What are the pros and cons of going to college immediately versus taking a few years off to do something within the community?

It all depends with a better degree comes more money, better education, and more respect.

What are the cons?

you have to study again but I hear you get to pick what field to study so really you are doi ng something you like.

I sense much fear in you.
Fear is the path to the darkside.
Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate.
Hate leads to suffering.-yoda

I think it is better to go straight into graduate school (for a masters) after undergraduate. When you start working, making real money, and getting involved in other things, it becomes really hard to go back to school the longer you wait. Also, when you go back part-time while keeping a full-time job, it can take twice as long as if you just banged it out for another year or two.

Companies will also look at you before someone with only a bachelors degree. Now, if you gostraight into a doctorate, thenit may have hurt your chances of getting a jobright after school. If you want a doctorate, it is better to work on it while you already have a job in your career field. Your market potential increases almost 10-fold because you have experienceto go along with that PhD.
Quote:
One thing to keep in mind is that some careers demand nothing less than a PhD, so you may have to stick in school for the long haul either way, so it is best to just get it done early so you can move on with your life.
