Tha Yard - BLEACHING ISSUES IN JAMAICA

It does more harm than good. They all look like they bleach (except the daughter) which I'm sure was not the intended idea.

I doubt they were that dark anyway.

On a side note I've always found it weird because Caribbeans were/are seen as a bit lighter (in the UK anyway) but yet still bleach as much as anyone else. When I started seeing documentaries/programmes/videos of Jamaicans actually in their country I was surprised that most are actually darker than I thought, given the whole Hullabaloo I was fed growing up.

Don't understand why people assume they'll look more attractive with lighter skin. It's about facial symmetry and good skin . I'm talking about even skin tone as opposed to light and dark patches every where like the family in the above video. Body type and facial features are more debatable.

The way the Caribbean is sold in the UK is ridiculous.
My dads was born in Jamaica, but his mum came from Cuba. When I tell people this, and how I get harassed by the police when I go to Cuba, as they think I'm a Cuban in tourist areas, they straight tell me I'm lying. *shakes head*

Now Garvey is Jamaica's first national hero. The level of dis-information, Africans on that Island have been subjected to, stops too many of them from truly realising the depth and significance of their historic struggle on that Island and the beauty and power of their African heritage and culture. Natural consequence of backwards colonial education. What do we really expect when our own governments are complicit. Give the people a decent historical framework to work with and then lets talk about the level of skin bleaching. Right now, its at the level its supposed to be.

Which leads to another question. If skin bleaching products had been around 100 years ago would it have been as rife as now..has the mentality changed/ or is it just the fact that now it can be done.

it is a deep psychological problem...to not be able to accept yourself for who and what you are. there still is a divide even in our own community with the skin color thing...i know 'blacks' who stay out of the sun and are proud of the fact that they are *******s to white jews who had the stores in the 'bottoms' and slipped it to their mamas. These men have nothing to do with them.

I remember attending Southern University in Baton Rouge in the late 60s and found out why I had so much trouble fitting in. There is a war amonst us about skin shade...

i did not have a damn thing to do with my skin color or hair...just no one else did... you can not be led by the nose by the 'ring of skin color'.

I will never forget a statement in Sex and Race, where JA Rogers said that when Africans first saw whites they laughed at the pale skin and pointed nose and generally thought they were ugly.

I dont think skin bleaching is about wanting to be white as in Caucasian, or even looking like them. Its about not being black and having the "status" that goes with that.

In the video the young boy said, "Lighter skin guys get all the girls". Also It's no secret that in the Caribbean lighter skin blacks are favoured in more glamourous/higher ranking occupations at times. Id even go as far as saying that this mental illness is not exclusive to the poor, uneducated or unemployed. Status is probably an equally obsession to some middle class blacks as well.

On the flipside Whites are forever laying in the sun to get darker, not because they wish to lose their status, but because pale skin is unattractive and offensive to the planet...lol

Its a fugged up world we live in.

Yes, that is sad and hella depressing................however I wonder how many light skinned sisters and brothers,specially sisters,if asked to give up their light skin and become dark-if such a thing were possible-how many would volunteer to do so??

Given the fact that light skin,like white, is a passport to certain things,certain privileges,whether you wish to admit that or not.

Sammy Sosa arrived at the Latin Grammy awards on Nov. 5, 2009 and nobody could recognize the former Major League slugger. It wasn't that he has aged and started to wrinkle with age, Sammy Sosa was as white as a ghost!
Over the last few months, Sammy Sosa has become frighteningly white. Some say that this could be because of a cosmetic procedure, steroid side-effects, or even Michael Jackson's disease, also known as vitiligio. But Sosa's friends say that Sammy has undergone a procedure to bleach his skin tone.
The last time that the paparazzi was able to get snapshots of Sosa was in May 2009. Now there are several speculations that Sosa's health may not be where it use to be. The difference in Sosa's skin tone should be alarming to his doctors, unless they know what is going on with the former Cubs slugger.
Sosa's close friend said that he is "not trying to be Michael Jackson." The procedure that Sosa underwent is to rejuvenate his skin. People around Sosa said that they were surprised that the procedure left this that pale and white but could soon return to his normal shade.
Sosa said that he doesn't look the same as the picture photographed of him at the Latin Grammy Awards. Its was just bad timing to go out in public in the middle of a procedure that had him looking very white. Other people say that after that photo Sosa wan't that white, it was just the lighting around the cameras that produced an effect on the photo.
According to one of Sosa's doctors, the former baseball player underwent several of these operations after retiring because he was concerned that his skin was damaged after playing under the sun for many years.
Sammy Sosa approaches his 41st birthday and says that he still can play baseball. Sosa retired from baseball with 609 home-runs and according to several reports, he was on the list of 104 players that failed steroid tests in 2003. He has never officially retired from baseball, he just hasn't played since 2007.
He has been sporting a new look this year that includes green eyes to go with his lighter skin. Someone call the fashion police on Sammy Sosa! The look is not working for him. He doesn't look as tough as he was when he played baseball. He looks like one of those stupid Twilight vampires with the pale skin and green eyes.
