Former astronaut Fred Gregory is expected to be named as the acting administrator of NASA.
He would be the first African-American to serve at the helm of the space agency.
Gregory is a veteran of three space shuttle flights and has been deputy administrator of NASA since 2002. It is not clear if he will be the permanent successor to NASA chief Sean O`Keefe, who will relinquish the post tomorrow. Gregory will be taking over the reins of the agency as it works to return to space flight two years after the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart over east Texas during its re-entry to Earth.

dimoke:
Good question.
Why are we celebrating someone who will undoubtably uphold the USA's military dominance. Its not as if he will be discerning as to how NASA technology is used. Nah he'll just make them more efficient on spying on African and Carribean countries and maintaining their dominenece.
Its not to say that we do not need Black men in science and technology setting the trend. But why for the most powerful and imperial country on Earth.
He aint African American he's Black American. Just an American with Black skin.
A psydo European and Im not even talking about his complexion.
Nah Ill never supprt an African American who works for his governments interests in critical fields. Just another COLIN.

He has been nominated and is supposed to take over this Friday that is barring any fight from the.....House Science Committee. He's already the deputy administrator.

The issue now facing the house is whether or not it will be a permanent post...he's taken over from Sean O'Keefe's which is accused of the safety lapses in the program, and for the stalled rebuilding of the US space station. We will have to see how it plays out.

You would feel better if he packed up his gear and moved to Africa? I mean you aren't in Africa now yourself....so where is the criticism coming from?If not for his own country, then for who?

I guess we should fire all black scientists, and lawyers, and philosophers, and teachers, and police officers, and soliders, and truck drivers, and bankers,....that way we won't be doing anything for the most imperial nation on earth.

Not only do we need blacks in criticle government posts, we need MORE of them. In every aspect for the government, from the office clerk, to the director. From the guy that mops the floors, to the woman in the House or Representatives and the US Congress. From the Private to the General....from the Secruity Guard checking bades, to thePresident...woooo...beautiful though that is.

Mansa... I am going to take Parris point... when we read the Destruction of Black Civilisation (how I love that book)
I remember that how many of the other cultures came to takeover... is they took jobs and worked within the system... and before they knew it a large number of non african races had penetrated the continent...
We have to do the same and penetrate as many of their organisations on a senior level as we can... more so... there is nothing to say he won't transfer those skills at a later stage to something that will benefit our people...
After all, Africa and the Carribean are being left behind in the space race due to a lack of funding... because I know that there is a dearth of knowledged... so how can we get in the space race if we aren't willing at some point to collaborate on American and European projects?
More than this, I would rather see 10 Fred Gregory's than the normal stereotypical garbage that they pump out about black people full stop...
Thing is Mansa we can't have it both ways... we can't complain of our people being overlooked and discriminated against for these top jobs... and then complain when they get them...
I will do a little more research into Fred Gregory, however one thing I know for sure is that I will make my final judgement on him based on his actions in his posisition at NASA...
Blacknet Book Club coming soon...

The problem@ free is that whites love power to much, so infiltration is difficult. Tke rap for exampl, the only label independant of whites is bad boy. rocafella had potential, so they got gobbled up
i think the only way is to build your own institutions, and when whitey comes with his checkbook, tell him to **** off
You ever heard of the Golden Rule. He who has the gold makes the rules!
He who asks is a fool for five minutes. He who never asks remains a fool for ever.

You are right sis; HOWEVER, that is my characterization of Britain. And I've done my own research to see.

Blacks are marginalized in British culture and society.

- Partially because of the British mind set

- partially because Africans don't see themselves as British,

- partially because blacks still havethere own self defeating attitude that "(insert job).....blacks don't belong" Blacks don't belong??? That's the same racist crap white people talk.....and what's sad is, now some blacks actually believe it.

Is America perfect??.....faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar...from it, but the gains that African-Americans have made in American societyare ENORMOUS, and in the span of history, it happened OVER NIGHT.

We influence everything in this country from Government, fashion, food, finance, business, education, science...you name it, its been touched by black hands.

NOW, we should feed off of these gains made by us, from black before us........there is NO PLACE, in this country a black does not belong. There was gas station owner that came up to me and said "YOu have to turn your music down", mind you, I only have a simply factor system.

I didn't get mad, didn't get all wounded "Ohhhh you are racist" or *cry* *cry* cry* I'm black, I'm thevictim.

I reached in my pocket, showed him my military ID and said "THIS IS THE REASON I WILL PLAY WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT, AND AS LOUD AS I WANT...smiled and left.

And I go to that gas station ALL THE TIME, now....turn up my music, and pump my gas(petro). And I make sure that each time I go, its a different genre of music. Rock, Rap, R&B...LOL....he even called the Police once. And I calmly said the samething to the officer. If I'm breaking the law, PROVE IT, if not.....get out of my face.

And that is a difference (as I see it) from Africans in Britain, and African-Americans.
