@Parris i think you are missing the point. I pay income tax, council tax,National Insurance tax... every bloody monthyet i have not had any use for any one of them so far and hope not too in the future but ido it and i don't complain.
The license we are talking about is specifically for the BBC to provide advert free program that is supposed to represent everyoneresiding in the UK and paying the license fee.
That's what we're talking about, if the British governmentthink we don't matter that much that we don't need to be represented then they should not have the right to ask for a payment to make the programs that is never catered for us, and when they are they aredown right embarrassing, stereo typical stupidness... and whygo to the extreme of taking you to court and wasting their time and money so that you pay a TV license?
@Jazztalking i agree with you, thereare plenty shows aimed at younger dumb black youths, mostly to do with clothes, music or naked black females shaking their backsides on many many stations yet i can't ever remember any program that was catered forolder, middle class, educated etc Black people.

LOL, you just aren't getting it. You aren't British, you have no rights in British society.

Just because you pay taxes doesn't mean you have a say so in how the money gets spent ESPEICALLY if you are not a citizen. non-Citizens have no rights, no voice, no say so.......and in the end, blacks don't believe they are British......thus......no rights, no voice, no say say, in British society.

@Jazztalking......mhm...I agree with ya. But its like this.......if we didn't buy it, they wouldn't sell it. Simply supply and demand.

Parris its seem like u still havent grabbed the whole thing!!
in america, the white man/government will see u as an american but black or african american BUT in britain they believe they are all immigrants even though most of them are born here and lived here all their life....theres no point just claiming or openly sayin ur black bristish
one of my friend that goes around sayin he's british born n bred was asked by one of his lecture mate- "are u an illegal immigrant as in you came from another country when you were young"
the first thing ur employer ask you is -what country are u from?
p.s i think black people should start complaining more especially when it comes to the media
A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory.

Parris - i think you need to live in britain to actually understand what it is to be black in this country.
Whatever you call yourself over here, people will always say, but where are you from originally.Untillwe have been here for hundreds of years, we will never be seen as british, but children of immigrants. Most of us couldn't give a damn, cos who wants to belong toa small cold stiff upperlip island anyway! LOL!
But that aint got jack to do with it, black people are born and bred HERE. those that migrate contribute to society, therefore, we have a right to be represented properly. How many asian people would say they are british, but yet they have an entire network dedicated to them.
Don't blame us for the lack of representation. British society is MESSED UP.
Also i agree with DM, 1xtra is a youth music station, and it actually reflects quite well YOUTH music culture.

Hey I can dig it...never let it be said that I'm believe American to be the utopia for Blacks world wide...nice thought, but yeah right. And I am truly am ignorant with regard to the understanding of race relations in Britain. As I said before I'm looking from the outside in.
HOWEVER, I think it is more important how Black British view themselves rather than how others view them. What a BRILLIANT concept to get a race of people, who were born in a country, part of that country and are a part of that countries success (and failures) to believe that are not apart of that country. Genius, and it happens here in America as well. My Great Grandmother (born in 1912 and still living) calls them “New Negroe. LOL…..so if you ever hear me use that term, I got it from here. She says that “New Negroe who never went through the things her generation went through have this view that somehow the fight my grand mother fought was wrong, and that somehow they know better. But I’m getting off track…that is for a later time.
Listen, how Whites or Asians see themselves should be of little concern when it comes to how blacks see themselves. The reason, from my rudimentary research, Asian have a station is for two reasons, 1) Simple, there are lot more of them…….numbers…..and with those numbers comes money. 2) They have closer and tighter communities than us…which will trump income. Asians make up rought 6% of America….yet, they MANY more Stations that Blacks in this country. More than 36 million blacks in American and I can only think of TWO channels. (BET and more recently TV1)….why…certainly not numbers…….lack of community, pooling of resources, an hmmm…..MONEY.
All of this is in keeping with the two reasons I said there was no dedicated positive station to blacks in Britain.
But again, what does it, or should it matter how people see you. People say "Hey you aren't British"....and yall say "Yeah you are right". I mean if they looked at you and said “You are niqqer would you believe them? But its not just in the UK…it happens here as well, usually with older Americans. Ignorance, and most blacks in America rather than taking the time to educate one, they usually say “Oh **** him and be about their business. Me, I am going to try to exchange ignorance for understanding and knowledge.
Interesting story. I was escorting some WWII Veterans during the dedication ceremony and one looks at me and say "where are you from"...."I'm from Kentucky, but I grew up in California".....he says "No I'm mean where are your people from". "Well my dad is from the south, and my mother grew up in Kentucky"......"no" he says "I mean where are you ancestos from"....he said “I mean Africa…..LOL….a friend of mine, (also a solider who’s parents are from India), looked at me as if I was going to crush the old guy. You know I broke it down to him, gave him a brief history of Black-Americans in America…even told him some things he didn’t know about his OWN generation with regards to blacks….to make a long story short……in the end he said “you know I never knew that………..exchanging knowledge for ignorance.
My view, right or wrong, is that Blacks in Britian will continued to be ignored until they take ownership of a country that is THERES. Blacks after the end of slaver knew this, blacks during construction (both periods) knew this, blacks during Jim Crow and the civil rights new this……Learn from us sis, something with a little more substance than rap music and black athletes. Pfft, I’m still learn about us myself, and I’ve been FORMALLY studying Black-American history for the past three years..
I say black, because we only started being African-American about 40 years ago. It’s a pretty new concept.

