What's in a Word: Howard Beach Hate Crime Trial

A jury was selected for the trial of Nicholas Minucci, who was charged with a bias attack after beating a black man in Howard Beach last June. The jury includes four whites, four blacks, three Hispanics, and one Asian, but more interesting is how the jury was selected and how the defense seems to be approaching the trial. Prosecutors charged Minucci with a hate crime because he said, "What up n-----" during his attack on Glenn Moore (Moore suffered a fractured skull from the beating administered by Minucci and his friends in the middle of the night). The NY Times says Minucci's defense "is expected to suggest that a young man growing up in a mixed neighborhood in New York City uses 'the N word' as a matter of course and that the word no longer carries the racially charged overtones it has historically." The defense asked potential jurors if they were offended by the "n word" while prosecutors asked the jury pool if they listened to rap music. Minucci's mother Maria said the trial was a way for the Queens DA to get publicity and said of the word of the day, "Every kid in the neighborhood uses it. It doesn't mean the same thing anymore. They all say it all day long, no matter what race. They all grow up saying it now... All of Nick's friends — black, white, Spanish, Chinese — they all use the word. You should hear when they talk on the phone to him in jail. "

Because of sissy slaves like YOU, things like this happen.

This is the reason the Black community is in so much turmoil. We have many happy slaves who are glad to carry on Massa's beloved traditions of hatred and genocide. You have absolutely no pride. Admit it, you hate yourself. You call your own people the word that was HISSED INTO BLACK WOMEN'S EARS AS THEY WERE RAPED, SCREAMED AT BLACK MEN AS THEY SWUNG FROM BLOODSOAKED TREES. You are also showing an utter lack of intelligence. What's the matter, Suzie? Can't think of your own term for yourself? You want the name that Massa gave you, don't you?

Ok, I get it. This slave is happy on his mental plantation. Mentally dead. And I've wasted enough time on his eulogy.

BTW, why are we using the so called'N-word'? Do you think its wrong to say the full word? Do you think its wrong to spell out what you are? I dont. Just wanted to clear that up.

Food for thought...
Did you ever ask yourself why, of all the thousands of ethnic derogatives to choose from, why, is it that the n word is the one of choice? Why is it that people of different ethnicities don't ever make use of the ethnic derogative particular to themselves, and why we are so comfortable with everyone else making use of a derogative particular to us-while we don't ever use any other than that.
I wrote an editorial piece-which I lost-but the point is, if we are going to be so multiculturally and raciallytolerant then hey, pull all of the racial slurs and ethnic derogativesout of the hat and let's make use of them all.

@ Devorn
Ummm.....maybe you missed the point. The realquestion being asked heris 'Why Use It (on ourselves)?
Them using it is one thing (we would expect them, to after all they created it). But we don't expect our own to use it on our own.....you get the point?

A previous poster already explained why. I don't use the word, matter of fact I don't use slangs because i think it disrespectful not calling people by their names or nick-names.
I don't really know why some of us use it, but i don't think the black people who use it should be despised for it. You guys are actually the ones with the problem. Constantly worrying about what white people think of us and how they perceive us.
1.the rappers are acting ignorant (white people are gonna think we're all ignorant now)
2.Oh my god, a black ****star sucking *****(white people may think they're slutty)
3.why is he talking in slangs (whites are gonna think we uneducated fools now, OH NO)
4.Holy Cow, how can a black person kill another black person(happens in every race)
I could go on and on, the big problem is not the N word, black on black violence, rappers.
Newly discovered *did you know 90% white use the word way before rap was invented?(join the white media and rip black men for every negative trend that's occuring in society.)
Correct me if i'm wrong, educate the white race about racism an ignorance or you'll rather educate this black youth about how rappers are messing it all up, for four centuries and counting?

Devorn, those are powerful words. Yepper, we are still trying to "catch up". Still trying to find out, how can we become "acceptable" to "White" people.
One of these centuries, we will wake up and discover, we aresimply accepted by those who accept us.
It's a difficult concept to learn. But we needto give up seeking acceptance from the mainstream. They have never really approved of us. It might be awhile, before they see us as just regular Human Beings.

Watch This, It may give some of you an insight on why its wrong to use this word, or change the meaning or spelling, it doesn't change the connotations of the word.
Your giving people like him an excuse to racially abuse us, not that white people need one anyway. It really does bring it home when there is actually room for debate when a white teacher calls a black pupil a*igga! Makes me glad that i live in the UKbecause that would never happen over here!
I am not looking for approval or acceptance from a white society that doesn't like me anywayand never will. Care not about them. At the same time when im being racially abused i don't want no white man telling me its because we (black people) say its ok to do so, because then, because of the idiot ignorant contingent, i have no argument!
We have created a grey area where this word is concerned and i constantly ask myself - WHY???confused3
What are the benefits?
The word has not been neutralisedor had the 'sting' taken out of it at all, its still as offensive as it has always been. So all theAfricans who say they are using the word for that reason should realise that now, after400 or whatever years, your quest has failed and just stop. Just stop now!
We disrespect and devalue our OWN sh*t and our own folks in an effort to legitimize ourselves to other people and I find it despicable and lacking in dignity - G Mahogany 2008
