The first study of the psychological effects of internet use at home for even a few hours each week, found it created a decline in psychological well being even in people without tendencies towards depression.

The study tracked 169 persons from four schools and community groups in Pittsburgh, USA, for either a one year or two year period.

Cyber relationships maintained through e-mail with no face to face contact do not provide the mutual support and warmth that contribute to a persons sense of security and happiness, the research conlcuded.

The computer firms which financed the study at a cost of US$1.5m. are said to be surprised and shocked by the findings. Are you the reader surprised and shocked?"
