In the 1950s a lot of people came to work in the UK from the Caribbean, with a lot from Jamaica. There are also a fair amount from Nigeria. Obviously there are lots of second, third, (fourth?) generation...

I'm not really a history expert, but I thought I'd just mention this, in case you didn't know already...

like you guys in the states there has been a long history of black people in the uk. except the information in regards is not so easy to find. there is a bridge said to be named after an african slave possibly in liverpool........correct me if i am wrong please. . someone did mention that the famous clock big ben was named adfter a black person too. when speaking of black culture in uk people often go back to last great migration so to speak after the world wars when britain asked people from its former colonies to come lend a hand and rebuild the land. many did take up the offer expecting more than what they got. people faced racism and ended up in horrible jobs. racism is still in most institutions which is seen by the polices handling of the Stephen Lawrence case....a gifted young black guy who was well into his education. or even the high rate in which teachers expel black kids especially boys ......... culturally speaking we have direct cultural influences from the caribbean and africa.

that is just the short version.

@bluehoney explain what you meant by uptight as it may have just been an misunderstanding -culturally?

I don't personally feel as though there is a real good 'black culture' here as in the USA andI think it could bebecause we never went through a rigid segregation period. Of courseI am not advocating segregation, (although actually when i think about it.... hmmmm?),I am actuallythinking along the lines of you guys had to depend on each other then, whereas we neverhad that necessity. Its easy to knock something then to praise it though, soI will say that our culture is growing stronger, despite appearances, all the time. Yeah!!!

The next question you should ask is WHY you lot do not know about the rest of the world, let alone aboutblack cultures elsewhere. Just think of the impact we could make if all of the Caribbean, the 'blacks' in theUSA and peeps overhere could make, if we were united!

You are welcome bluehoney, but you don't say whether they answer your questions or whetherthey were what you was looking for - some feedback would be nice!

Same here, althoughI heard that DNA may may provide some breakthrough for us.

Again the same is true here

We have them here too (not sure about judges however), butI suppose they are more intergrated among the white species here!

@bluehoney

That is whatI am slightly confused over myself. You seeI think it isdifferent overthere; people in America, seem to more segregated this way:each group could practically only see members oftheir group asthey go abouttheirlifestyle. I do not necessarily seethat as bad thing. Whereas here, because, if you like the white people are more 'in our faces', we have to endure their hatred more frequently, -I say thisquite candidly because they, (white people),certainlydo not love us!!!

I suppose it depends on how youview racism.

I cannot answer the question with completeauthority becauseI don't know about America's racism today, so I cannot fully compare, but it certainly APPEARS to me, that life is better over there, then here.

Incidentally, this is whatI think both countries share:-
  • Our menfolk being killed off in custody/jails,
  • We cannot get jobs easily because of racism,
  • We both seem to have a glass ceiling to break in orderto get to the so called 'top jobs',
  • APPARENTLY we are doing less well in education AND we are not taught our history,
  • Black folks, again apparently, are among the poor in disproportionatenumbers,
  • We are both among the so called 'minorities'.
  • The lighter your skin is, (historically and to a certain extent, STILL), the better our menfolk seem to like it. (SORRY menfolk, but that IS what I SEE!).
  • AND We are bothsuppose to be better at dancing/sports/sex/singing/jumping, then white people,LOL!!!!

seems like no matter where we are, things are similar...but i think we have more rights here, because of the civil rights movment...but we still have a long way to go
