I Have read the amazing book "Indaba My Children", and it really ties in the mythological history of the African cotinent. As Credo Mutwa Usamazulu tells the story of the post deluge reconstruction of the African people I began to see the tying together of all the ancient stories from around the world about the great flood.
I personally think that the book would make an amazing film, or animation in the "Avatar" Sense, in the very least it should be in the curriculum as much as Homers Odysey, the Bhgavad Gita or Beowulf or any other ancient myth, including the Bible.
There is an amazing recounting of the creation myths of the ancient Bantu as preserved by the Zulu People, it really is like nothing else I have read. It is alllegorical, but also incredibly human and heart rending.
It contains a great deal of the history of ancient Sub Saharan Africa and a fair few of its tribes and more recent history, covering 50,000 years to the recent colonisation by the Europeans. The most striking thing is the sense of values that are conveyed in the stories, in some cases somethings that I feel many of us in the west would find very difficult to accept, our ancestors saw things very differently!
The Heros, Heroins, villains, demons and gods equal those of the Greeks or the Egyptians.
It is epic in every sense, but quite heavy going. It preserves a sense of Africanness that predates Christianity and Islam and I would argue could help many of us put into context the incredible history and turmoil of Africa.( We were butchering each other long before the white man came long). It would be a good way for us to convey some profound and unique awareness of our African heritage to our children.
Here is an idea, how about a comic book or series of comics that would tell the story in a digestable form? I once saw the ancient Hindu Scripture the Bhagavad Gita as a series of comics. Any takers?
