Advice on what brand of laptops to get

Well right now I am a college student studying Business Management and I need a laptop for school, does anybody have any suggestions on what brand of laptops I should look for? So far I've heard good and bad from everybody about laptops from Dell to Gateway to HP's and so forth...

Dell got some ridicolously cheap deals on laptops at the moment but I'm not sure if that extends to US as well. Check their website. My mum has a Dell and so does my workplace and no problems I know of. My next machine will be one.

I would go for either HP, Sony or panasonic. I recently havebought a HP, and it is everything that i could ask for. Sony is alsoanother good make,lots of my friends have boughtsome for uni.Ialso think it depends on how much you are willing to spend. what is your budget?

I was thinking about Dells, those are pretty good laptops.

My budget is something that's less than $2,000, but if there are some that's over that and worth the money, please suggest.

I am not recommending this machine but this website makes a good presentation. I don't know how many other machines they reviewed this way.

I have a problem with the way you expressed your question.

If I payed attention to laptops today the way I did to stereos back in the 70's I would say something like:

If you are spending about $2000 you should buy model Q of brand C.

If you are spending about $1500 you should buy model Z of brand B.

If you are spending about $1000 you should buy model X of brand D.

Assuming an entire spectrum can be judged by brand is a mistake. Of course now I'm old and jaded and though computer advertising today reminds me of stereo advertising back then, the genre is fundamentally different. Anybody could use any stereo. You did not specify the applications you intended to run or what your budget was. The technology of computers is changing faster than I remember audio doing in the 70's. If you buy a $2,000 computer today it will be worth about $500 in two years. I would be reluctant to suggest the average individual spend more the $1000 on a laptop.

You also didn't say how much you know about using any application software already. The lowest priced laptops go for around $700 in the states. I might be able to find a decent used laptop for $300. But considering the learning curve with a computer a person could easily spend $1500 worth of time learning what they need to do. The lack of warranty and the wear and tear on the hard drive could mean the savings on a used laptop is hardly worth the slight benefit. I think the situation is significantly different with used desktops because they are much more generic.

I was simply trying to explain that the entire line of one brand might not necessarily be the best at every price point.

I would recommend an Apple MacBook for you. Apple also do as well generous student discounts on their computers as well. You can also dual boot and put Windows on an Apple laptop now if so wished to.
I am an Apple user i own a MacBook Pro. I switched in February of this year and i am glad that i did.

Oh that's good. So you can now put a Windows Operating System on a Apple? That's cool, I didn't know that.
