I tend to look at the prevealence of young Blacks in IT from a different perspective:
I DO agree that there is a shortage of Black Doctors and Lawyers and Scientists-there is no question of that. But I also recognize that Black people on the average do not want to be left behind in the field of technology and recognise that knowing about IT means getting a better edge on social control in the long run. Also that there is a lot of technophobia in this field among Blacks and the explosion of Blacks into this field is a trend of breaking through the fear of technology by engaging it directly.
I think also that the media has influenced this as well and that a lot of this is really deeply subconscious. Films like THE MATRIX and tv programs like STARGATEfor instance, have a direct influence in motivating Black youth to seek to be involved in the rapid development of IT, understanding the global implications attached to technological proliferation, and the dis-advantages of not understanding anything about how such technology has been, can be or might be used against us.
On the other end of this however, I do predict that the next trend will be among science, particularly things like micro-biology and genetic engineering; these fieldswill likely become-and gradually are in fact-more and more dominated by Blacks.
