I do...
But it is over diagnosed... and over medicated...
sometimes symptoms of depression can be eleviated with exercise, change of diet, or counsellings... meds aren't always necessary...
big difference between being depressed and upset...
...the problem lies in knowing the difference....

Depression IS a mental condition .......full stop.
No opinions are required.
But after saying that....some people assume they are depressed when all they are is "down"....like having the "flu" ...a possible killer ...or more lkely a cold.

Coltrane,
I consider it to be a mental illness because depression does start with the mind. I believe that there a lot of people who suffer from depression but it needs to be better understood and with some mental health " experts" they need to better treat this than what some of them do. With depression or other mental illness, many psycologists/psychiastrist , especially in stae care, will group all of them the same and only focus on their patients taking their med's and that is it, instead of knowing the person and what their true inner needs are. There are many people who thinks that their mediecience will cure thier problems. What some people and some mental health experts fail to realize is that at least 90 percent of your help comes from YOU!You can take mediciene all you want , but you're not willing to put some effort in changing your life, it's null and void..it's not going to work.

Depression is an emotion, but there is also an official MEDICAL condition called depression and that's where the difference lays.
When most people hear the word "depression" they are thinking about a sad mood in reaction to a loved one dying or some type of major disappointment.
But the condition called "Clinical Depression "is much more serious because it's as a result of the chemicals in the brain being imbalanced and irregular.
This is much more serious and doesn't come from something bad happening in your life but is actually a true mental disorder that needs medication for treatment.
I hate to disappoint some of yall but in the case of Clinical Depression NO AMOUNT of positive thought or "talking too" will help because the problem is with the actual structure and chemistry of the brain and it needs either surgery or medication to correct.

you can be held against your will for depression in the new mental health bill uk
i dont see it as amental disease or something which requires medication
depression occurs through life experiences not science

Which might explain the low5-HT (serotonin) levels in the brains of those who sufferfrom the illness, right?

A identifiable chemical imbalance is a wee bit more than just mere emotion.

Also you can only be held against your will for any illness if you're a danger to yourself and other people.
Amusing how ignorant the majority of people are about a illness which is surprisingly common. Anti-depressants exist to address that chemical imbalance.

the pill nation. surely a pill does not solve problems. people should be addressing what ledt to their depressive state than turning to a happy pill. leave the prozac and vallium in usa. (no offence)

true ladyday... but clinical depression, and being hurt over a bereavement, et al are different...
It may not be as simple as the depression being a reaction to a single problem... more over it is an over reaction to a shed load of problems...

Yes because sitting there just thinking about why you have a chemical imbalance (depression, you know the clinical sort))in the brain is going to solve alot of problems isn't it.
Jesus some people are thick these days.

War keeps peopleoccupied mentally and emotionally, and most importantly it keeps people motivated.. For example motivated to stay alive. Thankfully I didn't pick that program, but people involved in wars seem to enjoy it.
