Well For the past few years me and a group of friends have always given up somthing we do as part of habbit or somthing we love for lent, but its seems that the tradition is dying out.

Now i know lent is traditionally a fasting period, but as we dont fast we kinda fast one particular food item or somthing we enjoy.

Well last year i gave up chocolate, sweets, cakes and biscuits ( basically all the sweet junk food) for lent and successfully went through the whole lent period without eating those foodsbanana.giffinishing with a smaller more toned body and celebrating with a massive easter egg on easter sunday

A friend gave up swearing and using bad words, one gave us cola drinks, one crisps and the list goes on. Whenever a person broke lent we had a lent box and the proceeds went to charity.

Well this year i am giving up bread and chocolate to give myself a challenge is anyone else giving anything up?

Dates:

Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. Lent begins on 9 February 2005 and ends on 26 March 2005.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on 24 March (Holy Thursday), with the beginning of the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Lent is a period of extra prayer, fasting, and penance once a year in preparation for Easter, the feast of the Holy Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a little over 40 days long. Lent is one of the four periods of fasting in the Byzantine year, and therefore, it is sometimes called Great Lent in our Church. Lent comes from an ancient English word which means Spring. The other three traditional fast periods are two weeks before the Feast of Ss. Peter and Paul on June 29, two weeks before the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God on August 15, and 40 days before Christmas. The fast before Christmas is also called the Philipovka, which means little Philip, because it begins on November 15 which is the day after the Feast of St.

To me lent doesnt necessarily have to be done and a lot of people dont do it nowadays, i just do it 4 fun

@Soul_Lost

So lent is some kind of religious festival/celebration? Would that be in the Christian or Roman Catholic faith, or both?
