Martial Art Classes -
27-09-08, 06:56 PM
Greeting BNV,
does any1 know of any good black centred martial art classes in Lodon that take place evenings during the week, or weekends? I'm very keen on Mashufaa and I know of classes that run in Totthenham on Monday evening and Wed in Deptford..the price range is pretty decent too.
I know an org in Walthamstow that run a different from of martial art classes (forgot the name but they charge £10 per session) At this rate I would be paying a min of £40 a month for one session a week. I know the org runs other valid activities for our community i.e saturday school, his/our STORY classes etc.. but still.
So is anyone aware of any other black centred martial art classes? preferably in the west london location.. it doesn't necessarily have to be Mashufaa.

African; That pertaining to the peoples and culture of the second lagest continent in the world.
Martial arts; The "art of combat" usually attributed to East Asian arts of combat but is used generically.
Capoeira is an African art of combat.

I'm more interested in African centred martial arts because far too much has been hijacked or stolen from African people and is never given the credit of where it actually originated from.
Martial arts is not just solely based on physical self defence. The higher level is not to even attract attention, but if you are confronted with trouble you know and have the confidence to defend yourself if need be.
Hence why I'm particularly interested in Mashufaa, as it incorporates all this and much more and it most definitely works. Mashufaa means spirit of a warrior..one who can bypass fear through determination, dedcaition and will.
And as for Capoeira..Black Lion has clearly explained Capoeira is by definition a form of martial arts.

I will prob check this out. West London does seem to lack these kind of classes, even South LDN..apart from a class teaching Capoeira that Black Lion posted which I believe takes place in West London.

Capoeira, as well as many other martial arts, suffer from the same difficulty: they were developed in a situation which was not conducive to the growth of a martial art. In each case the people developing and teaching the martial art were doing so in defiance of the law, and by necessity were disguising the martial art as something it wasn't. In the case of Capoeira, dancing. In the case of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, a moving meditation, you get a lot of superfluous and unnecessary movement in these kinds of martial arts. The real question, though, is at what point you need to step back and admit that the whole damn thing is bullshit and tainted by that structural inefficiency.
In any sort of violent situation I have to admit that I'm more likely to turn around and run away than I am to do a handstand and try to kick somebody in the head. One of those is a stupid thing to do, and it ain't the former.

You may have a point but this does not apply to all African centred martial arts as..NOT all African centred martial arts are like you mentioned. This is because NOT all African centred martial arts originated while we were held in bondage against our will.
All other martial arts was influenced by African martial arts as it originates from us. Have you read the African origins of martial arts by I think.. Chancloner Williams?
Nuba is where all forms of martial arts came from. Similar to the ancient Nubians as seem on tombs around the 12th dynasty. Other nations have capitalised off of our creation and used it to befit them i.e incorporating their own languages to it.
