking about it is that I have a business plan that I would like to put into action... and I was wondering if in order to deepen my expertise before I take the plunge...

whether I should go for a degree or not... given me a lot of food for thought though...

If you are European, it probably does not matter what qualification you possess, or even whether you possess any qualifications at all, you will get job that you want (particularly if you are in London and are a European from Australia, New Zealand or South Africa).

An MBA in Marketing from a credible business school would probably do harm, but as previously advised by someone else, the Chartered Institute of Marketing are probably best advised to assist you.

Note that a number of leading Jewish businessmen such as Alan Sugar and Philip Green possess no formal qualifications whatsoever. They have managed to become multi-millionaires however.

To be honest I don't think u need an actual degree to deepen expertise in marketing...it's not that deep...a lot of theoretical frameworks u are working with...you can read up on things like that...

Personally I don't really think it is a subject that needs to be taught...but learnt through experience of business andwhat actually works for you...

Especially if u not looking as an 18 year old to come out of your degree into a certain industry...with your experience and course of action i.e business plan...i think u can do the relative reading in your free time (pun intended)

But then being in an actual class environment can motivate u to learn material faster and absorb it more efficiently than otherwise...so as"our graham" would say"the choice is yours...."

I tell you what....

I don't know about England but here in America I know a shit load of people with degrees...Marketing, Business, and other wise...and either don't have their own business, don't have a job in that field, or just don't have a job period.

But I know a lot of Arabs and Koreans who barely finished an education equivilant to High-school, but have SHARP business skills and know how to market and advertise instinctively....and make a lot of money.

I believe it has more to do with the individual, and their skills in operating a business and knowing what people want and how they think.

Most of these immigrants who own successful businesses didn't spend one dime on a degree or any other type of education, they simply worked under their parents or other family memebers and learned step by step hands-on.

My advice is to save your money, apply for as many loans as possible and work the system to get yourself a business.
Don't waste money and time chasing after something you don't even need.

i would say do your degree and just make sure you do work experience aswell. if you work when doing your degree just work in that field. no harm in having adegree.
