Ive just been watching a report on what Hurricane Ivan has done to Greneda... very very bad. They are talking about an economic crisis with so much bananas and cocoa trees destroyed and infrastructure messed up, phonelines still down

Jamaica is next and they say Ivan is gathering strength.

Hurricane Ivan blasts Caribbean

Residents and tourists in Jamaica try to get flights off the islandJamaicans are braced for the worst as one the most powerful hurricanes in decades heads towards the island.
Hurricane Ivan is now travelling at 160mph (258km/h), making it a category five storm, the highest on the scale.
It has left scenes of devastation in the small island of Grenada where at least 12 people were killed, and other south-eastern Caribbean islands.
Commonwealth Secretary Don McKinnon has called for urgent aid from members, and expressed concern about Jamaica.
Jamaica is expected to take a direct hit on Friday, with the hurricane reaching western Cuba at the weekend.
'Pray'
Hundreds of tourists gathered at the airport of Jamaica's Montego Bay resort on Thursday trying to flee the island, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Schools were closed, and long queues formed outside shops as Jamaicans rushed to stock up. Some petrol stations ran out of fuel.

Meanwhile, Grenada is facing a massive clean-up after its pummelling by what is thought to be the worst hurricane to hit the Caribbean in a decade.
Grenada's Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, whose official residence was destroyed, told the BBC the island was "90% devastated" and that he had declared a national disaster.
The capital St George's was hit by 200km/h (125mph) winds, flattening homes and disrupting power. The storm destroyed the city's emergency operations centre, the main prison, many schools, and damaged the main hospital.

In pictures: Hurricane Ivan Mr Mitchell, who is now aboard a British naval patrol ship HMS Richmond, said the hurricane had caused "hundreds of millions of dollars of damage".
He said the country's key export crop, nutmeg, was likely to have "taken a tremendous hit".
There are conflicting reports of the total death toll from the storm, with the US state department putting the number of dead at 20.
Authorities in Grenada have confirmed 12 deaths. Elsewhere, a pregnant woman was killed in Tobago, an elderly woman died in Barbados and one person was killed on the Venezuelan coast.
Direct hit
Secretary-General McKinnon urged the worldwide membership of the Commonwealth to come to the aid of those badly hit.
He said he had been monitoring closely the devastation in Grenada, as well as in Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.
"I am also concerned about Jamaica as the hurricane heads to it," he said.

The BBC Caribbean service's reporter in St George's, Michael Bascombe, says the hurricane is the worst in living memory - worse than Hurricane Janet, which wrecked Grenada in 1955.
Several inmates escaped from the island's 17th Century prison during the storm. They are believed to include some of the politicians involved in the left-wing coup that prompted the US to invade Grenada in 1983.
Looting is reported to be widespread A United Nations disaster team is reported to be on its way to the island.
Before hitting Grenada, the hurricane brought down trees and power lines and blew off roofs in Barbados and Tobago.
Ivan is projected to hit Florida on Monday. It would be the third major storm to strike the US state this summer.

@All

It is so terrible what damage it has done, but we can't avoid the reality that mother nature has just had enough the signs are everywhere not just with hurricanes. The earth so it seems is so unbalanced thats why one part is flooding whilst another faces drought.

Don't want to bring doom and gloom to all but the fact is these islands are exactly that islands, little pieces of land that got seperated sooner most of these islands will consumed by the sea and there is no getting away from that or are they just taking back their natural state. Here within the UK parts of the country are gradually being taken back by the sea prime examples cornwall and wales just need to stop and look at the coastline and the results over a 20 year period to start with.

blkwonderMakes you stop and think if you find sand at the bottom of the sea, then surely the big sahara desert was once owned by the sea.blkidea

Nevertheless the damage still pulls hard at the heart strings and we should try and support these countries best we can when help is needed.

MAY THE MOST HIGH BE WITH ALL COUNTRIES/ISLANDS THAT THE HURRICANE IVAN ATTACKS

(CNN) -- Jamaicans are preparing for Hurricane Ivan as the powerful storm heads towards the island's southeastern coast.[/b]

With just a few hours to go before the Category 4 storm hits land, panic buying has made for some long queues in Kingston.

Officials planned to evacuate as many as 500,000 people from low-lying areas as the storm headed toward the island nation.

Ivan, with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kmph), damaged or destroyed 90 percent of the buildings when it hit Grenada on Tuesday, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA).

At least 17 people have died in Grenada as a result of the storm, according to Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson
