AFRICAN SPIRITUALISTS, SHANGOISTS, ORISHAS SUMMONED TO HELP CALM HURRICANE IVAN
After the devastation caused by a hurricane that destroyed Grenada, African Spiritualists from the Caribbean, West Africa, Jamaica, Cuba, the Gulf Coast and the Southern US combined their drumming, chanting, offerings, prayers, incense and incantations as they called on Yemanja (the Sea Goddess and Shango, (the Thunder God) to help calm Hurricane Ivan, a category five hurricane and one of the most devastating in the US and Caribbean over the past ten years.
It seems that the prayers of the spiritualists were answered because only about 40 or so people perished in the region, when thousands could have been wiped out and washed away, as occurred in Central America about ten years ago.
Those who practice African religions like Vadu, Shango, Lucumi, Orisha, Mbanda and others believe that natural forces like the hurricanes, storms, drought and earthquake are animated by spiritual forces that can be summoned and influenced to stop from doing damage.
It seems that many were right. The drumming, chanting, offering of libations and inscence, praying and faith in the Supreme Being as well as believing in influencing the elemental forceds worked.
