Pimp My Ride, Pimp Juice by Nelly, P.I.M.P by 50 cent. It seems that only in the black community are these scabs celebrated and looked up to as something to aspire to. Remember Godfather Part 1 when Don Corleone dismisses one of his enemies as a pimp too week to have killed his son Sonny. This is how they should be looked at, in a negative light. We all know this, but why is ' you look like a pimp' a positive statemnt amongst black people in our community

When did pimps get venerated? Was it the 70's blaxpoitation
movies or the 90's Snoop Dog/Jay--z ' we dont love them ho's' mentality

Does thsi have a negative effect on black men/women relations. A pimp is a first class misogynist. To aspire to be a pimp, misogny must come part of the deal?

Or. Have I just completely blown this out of proportion?

Any replies will be appreciated

dunno if you know the rapper saigon but i agree with his views on pimps:

What do you feel about the rap game right now?

I think it’s very sour right now. The rap game sucks right now. It’s like money see money do. It went from the gangsta shit to now the pimp shit. Everybody’s a pimp. If you know what a rela pimp is… A real pimp is a homo. Most pimps are homosexuals. That’s why pimps like to ger perms, they like to get their nails done, they like to get manicures and they like to dress fancy. Like women! They hate women because they wanna be women. That’s why they have women out there selling pussy because they don’t have no pussy. They’re mad at em. That’s where the pimp culture come from. Only a homo would beat up a woman, man.

Yeah.

Only a ****ing punk would do that. And this is what these rappers glorify. If you look at it… You have Jay-Z “Big Pimpin’. 50 Cent “P.I.M.P, you’ve got Nelly “Pimp Juice, David Banner “Like a Pimp. You’ve got motha****in’ everybody doing something with a pimp- Everybody’s a pimp. Where are all the stand up guys? Where are all the mother****in’ leaders? Where are the Malcolm X’s and the Martin Luther Kings at, man? They don’t exist no more? They pimps too?

Yeah, that guy is a real example ofthe perfect black man, someone I want to be like. Dumb as **** and a ignorant bigot to boot.

With opinions like that, people only have themselves to blame for having a bad image.

pimps have been around for time. their profile went lo-key and now as soem rappers who styarted off as pimps get higher [rofiles the pimp life they seem to like Ice-T was and probable is still a pimp. not a wanna be. i dont think pimps are glorified its the bling bling lifestyle that is and pimps suit this image.

as for pimp my ride i have seen quite a few white guys latinos on that show. its just mtv

pimps go as far back as do prostitutes oldest professions no matter how undignified.

homo in this context is meant in the pejorative sense, not that the only men that beat women are literally homosexual.
now if you arguing against the inherent homophobia of using gay and synonyms of gay as a diss i would agree thats offkey.
if you arguing that you can beat up a woman and still be a "real" man then i would have to strongly disagree

If you are a mysogynist then surely your issues with hating women may belie a self denial of something else...

I don't think we should write that idea off...........as silly as it seems at first it may have some merit when I think of the tendancies that Omar quoted of Saigon It did make me think

TheBlack American fascination of pimps began even before the infamous blaxploitation movies of the 1970's.Some of the imagery were from books that were revolutionary in their day in the late 60's and beforeforshowing getting over on the white man thru his woman.

There was also the"Bad Negro" syndrome where black men does his thing dispite what the majority society dictates.

i have got a book called pimp by iceberg slim, who is suppose to be the original pimp. Now not to be confused with the glorified pimps wannabe snoop dog and all the other shyte rappers, this story is actually very good and does not glorify pimping in a positive way. The book shows that most become pimps due to a dysfunctional relationship with their dads, mums and society abit like some ppl who post in here............

@Cash..I agree with your sentiment and I remember the remark in the godfather very very well indeed. Its one of my most wathced and memorable and I think one of the most important movies made.

About the pimp. Even though prostitution has existed from the year dot, the pimp is essentially an African-American phenomenon. Sorry, pimps go back to the 1920's. Study Harlem,of that time, the cotton club and its reputation etc etc. The concept could even go back further.

There are some very important studies of the pimp, or hustler as they are called in British sociology. For example Dr Eugene Perkins wicked study Home is a Dirty Street(a brother from Chicago) and a Pryce and Cashmore from the UK.

However, what is clear is that pimps have to be understood in a particular context, not to rationalise their actions because I think they are degenerates of the lowest types. But the context is one of systematic victimisations, institutionalised racism and general exclusion of black men frome equal participation etc in society. But one of the things about pimps is their very high level of conciousness at one level of how white societes treat black men, which is something they have in common with other sections of black masculine society eg the blue coller or working man and even more acute understanding than many so called middle class professionals in fact.

The pimp despises the working blue collar man, who like his parents and that type of group he views as chumps, who slave away, put up with indignities for what. As Robert Merton says, once you take that view its about using informal or illegal means to achieve legitimate ends using their skills or what resources they have and within the timescales they set.

The morality of what they do, is of no consequences as the pimp takes the view he is a victim of an immoral society and situation which has done him no favours and hence such is the individualistic nature, of that world and sub culture that people are simply means to an end. The fact that the people he is using are the victims of all kinds of the same and if not worse, in terms of sexually and emotionally abused and other off key women is of no consequence to him.

In British studies, the fact most of the women the pimps were hustling were white made it even better as far as these creeps are concerned.

These fools think they can glamourise and put a gloss on what is a dirty and most base and immoral activity no matter what the race of the women are. We do not see the images of drugged up women having sex in pissed filled elevators or in abandoned buildings and all the rest which would show us how depraved and ugly this activity is and would drive home what kind of people would involve themsevles in something like this just for money.

MTV will never show that, because talking about "keeping it real" is one thing "keeping it real" is another.

Peace Out

@Gazell

The "peeps" that you know are a bunch of idiots who have no understanding of themselves and do not reflect the majority of BLACK MEN VIEWS.

The things about you that piss me off:

1) Your a boy involving yourself in big man talk with nothing constructive to say.
2) Youre a white boy who involves himself in Black mans business without anything constructive to say.
3) You express opinions about black people because you tie a doo-rag round your head and have a few misguided black "peeps" as friends and generally BEG (ur warped vies of being) black.
4) You write in text.
5) You watch too much MTV.

The list is endless really. Ill be happy to expand another day.

I feel better now..blkwhip
