:PWhy is that still in africa, you have european langauges still spoken in most countries? I think it' is quite disgraceful to still have european influences in africa still. especially speaking the language of the same folks who f**ked africa up.

i have a offtopic.gif, what's the origin in the name "Africa"?

well according to babynamesword.com it means pleasing pleasant and is celtic in origin

http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of_Africa.html

also from sacklunch.net through a jeeves search it says that africa has pheonecian origins

Meaning of Place Name: Africa
Africa: Origin traced to the Phenician "afer" (plural "afri"), "a black man," whence Latin, Africa, and Greek, Aphrike. http://www.sacklunch.net/placenames/A/Africa.html

That's like asking why is Spanish spoken in Central and Latin American instead of the native language of the Aztecs or Mayans? or why English is spoken in America instead of the language of the Cheerokees, Blackfoot, ect. Over time language becomes lost and the dominate group forces the others to learn their language in other to communicate.
Quote:
European countries conquered the tribes/countries in Africa. Many countries in Africa were once owned and ruled by European countries therefore their language stayed. Many people in Africa not only speak their native language from their tribe but also French or English (which ever colony owned that area).
Quote:
Also, I have severalfriends born in various countries in Africa and I was informed within a 10 km radius you can have 50 several different tribes with their own customs, traditions, and culture. Each mayspeak a different language thus producing 50 different language and not be able to communicate with each other. Therefore, English or French is a common language taught in school in which they learn to communicate.

Hope that helps..