Parriss - no time at the moment to respond to you fully.
But i will say this. How people see us is just a part of the story. How we see ourselves is what counts. It may be a bit of a contradiction, but many of us are not proud of britain, for so many reasons - namely history, racism etc. So we will hold on to our parents homeland, because we can. We can trace our culture, our names our heritage. And many of us are a lot prouder of being Nigerian, Jamaican etc than being british. Who the hell wants to be british. But we are here, and we do pay our license fee, as do asians. So therefore if we contribute then we should be served properly.
some of us don't want ownership of this country, no way. But we do want to be recognised as being contributors. contradiction?yep, but thats how it is.
But you cannot compare america to britian. We always say this, time and time again. Your history is different. I'm sure it didn't take black americans 50 years to be at the stage you are now. It was a steady but slow struggle. When black people in this country cannot trace back their roots, then maybe people will feel more british. But that is besides the point. THAT WILL NEVER BE THE REALITY of my children though. I would hate to have them think this foolish island is their heritage. Let them bask in glory of african not british history. let them feel like they are a part of things, not outsiders that are just guests.
Asian's are not that much more than black people in this country. Black people need their own media anyway, waiting for the white media won't work.

Dont mean to labour this point Parris but it is important in the content of things i feel.
Lets hope and pray it what we want, because if we buy its just because its beings old, it makes us look weak and pathetic, mindless drones.
PaRrIs
Cant agree with you on that point. You cant attack the problem at the consumers. We have a natural lust to consume what is being sold to us. That beingwhether you're white or black. If i package up a lump of dog shite with bows and ribbons on then im sure i'll find a buyer somewhere. Its the marketeer who holds the responsibilty of the tone of the message, hence its them we should complain to when they get it wrong.
In the case of BET maybe the problemstarts long before its black executives pass the buck.Maybe itstartswhere the shit's being producedof which then they are buying into.............. This definately makes us look like mindless drones.
Of course you're right it is about money money money, but that doesnt mean it should be at our expense or that the deffermation of our characters wontbe thrown in there somewhereby a bad mind................so we need to take a stance.
Since you aren't British you don't have the "right" to demand anything.....nada....nothing....zilnch...and this is why I say having you guys not say you are British plays into the hands of the British Government....its beautiful really. .................................................. ...............ra ra
PaRrIs
You made a good point here one which i agree with the principles attached to your message.
In my eyes the term 'beingBritish' personally isone which turns me off. I would like to be labelled something else with the exactly the same rights and one where everyone understood i had the same rights. I dont mind the term Black British or Afro Carribean origin as there is no mistaking who i am or what im entitled to.
If certain Black people say we are not British it doesnt mean they are forfeiting all their rights or contributions, it meansthey like the white British -who love to provide labels for them, acknowledge mutally whothey are. Its merely a label not a compulsion to exclude us from our rights, which im sure the British government could never sell to anyone anyway.
