Well now kunjufu, i know that you do not appreciate sermons. So i won't go there. But since you did mention the words Bible, evil and god (even if it was the little "g").

So here goes.

I do want to be clear on what i reply so I need to ask you one question. What does the Bible define as evil in your opinion?

While I await that reply I am trying to remember one of the philosophers names who posed that evil is necessary in order for God (big "G") to exist. Was it Berkeley, Spinoza, Hume or Marchiavelli?

If you remember Kunfuju, big "G" God mentioned that the "knowledge of good and evil" would be a problem for adam.

Evil is not an item, a tangible thing, but a (ahem) perspective or choice that a body makes. which would you say is natural, good or evil? which benefits man? which causes grief to man?

You'll have to forgive me its been a long time since i stuck my nose into the bible..So I'm not sure how the bible defines 'evil'.. {i'm being honest not evasive on this question i genuinely don't know ok}..

However at a guess I would define 'evil' as the Devil and the devil as the mirror opposite to god..[small g or big G shouldn't matter i suspect god whomever it is, is not that petty].

Again this is a question a vehicle if you like to broaden the debate on 'evil', i'm not sure who you're referring to but i do remember socialogists from the functional field of study referencing that evil/crime is a necessity for society as it often become the catylst for change and for self examination of issues of morality and acceptability...

So my thoughtys were more in that vain, that Evil/devil, it could be argued gives god a context..christianity meaning and value..otherwise the arguement how would we weight up whether it was worth having or not...

Ps.. I don't dislike sermonising.. It just that it is NOT personalised answer that is inclusive for others to join..

Again since the bible, God and evil were mentioned i will speak on that wise.

the bible says that God created everything good (the opposite of evil). he created man faultless. gave him one commandment, to not partake of one tree in the garden planted for his benefit (good). he was warned of the consequences there of.

no evil was present before adam (first man) chose to disobey God. It was the Knowledge of good and evil that caused the down fall as i said earlier. the model of evil did adam and earthlings no good.

it cost God the life of His only begotten son to defeat evil (or pay the price for sin).

Sounds as though you are on the right track!

PS The paradox is that the most evil of evils is treated as though he were a saint -- (e.g. Dubya Bush). This fool has killed more people and spread more false terror in this decade alone than all of the other 4 presidents within my lifetime combined...!

i.e. Hitler, Mussolini, and the emperor of Japan heroes and Churchill, Roosevelt, villains....

the more i looked at the supposed most evil men in history, i thought to myself, it was all a matter of perspective...the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the native Americans by the almost all white u.s. military was, to the mostly white public heroic, (men like general Custer) saw it as a necessary battle and many ( in my view) war criminals, like Custer have received medals of honour for that war...

Absolute evil, it's a matter of perspective...right ?

guys,

i am here to learn from the smart and wise ones who grace this forum. sometimes my simple minded questions may aggrivate you but please bare with me and help an old ignorant man out.

I may have missed something but in my first post on this matter i asked about the word absolute linked to evil but did not go into it.

i still have a queasy feeling with absolute attached to it.

can some one please bring me to see what absolute evil is in reference to.

maybe someone can give me some examples of it. i believe this maybe the first time i have recognized them being used together.
