When I was younger I knew the power of the media. I'm very short sighted but during secondary school I was very relctant to wear glasses because of Saved by The Bell's depiction of people with glasses. Geek, nerd, deuphus(spelling). I know it sounds petty but when your 11 years old ou belive all that shit
But in the grand scheme of things, how powerful is the media. some sistas blame the media for perpetuating the myth that light means better, thus making these sistas bleach their skin, etc. however, the media pushes weight loss as well but these same sistas bleaching have there belly's hanging out from there jeans. So does this mean that the media has all this power to influence or do we let the media influence us?
Any replies( especially examples of the power) would be greatly appreciated

The media is powerful - why else would advertisers spend millions to promote a product and where else would people get their information from - from information about a new product, to what is going on in the world?
Would we have known about Iraq etc., if it hadn't been for the media? Yes, but the news would probably travel slowly, also it might be like a giant game of Chinese whispers, by the time another country gets to hearthe news, the original messagemay had changed beyond recognition.
But the media, as we all know, is selective, therefore although it is powerful, some people havelearntto discern the information given accordingly.

The media is very, very powerfull. That is why you were very reluctant to wear glasses when u were 11!.....Asides from that i do think that the media influences us, it is so verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry powerful.
Just look at the figure changes throughout the years. As mentioned by black beauty, the butt is in. A few years ago this was not the case, it was only mainly black gals who showed off there bumpers, cos hey the ass does look sexy and it makes us women look damm good, iv always thought that. Anyways, withjenniffer lopez in the spotlight(mainly her ass) well this has led on to all the fashion, jeans, hipsters, anything to do wid the ass, that white women would not have done or thought of as sexy if it wasn't 4 da media.
As a woman i can honestly say i have never seen so much butt in my whole life. You cant help it its everywhere now. So yes with celebrities, they can push the attention wherever they want it to go, and the vulnerable public will catch on. Also it was seen as attractive to be fair and blonde back in the day. Now it is more acceptable to be curvy, small, tall curly hair, dark hair e.t.c, ethnicity is in.

like it or not the media portrays what is in at a current time, doesn't make it right or wrong. Ovcourse you are you.
Everbody is an individual but all i am saying is that the media portrays it as being acceptable to have different body shapes etc. When i say ethnicity is in, i mean in terms of diff cultures, asain e.t.c. This was not the case before, but now more people who are aspiring to be a certain way, takin influneces from other cultures, which are portrayed by the media. This doesn't mean to say that racism dont exist or wont exist, cos too many people will do things then deny where it came from in da 1st place

Media doesnt seem to have the power to get people t put down the hot dog and do a few sit ups, judging by the rate of obesity n this country. At the end of the da if you have a strong view on something, dont belive media is powerful enuff to change your mind. For example with bod shaeps. I've always been a breast man and no amount of media coverage on bottoms is gonna sway me.
I think the ower of the media is overated to be honest

@cash
Yeah, people should get out more!banana.gif
blktypeHaving said that don't forget the internet is part of the media and you can't be a student today without having to refer to it, so sometimes the media is forced upon us whether we like it or not and we have to react to it.

This is what Mr Rock thinks of the media!
"It ain't us it's the media. It ain't us it's the media. The media has distorted our image to make us look bad.
Cut the farking bulsh-t, aight!? Aight!? You think that when I go to the money machine tonight I'm lookin' over my shoulder for the media?

The minds of our young people is too precious, to leave it in the hands of the media. I have heard that "The first five years of a childs life are so important that it shapes the reast of that childslife."

If there isn't an option to living in this society, then shouldn't we look to have control over the media and how it represents us to the people we share this country with??

Without a doubt the media is the most powerful institution in modern society.
More powerful than religion even.
It has the power to change minds...even governments, and spark revolutions overnight.
If you control the mind's of a people, then you control their behavior and ultimately their destiny.
Because the steel is black...the attitude is exact. - Public Enemy
