Some fascinating replies here.....As a white Englishman I not only dont celebrate the Queens birthday I dont even know when it is...the real one and the Official one...cos she has two.... lucky girl.And when is the holiday?cos I have a few to catch up on... There aint one!

As I get older I find myself becoming more royalist....against all my better judgement....but they have their place funnily enough.If only to attract all them Yankee tourists that are brave enough to get on a plane and all the dollar revenue they generate.

But seriously....whatever system you set up ....on paper it is good...but the practice leaves a lot to be desired.Itsall downto the human element,cliques,favouritism,nepotism,etc.etc.

I am biased of course...but give me the English way everytime,we dont take our selves too seriously,even the mighty can be knocked,and why not?

Interesting observation, there is no British equivalent to the AA anthem and flag as far as I know, but Black Britons tend to identify with parental roots rather than a Brirish identity. Whether it be African, Carribean etc. I wouldn't say there isn't a strong concept of Black British identity which would even merit a song or flag, afterall you'd be pretty hard pressed to find somebody over the age of 25 who's parents were even born in the UK people come from other countries and the British culture is such that there is no pessure or even expectation to replace former national identities with a British one. This is different in America people are expected to become Americans wherever they have came from, it's not so here. AA roots with and in America go far deeper and for longer than those of Black Britons in the UK sometimes people tend to forget that fact.Thus, people over here are too busy displaying their Jamaican, St. Lucian, Ghanaian, Nigerian, South African flags etc rather than busying ourselves with a black British flag or anthem, there is no need to in our society, at this piont in time.

Isn't this all a bit pointless since as Africans our history and experiences within these two Colonial powers were, are completely different.

As African British we came here(most of us) as immigrants(of our own free will), relatively recently. Quite different to the African American experience.

@ Tahliba - nice to see you here! I would really like to hear your thoughts on all the attacks that have been levied over the past few days on African Americans. I ask this because although we have had differences in the past (and I daresay we will again in the future!) I do hold alot of respect for you and I would like to have a discussion with a voice of reason.

BTW, we do have a "Black National Anthem" that many of us sing regularly with a great deal of understanding. Its called "Lift Every Voice and Sing." We also have a "flag" that we regularly display.

On the 4th July every year when you lot celebrate American Independence Day with the Whites, How come we dont see you wave your own African American Flag with pride? By waving a Whiteman's flag beneath which your ancestors were raped, maimed, mutilated and lynched in their millions, dont you think you help the Whiteman in his crusade for racial superiority over Blacks? African/Black America has a rich history and had come a long way to rise above oppression and racism and therefore deserves to play a leading role in the abolition of whiteman's superiority belief over the Blackman by setting a good example (instead of trying to cause detriment via loyalty to the whiteman's cause)to other blacks wherever they reside on the Globe.

Stick to the subject at hand and stop beatingabout the bush for a change. Who said anything about Martin Luther King's Holidaybeing abad thing?. If you dont have anything sensible to say about the subject being discussed at the mo, dont bother to say anything at all.
