Hi all.

Althought this is my first post here i was wondering whether anyone managed to watch this program last night. It was on BBC3 at 11pm last night. It was a self funded program made to look into the so called black on black violence that has been happening. I wacthed with great interest for 55mins.

We heard from people who have survived/ witnessed shootings, Mothers/family members who have lost family members to gun crime. Also heard from Young males and females, drug dealers, drug takers and also from a member of staff from Goldsmiths College (or uni cant remember which).

Firstly - There was no advertisments or any media stories about this programme.I only found out about it after i recieved the email from friends. confused3

Secondly - The fact that Trident declined to give any comment at all towards the programme... Why?

Thirdly - The station and the time it was put on. Why put it on BBC3. U need Cable or sky digital to have access to that station. I feel it would have been better served if it had been on on at an earlier time on either BBC1 or BB2

Please sure your thoughts if you managed to watch this program or have any other comments to add as i would be inetersted to read them.

I read about this particular programme in the New Nation last Monday but that was the only place that I saw or heard anything about it.

Operation Trident were quoted as saying that 'it is the most important programme ever made ongun culture amongst young black males' or something along those lines.

I was told last night by a blacktv producer (yes, a couple of them do exist!) that this programme will be on BBC2 within the next 8-9 weeks. Heres hoping!

Please share your thoughts if you managed to watch this program or have any other comments to add as i would be inetersted to read them.

This programme will have made uncomfortable viewing for many as it introduced the viewer to a world where life meant very little, where the love of money meant a great deal and where social conscience met with indifference. For all those who are unashamed advocates of capitalism, how does it square with you to hear a 20 year saying that he makes '£8000 a week' and anybody who trys to stop that will get 'blazed?' What concerned me was the guns and the bullets that were shown and there was a youth who looked at a bullet and said that 'if this licks you' you must 'dead'. The most terrible thing for me was the roll call of all those Black human beings who died at the hands of gun violence which was listed at the end of the programme. I have personally gone to the funerals of eight people who have been shot & killed. I wish those watching this film could open themselves up and witness the utter devastaion of those Fathers, Mothers, Children and extended family membersand vow to resolve differences in a different way.

Thanks for the views as I was beginning to think i was the only one who watched it.

Calculata2 I would be interested to know where operation trident made that statment because towards the end of the program i am sure it said Trident declined to make a comment.I hope your friend is right and that it will get shown on BBC2 as more people will be able to watch it. Do you know whether it will be shown at an earlier time

Blaqwoman - I know the funeral scenes where very upsetting but may be some of the youths out there need to see the devestation they cause, they need to see the sadness and the pain they cause others.

Watching the program brought up some intersting points. How do you reach out to someone earning over 8 grand a week tax free and ready to kill anyone who gets in their way??? how could you convince someone to give up that lifestle of making easy money

but it seemed the fundamental thing was the social exclusion staruing from school. why are so many simply kicked out and left to roam the streets. their parenst still have to work and cant bring them to work. or worst for me was that guy who had a glowing cv of top grades and stil struggling to get a job

At school age young black men are always targeted. There are twice as likely to be expelled and teachers will not want to push them when it comes to studying. Yet they are willing to push you when it comes to doing well for Sports events for the school like football, basketball and athletics. i have witnessed that myself when i was at school and have seen the same thing happen to my nephews.
Quote:
The thing is also (this my personal view) some youngsters are being conditioned to believe that there is no place for them in society and that there is nothing out there for them. When they face racisim at school, always being targeted by police etc then it can lead to a build up where they just dont give a damn any more and gonno do what they want when they want which majority of the time will lead to them to earning money through illegal activities.

I think we need to start by taking more of interest of what happens at school with our children especially the males. Encourage them to study and also show them with hard work and determination you can get somewhere. Also look at what the school is teaching and if necessary find out more info especially when it comes to Exam period when it comes to taking GCSE'S. A lot of the teachers wont tell you this but you can actually buy previous exams yourself for you children to practice on.
Quote:
Finally to the youngsters out there especially those who have studied and are looking for jobs but cannot find any. Alli can say is keep your heads up and keep on trying. Do not give up, do not think of yourselves as failures. When i was young and first looking for work i remember one of my brothers older friend said to me when ever you go for the job interview, your aim is to go in there and show them that you are confident and can do the job.Healso helped me with how to speak and answer questions. Maybe some of the youngsters would benefit from that. I know from experience walking into a place where you are having an interview and you hardly see any black faces can be intermidating and aslo downheartning but if you let that get to you then it can reflect in the interview. Positive thinking....its easier said then done but perhaps we could all make a difference by offering advice to the youngsters, setting up some sort of mentoring scheme etc or websites giving advice on gaining work and interview techniques.
Quote:
Finally i would like to add that it may seem like it is very simple steps but we have to start somewhere. Taking these small steps with our youth can maybe play a small part in changing their outlooks in life and make a difference.
