what is the most effective method of getting a job anyway? because I am with about 12 recruitment agencies now both in central london and in surrey and I have been looking since January this year and still have not found a new job. confused3
its become a joke because i'm in a temporary part time role at the moment, which simply does not pay enough only working 22 hours per week!
what else should i be doing to find one??

Viola,
As long as you're a person of color, it will play role in you getting jobs, but there are other factors that you also have to consider besides race. I don't know about England, but I know in the states, the economy sucks big time! iPeople are losing their jobs left and right. It's so bad that I'm afraid that I will not last as long on job like my father( who was on his job for 32 years before he retiring) and that I will have a checkered job history, some jobs don't want to hire people like that.
Secondly, it's who you know. Whether you're Black,White etc nepotism is just as bad as racism. I've known people with great credential who should have gotten the job, but because so and so knows the top dog of the company she was able to get it much faster. That have always gotten on my last nerves! Lastly ,crazy as this may sound, sometimes where you went to school at and the grade you made may also play a role in it as well. I had a friend who was a college graduate and had a great work record, but she found it hard to get a job. Do you want to know what held her back in her employment opportunities? Believe it our not, because her overall GPA was below a 3.0, some employers thought ( at least that what she was told) that she didn't put enough effort into her schooling and that she may not do the same with the job( in which I highly disagreed with that thought) and in another case, her college. She went to a HBCU( Savannah State College), but with some White Employers she dealt with, they didn't recognize the school. They only knew HBCU"s like Morehouse, Spelman or Howard University--The Top Black Colleges. They felt that she didn't go to a reputable college( which to me was discrimatory). Also make sure that it isn't yousomething that may be preventing you from being hired.

If you have the determination , enthusiasm, ambition,
then you can pro-actively get any job you want.
example
at uni, everyone tends to take part -time jobs in cafes, shops, strip bars......whatever
now thats fine
but people like me, know it is a competitive society........especially being a women and black
I have just bagged my self a job as a Regulatory affairs assistant for 6 months ,
it is directly linked to what i want to do , which is blending legal with science, i have managed to get two days a week, so that i can still study full-time, the company is fortune100 company
was it easy, i had people laugh at me on the phone
did i had to show cleavege.................what cleavage........unless you are talking my big african butt cleavege..........dunno.......i had a long mac jacket.
so yes you can find a job...............just give it 101%..........breathe and eat that sheesh

well done........I firmly believe that it's the takers in life that get what they want, you have to create opportunities sometimes, some people will give you a job simply because you had the audacity to ask them for one...............................it's not just about applying to adverts.......most posts are never advertised anyway.

To those that still find the doors closed ....have you ever thought of becoming self employed? its always an option.

These two people are Caucasians, yes they White. Only a white person would type foolishness like this on a black run website.
Racism exists in the UK stop fooling yourselves. White peope fear black people in the work place, for what reason i have yet to understand but i believe Jealousy as a great part to do with it.
The fact that if a black person should get as far as to reaching the interview process, they will most likely sit before an interview panel that is predominantly white, thus holding the power to employ them or not ? and then so that it doesn't look entirely bad, they might sprinkle the odd asian in whom also have a strong dislike for black people. Let me tell you, the odds are not good.
This isn't about defeatism, I can truely see where viola is coming from. Its about having the odds stacked against you before you even start and its no use burying our heads in the sand and saying prejudice and racism does not play a part in the interview process, it doesn't help the matter.
I have been in many an interview, where across the table i'm speaking to from two to four white people at one time, you telling me that out of that number i'm not having to deal with at least one who holds a prejudice who will not then use that prejudice to influence the rest of the panel, if at all the rest of the panel don't hold them same prejudice anyway ?
In this country (UK)black people have a naivety when it comes to who we are actually facing, who we are actually up against ? we think that the panel being all white is not by design, its by accident. That two blacks in a company of say 150 strong staff, is accidental, in the middle of a city filled with diverse communities. You have not comprehended your enemy and yes i said it, an ENEMY. When apeople agree and put in place a plan that will stop you and yours frombeing able to provide food for your own, thats an enemy. I know he/she might look across the table from you with all smilesand appearing harmless, but white people would rather employ white people ? and watch the rest starve around them, understand their nature ? see it for what it is, and then yes deal with it. Don't bury your heads in the sand.
Sometimes i oftenfeel like asking in interviews, really what is my chance ofgetting this job. If i was to look at the ethinicmake up of your company or the team i am about to join, what are my chances? Or couldiquickly meet the team that i am to join ... that often will give you an idea of your chances. It don't matter sometimes how qualified you are, look at the pattern already set within the managers work environment, for he is the one that as set it and ask yourself, if you see no diversity why ?
White people have amental disease that they nurse called racism and it helps them to keep power.
Then they try to Jedi mind trick the masses into believing they are a people that deal fairly ? when what they actually do says otherwise.
We could change the world, If God would give us the source code.

Look racism exist in the UK and all over the world, even in Africa, you can't eliminate it so just face it, it is rooted in prejudice that each individual no matter how much they deny it, has. I work in a top investment bank, yes I can count the number of black people inthe wholefirm butI have neverencountered racism, I deal with clients from all over the world, but command respect based on myability to do the job well.A person that is seeking a job should do everything to make sure that he or she is the perfect candidate for that position. A lot of black people use racism as an excuse for not landing a job when really they should be focusing on their interview skills or whether there qualification or experience actually meets the criteria of the role. If u do believe that u are well suited for a particular position which u were rejected, ask for a feed back, sometimes we fail to notice certain characteristics that are inappropriate at an interview or lack the ability to answer questions in depth.
