A real African American or wherever African magazine that doesnt copycat its white comtemporararies in form and content.

That would be a start.

they are designed for the upwardly mobile african american. the two mags have no relevance to me as a woman with caribbean parentage who lives in the uk. simply. plus its full of ads and ads and stuff that has no relavnce to me.

but i only buy if i need soemthing to read on the train and there is nothing else.

Burning Spear,

Do you believe EBONY magazines was better when John Johnson did his own books?maybe I not notunderstandng them or something, but when his daughter took over her dad's company, the book has ( to me) gonedown some in uqality and quantity.every month you see the same old redundant articles. Seemingly his daughter cannot get past Chicago, Illinois. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with wanting to to tell about your hometown (Chicago), but it seems that is ALL she is focusedand less focused about other partsof the regions of the US and other parts of the Black world. You see less articles about great Blackpeople and nothing but advertisements. I used to be a fan of EBONY. Now I find myself reading ESSESNCE or some other Black oriented magazine to find out more about what is happening in the black community. EBONY is no longer on my list. Unfortunately her dad has gotten too old and sick todo his magazines. Somebody need to tell Linda how to develop a good magazine.

I agree that EBONY'squality has down the drain. It'stoo Chicago-centered and seem to recycle the same articles (If I had a dollar for everytime I saw the headline"Are White People Taking Over R&B?" on the cover of EBONY, I'd be a millionaire already).
Quote:
ESSENCE, on the other hand, while still mainly geared toward upwardly-mobile AAs, does make an effort to report on the black female experience in other countries besides the US. Over the past year they'vedone some excellent reporting about the struggles of black women in Cuba and Brazil.

Not to mention, ESSENCE enlists the talents of many top-notch black journalists towrite their articles.

Quote:
TODAY'S BLACK WOMEN, ESSENCE'S competitor, just seems like a black version of Cosmo: all sex-tip articles and tacky fashion layouts. Unless there's an article I'm really interested in, I rarely buy TODAY'S BLACK WOMEN. Not tomentionit's a $1 more than ESSENCE and has half the content.

As for the complaints about all of the ads in the magazines: Ads are what make the mags their money. Compared to other (white)magazines like Vanity Fair, etc, I find the ads in ESSENCE quite bearable. At least you don't have to flip all the way to page 102 to get to the table of contents. The back page ads in the back of EBONY do tickle me: ads for hair extensions and my personal favorite, the ad for those $24.95 choir robes right next to the psychic hotline ad.
