SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 17 year-old high school student faked the theft of his 2002 BMW M3 in order to collect insurance money to upgrade to a Bentley, police said on Thursday.
The teen, a student of Skyline High School in Sammamish, a suburb of Seattle, had reported the car stolen earlier this week, said Michael Chiu, a spokesman for the police in Bellevue, another suburb located between Seattle and Sammamish.
Police in another town found the $47,000 BMW being stripped and arrested four suspects, who connected the teen to the theft, leading to his arrest.
"That investigation led us to believe that he wanted to upgrade to a Bentley," Chiu said.
Bentleys, featured frequently in U.S. hip-hop videos, have a suggested retail price of $160,000 for the Continental GT coupe and $240,000 for the Arnage sedan.
The BMW was in the name of the teen's mother name but was used as his vehicle, Chiu said. The student was released to his mother, and prosecutors are considering charges.

Why would any parent even with a marginal brain give a child a $47,000 car? I don't care how much money you have that is ridiculous as the child's behavior amply demonstrates.

Its simple really the type of parents that give their child a $47K car is the type of parents who don't want to be parents and worst still don't know how to be parents. These typethink that loading a child with expensive gifts will distract the child from catching on that their parents have zero parenting skills and have more money than sense.

There are said to be schools in affluent districts where the lots are full of European and Japanese luxury cars, and kids are too embarrassed to arrive with something less.
OC?

@Coltrane
Parents really can't complain when they create monsters...can they? God forbid should any of these children lose the family money and find themselves kissing the hands of poverty.

Status is important in kiddie culture, and has an impact on happiness. That sounds like a defense of the parents, but it's not meant as one. I remember being told by an older girl when I was about 16 that a car was a "necessity" in a prospective boyfriend - no car, no shag. That's a pretty powerful motivator at that age.
It probably says a lot about my attitudes that I decided on this basis to do without both a car and, for an absurdly long time, a girlfriend as well: "**** 'em" is a phrase that springs to mind.

clp) Welcome backColtrane...we missed you....
Anyway, my daughter says she want a Mini Cooper .
Nowadays peer pressure isn't just about the best trainers. Kids must live in the best house, in the best neighbourhood, have parents that have good professions so that they can give them cars etc.
I read somewhere that Arnold Shwartznegger sets fire to his kids clothes if they drop them on the floor. However, he is the exception to the rule. Most rich kids are spoilt brats.
Besides, the kid in your story is 17. Trust me, at that age they're not kids anymore. I think they're equivalent to age 25 in my day. They grow up so fast...

People who have no time to parent their kids, or perhaps no inclination to do so. So probably, 'guilt ridden parents' is the answer. You may also be looking at one of the principal reasons why western industrial nations are producing generations of braindead tossers

blkclapblkclapblkclapblkclapblkclapblkclapspot on you can actually look in the eyes of the youths today the majority of them and see that there is no life in their eyes reflecting no action in their brain ...."braindead tossers" your too kind with your words but spot on nevertheless.
