On my way into the office today, I saw ablack girl walking with her littleboy on the tube. The mother's head had massive messy weave that appeared to be collected from prison fullof a political prisoners. It was a combination of red, blue and brown...
The poorkid, no older than three years old, was wearing one of those stupid stocking-foot/Lawrence of Arabia combos in bright orange on his head. He also hadone massive cubic zirconia in each ear, combined with baggy jeans. He looked like a mini thug you'd see on MTV Base (you know my opinion on this station).
What kind of example is this woman setting and what start to life in 21st Century Britain is she giving to this boy? (a poor one I'd say)
We've all discussed the problems that young Black males have can have in being marginalised later in life at school. This boy's mother sees nothing wrong in stereotyping her youth before his life has really started...
What are you thoughts on this?
Even if you're not paranoid, that doesn't mean that someone isn't out to get you...

You know what? Not my child!
However, seriously, how old was the mother? I ask because, following on from another thread, I'm willing to bet she wasn't much more than 20 years old. Obviously she's a product of her own upbringing. My parents never bought me up to "follow fashion", therefore, whilst I dress my kids nicely I refuse to spend lots on money on clothes and shoes that they'll grow out of tomorrow (or maybe it's because I'm a tightwad?!).
Also, please explain "The poorkid, no older than three years old, was wearing one of those stupid stocking-foot/Lawrence of Arabia combos in bright orange on his head." Whatis that? My old age is showing through.

She looked as though she was around 28 years, so she wasn't just an impressionable youth who sees MTV Base's cultural pollution as fact. She was old enough to know better and spoke with a London accent.
As for the toddler's headgear, it was one of those stocking-foot things with an extra flap that covers the neckback... (more rubbish worn by US Entertainers that Black British see as style).
I guess people like that headgear as itprotects them from the harsh perpertual and intense sunshine we always have in London....

Just to clarify - its called a doo-rag and is used by most black men who have long hair to keep it tidy or to hide it when its messy. They were in use waaaaaay before US rappers decided to use them as a fashion accessory - so before u chat about them being rubbish PLEEZ edu-ma-cate urself!

Having said that - I do feel sorry for the child being steryotyped by his own mother - not really the best way to install a sense of cultural pride in the child. Poor thing

For Africa to me... is more than a glamorous fact. It is a historical truth. No man can know where he is going unless he knows exactly where he has been and exactly how he arrived at his present place.

Not saying that stereotyping her child in this way of dressing is going to be positive for him now, or in the future. But what’s more important than the way this child and his mother dresses, is what she is instilling on the inside - the education, the safe loving home etc. Now, if that’s all in check, than the way the child dresses shouldn’t be of much concern, expect for those who stereotype people on the basis of way they look!

At least we agree on this - saddling your kid with unecessary stereotypical baggage at such a young age in irresponsible. As much as I can't stand it, at least wait a few years until the kid can make the choice to live the stereotype.

It shouldn't but unfortuantely it probably is. It's a complete package. What values is a mother instilling into a toddler when she's making him into a Mini-thug clone with mock large diamond earrings, designer clothes?

I hear yoiu regarding the other values she may be instillingat home in private, but from where I was standing, all I couldsee are those of superficalness andmaterialsim. If that's how she projects her child to the outside world, goodness knows what values she is giving him in private....

What's "English" attire in your book? I'm not talking about putting a toddler in a tweed jacket, barbour jacket and plus fours; I just think that dressing a three year old in a doo rag, designer clothesand chunky diamond(ique) earings is inapproprite. You think it's OK?

I don't think it would be a huge leap in reasoning to guess that:
