The word is in television, on the radio, on adverts and becoming the new way of saying black. But is that a way for the industry (the big white wigs) to disconnect black people from what they have built and shown to excel in?!
|
I think that the guys at the top are completely ignorant as to what people want but they think they know it all, as with everything. I feel that they convince themselves it is in "black peoples" best interest without actually asking them or caring whether they are right or wrong.
I don't think their main priority is to take it away from black people but to allow white people to be able to associate themselves. Thinking that if they do this there will be less of a divide. Which is all complete BS as far as i am concerned confused3
And also, isnt it possible that, under the umbrella of Urban, artists such as Justin Timberfake have a free ride?
Anyone who knows anything about real music knows JT isn't all that lol you can put any umbrella up that you want
Are black people losing everything they excel in under the new umbrella of URBAN?!
[/quote]
I don't beleive this is possible.
The way i see it your history and heritage cannot ever be taken from you, people may add bits and peices and try "remixing" things but they can NEVER take anything from you
e.g: Kung Fu will always be Chinese heritage no matter how many types of kick boxing are invented.

why should they call the section of asian, spanish latino and black women 'the black women section??
If an asian, spanish or latino woman came up 2 a black person and said, im black would u accept it, i dont think so. Sometimes in media they class indian/ pakistani/bengali and black as black people but i dont think that that is accepted amongst the majority of people..................do you?
So the woman section with all those different women in fits the name Urban women, cos they aint ALL STEREOTYPICALLYBLACK, u could have a seperate section for black women if u wana be politically correct but then this is childish.
Yes urban is probably giving artists such as Justin Timberlake a free ride but hey other cultures and music r mixing together and if people continually want to be on there own and not move with the changing times then they are the ones bein left behind and living in the past.
Also black music isn't the only ethnic music that is predominantly in the charts, indian music is now commercial, therfore the media cannot put all music into different sub headings because thats just alienating again. The word URBAN as i see it means different types of musical influences, mainly black, n this word is much easier accepted by white people and teeny boppers, sad but true

Funny this.
Onlyyesterday i was talking to my brother about this.
I think "Urban" is an annoying, irritating new Buzzwordforpeople of different races to embrace the old"Black" scene. By using the word, they feel morecomfortable.
I think it isutter codswallop!

This is simple business decision
70- 80 % of black music is bought by 'non-blacks'. If Urban music seems more accesible than black music then let it stay. At the end of the day I want to see our artists do well and if that means catering to a larger audience then so be it.
I have to be honest this urban thing slightly irritated me about 18 months ago but now it doesnt register in my head at all. When I have gone to afican art exhibitions they been called afriacn art exhibitions , not an urban word in sight. Their's some food for thought

i agree with you there!
sounds like another way for the industry to say 'we like black music' without giving it its due by CALLING it black music!

I think the difference is that we don't really have such a thing as "white" music to begin with, there is music which predominately white but it has alternative names....i.e country or rock.
If it was called white music they would have had to change it a long time ago in all fairness
Jazz, the Blues and Reggae music all still remain as such, it is mainly commercial music that is labelled as Urban (usually)

That word "URBAN" is a FCUK'N piss take..Since when have I or any other black person become urban..??!! nowhere on an application form for e.g: do you see (Ethnic background, urban as a catergory)..Sod that shite I'm "BLACK" happy content & proud to be one thank you very much..
What else will be diluted/taken away from us..?? because it only seems to me that on the occassions that "black" is used is when describing something bad..My skin is black, I'm seen as a blackman, so urban no way not me, & what does urban skin look like anyway..?? because I sure ain't "coloured" either..!!

Our arts and crafts, traditional dresses/ music, etc has escaped urabn labelling but we get pissed when some white dude @ arista records wants to put urban term to some punk rappers talkign abut how they would 'put two bullets in my head and sell crack'' In terms of derogatory rap although I like it I happy its not called black music
RnB , jazz, reggae is a whole diffreent ball game though and I can understand being pissed off about urban labellalling in such categories because most of that is feel good music
