Question Career choices for true self dependency - 19-07-08, 06:41 PM

Hotep,

I need you guys advice on which career path you think would be more suitable or beneficial for one who wants to be self reliant and eventually work for himself. I'm considering of being an electrician, but I'm also interested in electronics and seriously considering of doing a degree in electronics or electronic engineering. I've been told that it is more easier to be self employed as an electrician, as opposed to working in the field of electronics which can be quite diffucilt to work for yourself. Also to be really successful in electronics you would usually have to obtain a master degree.

Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Hotep and welcome to BN UnknownX

I'm not sure which if the two areas would be better for you but it sounds like you have a good idea of the routes for each so far. Are you getting any experience in the field at the moment? I ask because a degree may not necessarily be what you need unless of course you want a specific job that you know will require it.

Having being involved in the recruitment of students for electrical installation courses, I can say that the majority of the applicants had experience on their side and were taking the qualification to make it official or update what they already had. Now I'm not recommending you go and work alone unqualified but some experience with an electrician or electrial company may be a more practical route, depending on how soon you want to start trading.

Hope that helps a little. I know we have some engineers here who may be able to help more so hope they stop by and give yuo some tips.
