Should Cars be taken off the road? Why keep increasing tax and fuel, inserting tolls, build more roads to try and reduce congestion? Are the governement trying to force poorer motorist off the road, so that the rich own the road with their large guzzlers? Are they using the congestion charge to push motorist in to urban areas? Why have unleaded if it's supposed to reduceair pollution? If thee problem is air pollution then what about the millions of gallons of petrol aircrafts use, should when stop transport all together? just like cigerattes, if the dyam ting kills then why make them, if cars kills then why make?

let's discuss and what are your opinions?

So you'd ride upto Scotland.... Why do you prefer a bike over a car? if everyone traded in their car for a bike would there still be road rage and how would you sups up yourbike to make it look hot... would you put bigger rims on it and fit an ipod and speakers to it?

@Mentzer very good topic if I may say so and a very key issue about quality of life and other matters concerning resource management and economics...

My views are blatanly hypocritical on this and not going to hide it.

1. There are clearly too man cars on the road. I hate driving in London. Its not pleasurable, stressful and wasteful eg all that time standing in traffic. The cost of parking is a joke, the over enthusiam of parking officials institutionalised. The whole thing is a mess.

2. I would not do without my car and rely on public transport. Sorry my ability to lead a highly busy life and balance many things is contingent on being able to move and be independent in terms of travel.

Travelling on public transport is a nightmare and I have done it for work and will never do it again if I have a choice. The unpredictablity at times, but also the inability to carry stuff, or worse still forgetting things given the pressure and hustle and bustle..Left my lap top on several occassions on the tube but thank god I caught myself before the door closed. Having a case and a lap top in another is a night mare...

3. Fuel costs and sustainability is an obvious issue.

But for me the traffic and pressure is so bad, that would be a major incentive for me moving my family to a more civiised smaller place, if that was not already our plans. Can't take it. People act like animals, especially in London and you can only see it getting worse...

I have lived in my area a very long time and can remember it before all these major dual carriage ways we now have, which are excellent pieces of engineering. Really impressive. At the right time of the day you can go from one part of London the any where in England becausee of these major connecting roads. But hear what. All these roads have done is to divert traffic and at peak times, you can't move for nothing. So by making more roads, it has created more traffic at peak times....

In my street and this is true. If you say go to the gym after work you can't find a place to park when you come back. I have to park several blocks on many occassions. People break into your vehicles as it is far from your home. Pure nightmare..Too much...

Not me bro..

@ Drunk....

Having trains is a waste of time, I have done alot of travelling on trains and my blood pressure boils, with the high prices and ever increasing prices, trains breaking down and also being crammed in these trains/tube.

They say they hit motorist because they are putting the money into transports such as Trains and buses... but even after 10 years one cannot see any improvements, if anything it has got worst. I see your preference is riding a bike and train, do you think by removing cars it will take us back 100 years. Long times travelling, massive ques waiting for trains.... blah blah.

@ FB

Do you think they should get rid of cars and what do you believe would be the impact on other transport systems?

@Mentzer, this is the problem with policy making in these societies. Purely incremental and piecemeal. So I doubt if the infrastructure to graft these things onto are simply not there. The various political and other interests have created a very fractured state of affairs.

I am not sure what the impact on public services are economically or whether it can replicate the benefits of car ownership. But as you indicated train is laughable and I had to travel by train on work business to some rural backwater place where service was minimal at best. So I am not convinced other than have a better economic impact on public services finance, through greater use, whether that in itself can outweight the benefits of the car.

I simply cannot see and am waiting for the argument that is going to satisfy all those famiies, parents and people in that routine madness which constitutes the start of the working day, that public transport can replicate and meet their pressing needs.

Still waiting..

i am at present taking driving lessons, so that i can stop taking public transport. i am fed up of getting on a bus that makes me late for work even though i have left early enough to catch two that would still allow me to reach on time. i am sick of standig sitting breathing in the same air as people who smell dont hold no freesh a morning people who are sick coughing and passing on theior germs, busses that smell of petrol constantly.

when i was at uni i took the train daily , my friend drove daily and found that she wasnt saving anything by swapping to public transport so she continued to drive to uni.

its not fun taking the bus for five minutes at a cost of £1 and then walking for 15-20 mins to reach work. its not fun slipping in the snow-turned-ice or being splashed by a passing car. its not fun at all. public transport os far too dear. plus when i do my bul shopping i have to take a taxi home and not the bus as getting twenty heavy bags of shopping on and off the bus is a pain and then having to walk

it cost me £38-42 to get to london on the train via open return ticket. when i have my car it wil ccost £20 . you do the maths

this pay as you go an road toll is silly.

@ Menzer

Trains are for silly journeys like Birmingham to London or Leeds to Glasgow...something stupid like that.

To get from Peckham toWandsworth or Hackney to Harlesden you should ride a bike. There are ssituations in life where you need the car like shopping, going out, going far etc etc but for everyday things like going to work, visiting friends and general recreation get a bike.

The tube is evil I agree.

@ Ladyday

Your maths is ok but do you pay road tax on a train? do you pay insurance on a train? congestion charge? do you need to worry where to park your train? do you have to make sure your train has MOT?

@ all

Funny tale

I was in Portsmouth raving a few years ago and I saw a guy taking a girl home from a rave on his tricknuts of his BMX... Her balancing in heels and a miniskirt holding his shoulders as he proudly rode past everyone after the rave at four in the mourning. My friends and I never laughed so hard trust.... Thats RAW!!
