Thanks Saint - You know, I was watching a programme, (about last year and its one of those programmes that wasburied deep in the early hours of the morning); it asked the question as to who were the happiest people across the globe. Time and time again the answerwe got from the Africans kids, (yes, I too was surprised that they even asked them!), was thatthey were very happy. Time and time again the response we got from English white kids was that they were not!

The reasonI think, was obvious to me from the start, and that is, we are more isolated here where as in the so called, 'developing countries' people tend to rely on each other more. A real community.

We are really going off the subject now!!!

I was watching the news this morning and 12 European states have made smacking a child illegal. Now UK might follow suit.

Do you think smacking your child is a vital tool in behaviour correction

How are they going to define what is illegal eg smack in the hand, or smack in the face that leaves a red mark.

Personally I have been smacked when i was young andI can't say if it made me a better or worse person ( I know plenty thinking " she should'ave been boxed "LOL)

The House of Lords is to vote on whether the smacking of children should be restricted.

Liberal Democrat peer Lord Lester of Herne Hill is proposing an amendment in the Lords this afternoon to limit the use of the traditional defence of "reasonable chastisement", which dates back to 1860.

It would mean any parent who inflicts actual bodily harm on a child could be prosecuted.

Lord Lester said: "Under my amendment, parents will still be able to smack their children if they don't harm them physically or mentally."

Tony Blair has said he is opposed to a smacking ban and the Government's policy is that parents should continue to have the right to give kids mild smacks, though not excessive punishment.

Is it possible to smack a child without causing them mental harm? Isn't the point of smacking to shock the child mentally (which usually leads to tears) rather than to cause them pain (as in physical punishment)

Do you think that the Lords or Government should be able to dictate how we discipline our children?

Most sensible people know the limits of what is acceptable.

I don't agree with those who say there is a fine line between discipline and abuse. There is a world of difference. I was disciplined and am thankful for it. I think most Cariibean and African people will feel the same, its a cultural thing. We are brought up with manners and respect and physical discipline is essential in raising a child. To imply that my mother was abusive because she smacked my naughty legs is ridicolous.

Children must be protected from abusive parents yes, beating a child excessively is brutal as lessons you as a person and may permanently damage a child emotionally however....

Good parents must not suffer under the same label as the few monsters out there. I don't think a law banning smacking is constructive or useful for those children who are abused. If thelaw on abuse and assault can't help them now then what good a is a new law? Its only purpose would be to prosecute good parents who smack.... This must not be allowed.

I agree with DM - there is a massive difference between abuse and discipline. And it is very much down to cultural attitudes towards discipline.

But there are many parents who don't use physical discipline as a tool in disciplining their children, and their children grow up fine, and vice versa.

The long and short of it is, good parents, should be allowed to judge what they deem as the necessary discipline for their child.

It becomes problematic, when trying to weed out abusive parents, because good parents could (as we have seen with this proposed law, which has been rejected) get caught up in the crack down on parents who abuse their children.

@All. No white government is telling me how to discipline my children. And therefore no need to state the obvious as parents are the law and moral authority's in a home not the state.

The extreme examples these people cite do not concern me, as any fool can wish to justify anything by citing extreme examples.

I have been beaten once and I damn deserved it and my terror of a younger brother probably 3 times at the most by my mother. Never did us any harm and this argument that beating your child justifies violence ..... or teaches violence is rubbish.

I suggest most right thinking black people will simply ignore these fools and continue with their lives. Tommorow they will come with another fad and expect us to jump to it or get with their programme.

england need to realise this is now a multi cultural society...

they cant span everyone under the ame umbrella...

and that is why there kids are soo rude...

i have been beaten countless times between my mom, dad , teachers, grandad, strangers to...

both me and my brother... and my sister as a matter of fact growing up back home ... u get nuff lick trust mi...

and it hasnt done me any bad.... in fact im a better person because of it.. i remember when i came to england and i was in college and i use to call the lecturer sir... everone would laugh.. and even the lecturer would say call me by my first name... anyway back to the point....

kids need discipline and direction and that some time means a good old fashion cuff....

so be it...

and like mr black said no one is gonna tell me how to raise my kids....

when i have them anyway...

there are fighting a losing battle they can never stop people form smackin kids... simply because differnt people different culture....

There can only be... one...
