Well sociology is basically about how social structures affectvarious aspects of our life. I'm mostly interested in crime and law so I tend to take sociology classes that deal with these issues. There are also courses on health careand mental health, thefamily and other agents of sociolization, racism, ethnic groups, the role of norms, etc.
I would advice you to take an introductory course in sociology. Most of thosecourses will cover all the topics I've just listed. It will help to give you a better understanding offield as well as help you to figure out which stream you want to go into.
I actually find social psychology more interesting than sociology, but I may be a little biased asam a psychology speicalist. I'm not in that stream of psychology but I took a required course in it. They deal less with social structures and more with how aspects of a givensituation canaffect the individual. They have some very interesting theories and experiments, argueably some of the best in all of psychology. I would say just shop around and see what interests you.
I hope this helps. Good luck. niceone.gif

well
of the courses at ou social sciences seems to be my best bet
i am considering
either child development, social policy, social sciences in action, culture media and identities and possibly religion
these are the main areas i am looking into though at degree level
as most should know i studied media before so that aspect is no misery its just general social sciences
when i was at school in usa elementary social sciences was taught then but forgot what it was about
what will i be getting myself into
plus are there any resources i could invest in now to give ne an understanding because ou have said i dont need level one courses just 2 and 3 to get my hnours

Hi Ladyday
Sociology can be very boring but also very intresting, you have to be able to open and stretch yr mind to new lengths and dive deeper into philsophical contexts of human agency. That bit is not only hard but very scary 4me anyway , but italso can be rewarding as when you think about different aspects of yr life sometimes classical theorist will fit into place. Sociology will also teach you to look at the social from a distance and to look at how knowledge is distributed thorugh social locations.
I wish this time last year i completely detached myself from sociology, meaning that when u do,while reading the mountains of books, analysinsg the social comes so naturally.
If you are going to consider sociology, always remeber that it is yr world view and no one can take that away from you. Be brave because sociology can take you deep into thoughts you wish you never wanted to have but don't be scared...lol
You will see society totally differently
Ifyr intrested more in either child development, social policy, social sciences in action, culture media and identities and possibly religion
I would advice you to pick social policy as it covers most of what you have mentioned, social policy is very good if you like studying the active side of social science, you will be able to engage in different contexts. Housing, Welfare, Health, Crime etc
child studies is more related to the family??check anysocial science department for that. culture media, etc ,Cultual studies?? Religion, Theology??
hope it helps banana.gif

Social Science does cover a wide area,, I have done a post grad in Social Psychology, Environmental Sociology and also Psychological Pathology, so I can tell you about these three areas as they were three completely different degrees.
